The Los Angeles Angels (25-31) and San Diego Padres (34-21) close out a two game set with a 4:10 p.m. ET contest at Petco Park Wednesday. We analyze the Angels-Padres betting odds and lines, with MLB picks and best bets.

Angels at Padres: Projected starting pitchers

RHP Jaime Barria vs. RHP Mike Clevinger

Barria has logged a solid 3.26 ERA in four starts and a pair of relief appearances.

  • Owns a 4.42 career ERA through 51 games (43 starts).

Clevinger owns a 3.10 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP through 7 starts split between the Padres and Cleveland Indians. He missed his last start due to biceps tightness and hasn’t pitched since Sept. 13.

  • Most recent start was his best of the season: 7 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 SO vs. San Francisco Giants.

Money line (ML)

The Angels (+160) have been on a play order for me for the last week or so. The Seraphs have gone 6-3 over their last nine games. Profits have rolled in on a better angle by skipping a couple of iffy starter situations, and that fits into this matchup Wednesday.

AVOID the Angels (+160) play, but consider a line-watch in a holdout for a +170 tag.

New to sports betting? A winning $10 bet on the Angels (+160) would return a profit of $16.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The lean is on Los Angeles, but the +1.5 cushion does not jibe with the highest-leverage play of this contest, and that’s the Over. STEER CLEAR of the Angels +1.5 (-134).

Over/Under (O/U)

The starters have some significant risk of logging some higher-than-ERA numbers here. San Diego has a top-5 offense at home (.855 OPS), and Los Angeles has a top-5 offense going in September (.820).

Both clubs are at much their best against right-handed pitching. Back the OVER 8.5 (-110).

Los Angeles Angels at San Diego Padres odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Tuesday’s Los Angeles Angels at San Diego Padres sports betting odds and lines, with MLB betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Los Angeles Angels (24-31), winners of four of their last five games, will hit the road for a two-game series against the San Diego Padres (34-20). First pitch of the opener is set for 9:10 p.m. ET Tuesday evening at Petco Park. We analyze the Angels-Padres betting odds and lines, with MLB picks and best bets.

Angels at Padres: Projected starting pitchers

RHP Griffin Canning vs. RHP Zach Davies

Canning matched a season high with 7 strikeouts in his last outing. He’ll carry a 4.29 ERA and 8.2 K/9 through 10 starts into Tuesday night’s outing.

  • He has made 11 career starts on the road, where he has recorded a 5.13 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 54 1/3 innings (9.8 K/9). By comparison, he owns a 4.07 ERA and 8.7 K/9 in 17 appearances (16 starts) at home.
  • Though the overall results are pretty underwhelming, Canning has been pitching better lately. In his last four starts, he has a 3.57 ERA along with a 23:6 K:BB in 22 2/3 innings.

Davies has been a pleasant surprise for the Padres, posting a 2.69 ERA and 8.2 K/9, easily a career-best, through his first 10 starts.

  • In four starts at home, Davies has a 2.81 ERA and 26 punchouts in 25 2/3 innings (9.1 K/9).
  • Davies doesn’t throw hard and has always thrown his sinker more than half the time, so he’s never been a big strikeout pitcher. He is throwing his changeup more than his sinker in 2020 and has a 21% swinging strike rate on the pitch, leading to more strikeouts.

Prediction

Padres 6, Angels 4

Money line (ML)

  • Angels (+145)
  • Padres (-162)

The Angels come into this one with a record of 8-16 on the road. They’ll be facing a San Diego team that is 21-9 at home for highest home winning percentage in the National League, and fifth-best in all of baseball.

Though Canning has been better lately and Davies isn’t quite as good as his ERA would suggest, the odds aren’t high enough to side with the road dogs. Take the PADRES (-162) to win this one.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Angels (+145) to win would return a profit of $14.50 The same bet on the Padres nets a profit of just $6.17.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

  • Angels +1.5 (-150)
  • Padres -1.5 (+125)

Davies has yet to allow more than three earned runs in a game this season. The Padres have also been extremely tough to beat at home, while the Angels have been one of the league’s worst road teams. There is enough value in this line to bet on the PADRES -1.5 (+125) to win by multiple runs.

Over/Under (O/U)

  • Over 9 (-110)
  • Under 9 (-110)

Neither starting pitcher is likely to get completely blown up, but neither should be expected to completely shut down the opposition, either. Look for this one to end up very close to the total, and it could easily go either way. Therefore, this looks like a line to AVOID.
