GIMME the MARINERS (-105) for 1.25 units because Flexen has been one of the more profitable starting pitchers to bet on this season. Seattle is 11-4 in games he starts and Flexen has been lights out at home.

Furthermore, the Mariners are 28-19 at home, 17-12 against left-handed starters and 19-8 in one-run games.

Finally, this is one of the few instances in MLB regular-season betting where I’m looking to “fade the market” because I have a hunch Angels DH Shohei Ohtani‘s superstardom gets the public to bet on the Angels.

According to Pregame.com, more than 50% of the cash wagered has been on L.A. but oddsmakers haven’t moved the opening line much.

It would appear as if the House is OK booking Angels bets and will be rooting for the Mariners Saturday. Let’s roll with the House and BET the MARINERS (-105) for 1 unit.

PASS because Seattle’s listed run line is a little too rich for my blood and the Mariners -1.5 (+190) on the alternate run line is a no-go since Seattle is 5-12 ATS as a home favorite this season with a minus-1.9 run line margin.

Over/Under (O/U)

“LEAN” to the UNDER 8.5 (-115) for one-third of a unit because the presumed “sharp” money is on the Under despite a majority of the situational trends pointing to a higher scoring affair and these teams having a combined 15-8 O/U record when these starters take the mound.

Not only is it typically wiser to follow the money in sports betting, especially when it’s opposite of where the public is betting, but Seattle’s ballpark is a notoriously pitcher-friendly venue.

Listen, I’m all for fading Seattle when Gonzales is on the mound when the situation warrants it, but this ain’t the spot.

Gonzales has beaten the Angels in four straight starts (three of them were deemed “quality starts”) plus L.A.’s lineup should be easier to work through since both Mike Trout and 3B Anthony Rendon are on the IL.

Also, Cobb pitches a lot better at home than on the road this season. Cobb is 2-2 on the road with a 7.77 ERA (2.48 home ERA), 1.64 WHIP (0.94 home WHIP), and 21 of his 31 home runs allowed have been in away games.

Furthermore, we are seeing some “reverse line movement” in the betting market as nearly three-fourths of the money wagered is on L.A.’s money line (according to Pregame.com), but the House is making the Angels cheaper.

This game opened with L.A. laying -130 and has been steamed down despite the overwhelming support within the betting market, and it’s a red flag in sports betting when oddsmakers make the more popular side cheaper.

Lastly, Cobb needs to give the Angels a quality start because Seattle’s bullpen is far better than L.A.’s.

For example, the Mariners relievers are second in both WAR and xFIP while the Angels’ bullpen is 20th in WAR and 23rd in xFIP.

PASS because Seattle’s full game and First 5 Innings run lines are a little too rich for my blood even though the Mariners are 20-9 ATS this season at home, and the Angels are just 5-9 ATS as a road favorite.

Over/Under (O/U)

“LEAN” to the UNDER 8.5 (-105) for a half-unit since we are seeing a similar “reverse line movement” towards the Under, Seattle’s ballpark is notoriously pitcher-friendly, and the Mariners are 19-25-2 O/U at home this season.

That being said, Seattle’s money line is by far my favorite play in the Angels-Mariners game.

“LEAN” to the ANGELS (-155) for a three-fourths unit because of the vig and I’d like to parse my L.A. bet between its money line and run line.

That being said, the Angels have two bona-fide MVP candidates raking in CF Mike Trout and DH/RHP Shohei Ohtani, and the 2019 NL MVP in 3B Anthony Rendon, whose Statcast metrics suggest he’s due for a breakout.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

Bundy is L.A.’s ace and despite his ho-hum ERA, he does have a lower FIP and his exit velocity and hard-hit rate are far better than the MLB average.

Furthermore, Statcast grades Bundy out in the 94th percentile of chase%, 92nd percentile of fastball spin rate—which is huge because the four-seam fastball is Bundy’s most used—and the 76th percentile of expected wOBA.

Also, L.A. lineup’s advanced hitting metrics against left-handed pitching is rather mediocre so far this season, but the Angels have drilled Sheffield in both of his starts against them in 2020.

BET ANGELS -1.5 (+105) for a half unit.

Over/Under (O/U)

PASS on the total since I like the Angels lineup vs. Sheffield, but these teams are a combined 2-7 O/U with these two starters on the mound and we are betting L.A.’s run line in part because of the expectation Bundy pitches a quality start.
