Damian Lillard will be missed as he recovers from abdominal surgery. And CJ McCollum will be welcomed back Monday in Orlando after missing 18 games recovering from a lung injury. But right now, the best thing going for the Blazers (17-25) is the 22-year-old point guard who was the 24th overall pick in the 2018 draft. “He’s becoming like everybody’s favorite guy,” Blazers coach Chauncey Billups said.

I asked Billups on Saturday what Simons’ emergence meant for the future of the Blazers, and it was like I pulled the pin and dropped a live grenade into his lap. “That’s something that is big picture, and really, I’m just staying in the moment, to be honest,” Billups said. “I can’t step out of the moment. The chance at a bigger role couldn’t come at a better time for Simons, as he is eligible for a rookie contract extension. A source said the Blazers and Simons’ agent, Bill Duffy, have not yet engaged in discussions, but are expected to closer to the Oct. 18 deadline. “I don’t know anything about the extension; I’m focused on the season,” Simons said. “I know it’s a big season for me. So I’m not worried about it. My priority is to go out there and play well.”
