Please don’t blame the Angels for the tragic ending to Shohei Ohtani’s season

Shohei Ohtani’s injury is the worst thing that’s happened to baseball in a while.

This is the online version of our daily newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning. Here’s Mike Sykes.

Just when you think things can’t get worse for the Los Angeles Angels, they absolutely do. Just like always.

The organization took a big bet on itself when it opted not to trade Shohei Ohtani at this month’s trade deadline despite his impending free agency. Ohtani made it clear he wants to play for a contender. The Angels clearly aren’t that. The team’s best option was to trade him and launch a rebuild. Los Angeles did the opposite.

Now, we’re here. Shohei Ohtani won’t pitch again this season after reportedly tearing his UCL in his right elbow, per Jeff Fletcher of the OC Register.

It’s unclear if Ohtani will need surgery again. This is the same arm he had Tommy John surgery on back in 2018. If he does opt for surgery, he won’t pitch for the entirety of the 2024 MLB season. As for the immediate future, it’s also unclear if he’ll hit again at all this season.

RELATED: Before his injury, Ohtani was making a run for the Cy Young.

There’s no way around it. This Ohtani saga has ended in complete disaster. The Angels keeping him around didn’t work out for anybody. Not only did the team not capitalize on having a generational talent on its roster by missing out on the postseason, but now Ohtani may also miss out on hundreds of millions of dollars because of this. It’s also unclear how much he’ll pitch for the rest of his career considering the wear and tear on his arm.  This is not what anyone wanted to see here.

It’s so easy to blame the Angels for this, but y’all — I’m sorry. I just can’t fault the Angels for going for it here with the best player in baseball.

Come on, man. Who wants to be known as the franchise that traded away the best player in the sport? He’s the MVP, y’all.  That’s like if the Cavaliers traded LeBron James back in 2009. You just don’t do that, man.

It’s one thing to be snake-bitten as the Angels are, but it’s another thing to never aspire for more. The Angels tried. The team wanted to compete. It wanted to give its fans something — someone — to be proud of. That’s not a bad thing. That’s good for baseball.

Look, I don’t have any answers here as to what should’ve happened or what should be done now. I’m just heartbroken all around for everyone.

I’m sick for Shohei because of the impact this may have on his career. I’m sick for the Angels because they went for it and they failed. I’m sick for the entire sport that might lose out on one of the best and most entertaining talents we’ve ever seen.

This just sucks all around. Please, get well soon, Shohei. Baseball will miss you dearly.

Quick hits: The 49ers never gave Lance a chance … James Harden’s beef with Daryl Morey is a complicated onion … and more

Mandatory Credit: Maria Lysaker-USA TODAY Sports

— Here’s Robert Zeglinski’s brilliant column on the 49ers never truly giving Trey Lance a chance. After just four starts and 102 career passing attempts, the team is done with him. What a shame.

— Prince Grimes has a Layup Lines theory about what the true intentions of James Harden’s comments about Daryl Morey were. He wanted him fired. I think I agree. Hit that subscribe button for me when you’re done reading.

Nike has gamified Kobe Bryant’s legacy and nothing about that feels good or right.

Chargers donating minimum of $50,000 to Maui wildfire relief efforts

The Chargers are part of the effort to bring help to the island after devastating wildfires.

The Chargers are lending their support to help the survivors of the devastating wildfires on Maui. They are donating at least $50,000 to aid the relief efforts.

The Bolts, along with the other Los Angeles professional sports teams have committed to donating a combined $450,000 to the American Red Cross.

“The images and video coming out of Maui over the past week are heartbreaking,” Chargers owner Dean Spanos said. “The destruction is beyond comprehension, and the loss of life is nothing short of tragic.

“This hits especially close to home when I think of the vibrant Hawaiian community here in Southern California and players past and present like [former linebacker] Manti Te’o and [safety] Alohi Gilman.”

Over 100 people were killed when wildfires swept through parts of the Hawaiian island.

“In the wake of recent events in Maui, the images, videos and stories of the past few days have struck a deeply personal chord with me,” Gilman said.

“Maui isn’t just a place on the map; it’s a part of my homeland, my connection to Hawaii. My heart resonates with the resilience of the people who lost their homes while also stepping up for their neighbors in need.”

The Chargers will donate their portion of their 50/50 raffle proceeds that they make during their preseason game against the Saints on Sunday.

Fans can start buying tickets when the gates open on Sunday until the end of the third quarter. They can be purchased on the concourse and at raffle kiosks throughout SoFi Stadium. The winning ticket number will be posted in-game on the video board during the fourth quarter.

Those who cannot attend the game can still donate to the American Red Cross to lend support.

“It’s been extremely heartening to see people from all walks of life rally around my people and return that love and support,” Te’o said.

“In life there are things that we simply cannot control, but what we can control is how we respond. This weekend is an opportunity for our Chargers ‘ohana to respond; to come together and assist Maui in its time of need.”

Seby Zavala defied physics at Angel Stadium with a home run that shouldn’t be possible

Weird things happen when Seby Zavala is hitting home runs

Seby Zavala is not really what you’d call a power hitter.

The backup catcher for the Chicago White Sox only has 13 home runs in 151 career games, but he does have a penchant for weird things happening when the ball does go far off his bat.

For instance, he became the first player in MLB history to hit his first three home runs in the same game. Zavala has delivered two more multi-home run games since then — and when he is seeing the ball he tends to drive in multiple runs per game — yet what he did on Wednesday night in Anaheim is enough to break your brain in ways only baseball can.

On the second of Zavala’s two home runs (of course he hit two) in Chicago’s 11-5 victory against the Angels, the 29-year-old pulled a ball down the left field line that looked like it was way foul up until the moment in landed in the seats in fair territory. No one in either dugout seemed to understand how it happened.

Zavala even stood in the batters box for about three seconds after making contact thinking he’d have to get ready for the next pitch before he started jogging down the first base line.

The Angels immediately challenged the call, because how could you not? It was quickly upheld, but you need to see the ball’s flight path in order to understand why.

Unfortunately, the graphic will only leave you with more questions.

I have never seen a home run with a flight pattern that looks like an “S”. I’m not sure I will again. In fact, I’m not even sure how this is possible. My best guess here is that a gust of wind caught the ball at just the right moment and pushed it back into fair territory. Beyond that, I’m at a loss.

This home run will haunt me. Just not as much as it’s going to haunt Angels pitcher Andrew Wantz for giving it up.

Shohei Ohtani hilariously pick-pocketed an umpire for a weird — but kind! — reason

Shohei Ohtani is the best of us.

Shohei Ohtani is the absolute best of us. I mean that in every possible way.

The dude made history on Wednesday by being the first player in MLB history to violate the pitch clock as both a pitcher and a hitter on the same night, which is already hilarious and weird.

But, on that same night, he also pick-pocketed an umpire for a baseball. Yes, you read that correctly. Shohei Ohtani pick-pocketed an umpire in the middle of a game.

While the umpire spoke with Ohtani’s manager and his translator, the MLB phenom snagged a baseball from out of his pocket. Why? The reason is weird, but also very kind.

It was because the opposing pitcher needed a ball to warm up with.

This guy, man. Ohtani seems like such a joy to be around.

This is not the sort of gamesmanship we’re used to seeing around sports. Most people would normally want their opponents as frazzled as possible to ensure their best chances at a win.

Not Ohtani, though. Nope. Take this baseball and go warm up so we can get this game over with. That’s his vibe. And it’s a pretty cool one.

We need more folks in sports like this.

Shohei Ohtani was so adorably excited to see Ichiro before a Mariners-Angels game

This is so pure

There are few things in baseball more beautiful than the friendship between Shohei Ohtani and Ichiro Suzuki.

Ohtani has long talked about his love for the retired Mariners legend and has been starstruck by him on several occasions. And it still never gets old. The two Japanese baseball icons had a chance to meet again on Monday night with the Angels playing in Seattle.

As soon as Ohtani spotted his hero across the stadium he took off running to pay his respects.

It’s the way Ohtani just immediately drops everything and turns back into a kid that makes this moment so wholesome.

Honestly, it deserves a closer look.

Basically anytime these two share the field together the public gets another adorable moment.

Baseball is the best.

A hapless Angels fan perfectly summed up an awful 9th-inning defensive blunder in loss to Mariners

Angels fans can have nice things, they just can’t keep them.

Angels fans have a special place in baseball lore.

They’re blessed enough to get to see generational talents like Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani on a daily basis, but cursed to watch them miss the playoffs again and again.

Angels fans are Henry Bemis in The Twilight Zone having time enough at last to enjoy all the books they ever want in solitude only to break their reading glasses.

It’s not fair. Monday night was just the latest example.

Ohtani pitched six innings with two earned runs on eight strikeouts—even debuting a new two-seam fastball!— against the Mariners only to watch it all unravel in the 9th inning on a head-scratching defensive error.

Angels fans couldn’t believe it.

I’d call this child-like defense, but having watched the Little League World Series this month, that wouldn’t be fair or accurate. There’s no reason to throw to third when catcher Max Stassi can just run and tag him. Loup doesn’t run to cover home plate, which makes the rundown look even sillier. And allowing the hitter to reach third is just insult to injury.

Fans, rightfully, couldn’t believe it.

The Angels would continue to implode in the 9th en route to a 6-2 loss as the Mariners pulled off the improbable win.

It was a tremendous turn of events for the betting public, however. According to Action Network, 65 percent of all bets placed on the game backed Seattle (+130) and 87 percent of all money wagered on the moneyline had the Mariners winning.

Meanwhile, the Angels are now 14 games under .500 and 11 games back of the Wild Card. The Mariners now how a half-game lead on the first Wild Card and look more like a playoff team each day.

Seattle is now +1200 to win the American League at Tipico Sportsbook. Fourth-best behind the Astros (+155), Yankees (+175) and Blue Jays (+750).
