Colts place G Quenton Nelson, LT Eric Fisher on COVID-19 list

Colts placed Quenton Nelson and Eric Fisher on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

The Indianapolis Colts placed left guard Quenton Nelson and left tackle Eric Fisher on the reserve/COVID-19 list, the team announced Thursday.

Nelson just returned from foot surgery and while he’s optimistic he will be ready for Week 1, it remains to be seen how this time off will impact his preparation to get ready for the regular-season opener. Replacing Nelson is likely going to be veteran guard Chris Reed.

Fisher has spent the entire offseason working to get back from Achilles surgery. He has been on the PUP list since the start of training camp, and it isn’t clear when he will be able to return now that he has to quarantine.

As it stands entering the preseason finale on Friday, Julién Davenport has been leading the competition for the starting left tackle spot while Fisher has been out.

The Colts also signed tight end Andrew Vollert, who was cut earlier in the week.

Colts sign P Austin Rehkow, TE Andrew Vollert to the practice squad

Colts make some practice squad moves.

The Indianapolis Colts signed punter Austin Rehkow and tight end Andrew Vollert to the practice squad, the team announced Wednesday.

Despite releasing veteran punter Ryan Allen from the practice squad this week, the Colts still added another punter to the roster. The return of Rigoberto Sanchez from a procedure to remove a cancerous tumor gave them their starting punter back but it seems the team still wants a bit of insurance.

Rehkow entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2017 with the Buffalo Bills. He also spent some time with the New York Giants (2018) before joining the AAF in 2019. There he spent time with the Salt Lake City Stallions before joining the XFL and the Houston Roughnecks in 2020.

Vollert has had a stint with the Colts before during the offseason and in training camp. He initially signed with the Cardinals as an undrafted free agent in 2018.

Colts activate TE Andrew Vollert from Commissioner’s Exempt List

Colts make a roster move.

The Indianapolis Colts activated tight end Andrew Vollert from the Commissioner’s Exempt List and waived-injured wide receiver Chad Williams, the team announced Monday.

Vollert was signed “under a roster exemption, labeled commissioner’s permission,” per the Indianapolis Star, so he wasn’t on the active roster just yet. However, the Colts made it official on Monday by moving him to the active roster.

The Colts are a bit thin at tight end right now. Jack Doyle is dealing with a neck injury while Xavier Grimble and Ian Bunting have both missed practice the last few days. They did activate Mo Alie-Cox from the PUP list, which is a good sign. And Trey Burton has recently come to life in the passing game.

Williams had some flashes throughout the first week of padded practices but now heads to waivers. If he clears waivers, he will revert back to the injured reserve list for the Colts.

Colts claim TE Andrew Vollert

Colts add some TE depth.

The Indianapolis Colts claimed tight end Andrew Vollert off of waivers on Friday, per the league’s transaction wire.

Vollert, 25, is a product of San Jose State. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent following the 2018 NFL Draft. He was waived at the roster cuts and signed to the practice squad where he would remain until the team released him in October 2018.

He has also spent time with the Bengals, Chargers and Panthers.

The Colts have some thin depth at tight end right now with Jack Doyle missing practices due to a neck injury. He will be competing for a roster spot in the tight end room, and it will be interesting to see what happens with Doyle’s injury timeline.

Panthers waive tight end to make room for defensive end Jalen Jelks

The Panthers have waived former Chargers tight end Andrew Vollert to make room for former Cowboys defensive end Jalen Jelks.

The Panthers have waived former Chargers tight end Andrew Vollert to make room for former Cowboys defensive end Jalen Jelks, who they picked up off waivers a few days ago. Now that he has passed his physical and the COVID-19 protocols, he’s free to join his teammates at training camp. Jelks is currently on the field wearing No. 73.

Vollert had a viral moment last week when he had a colorful reaction to being cut on Hard Knocks. The next NFL team he signs with will be his fourth in less than a year and a half.

As for Jelks, he offers another option on the edge, a spot that lost some depth when 2019 fourth-round pick Christian Miller decided to take the high-risk opt-out for this season.

Dallas waived Jelks to make room for Everson Griffen. The previous regime thought highly enough of him to put Jelks on “injured reserve” for his entire rookie season. Mike McCarthy has replaced Jason Garrett and overseen a dramatic restructure of their defensive line, leaving Jelks out of the picture.

In Carolina, he will battle for a roster spot at the bottom of the depth chart against undrafted rookie Myles Adams and veteran Davonte Lambert.

Panthers announce they’ve signed 3 players, waived 4

The Carolina Panthers announced a series of roster moves this morning.

The Carolina Panthers announced a series of roster moves this morning. The team has added three new players to their roster and waived four others. Here is a quick review of who’s in and who’s out.

Signed: WR/KR Tommylee Lewis

Lewis was one of the three players the team tried out on Saturday. On offense, he brings experience with new coordinator Joe Brady over from their time together with the Saints. Lewis also adds another quality return specialist behind Pharoh Cooper.

Signed: TE Andrew Vollert

Vollert was waived by the Chargers recently in a moment that made the cut on this season’s first episode of Hard Knocks. He has previously put in time with the Bengals, as well. Carolina doesn’t have much depth at tight end, so he should have a legitimate chance to make the roster.

Signed: WR Marken Michel

Michel has spent most of his professional career in the CFL. From 2017-2018 he played 24 games for Calgary, totaling 72 catches, 1,215 yards and eight touchdowns. He is the older brother of Patriots running back Sony Michel.

Waived: WR/KR DeAndrew White

Lewis has a similar skillset to White and a lot more experience in the NFL to boot. The addition of Lewis predictably made White expendable.

Waived: TE Cam Sutton

One of our favorite undrafted rookies has gotten the axe. Sutton has a ton of athleticism for his size, but the lack of preseason games hurt his chances. Vollert takes his spot and may also push out Giovanni Ricci.

Waived: LB Kyahva Tezino

Tezino didn’t last long, as he was picked up off waivers from the Patriots only a couple weeks ago. His getting cut is good news for other undrafted rookies like Sam Franklin and David Reese.

Waived: LB Jason Ferris (IR)

Ferris was also waived from the injured reserve list.

Report: Panthers working out former Chargers TE Andrew Vollert

According to a report by Tom Pelissero at NFL Network, the team is bringing in former Los Angeles Chargers tight end Andrew Vollert for a workout on Thursday.

Tight end is the weakest position group for the Carolina Panthers on offense right now, so it makes sense to bring in some outside help. Long-time veteran Greg Olsen was never really replaced and the team’s big-ticket item at the position this offseason was Seth DeValve, who was waived with a non-football injury.

According to a report by Tom Pelissero at NFL Network, the team is bringing in former Los Angeles Chargers tight end Andrew Vollert for a workout on Thursday.

Here’s the clip of Vollert’s “colorful” moment on the season premiere of HBO’s Hard Knocks when he was cut. (NSFW)

Vollert (6-foot-5, 245 pounds), played his college football at three different schools, finishing up at Weber State, where he totaled 12 touchdowns from 2016-2017. He went undrafted and was first signed by the Cardinals in 2018. Vollert also put in time with the Bengals before moving on to the Chargers. He tore his ACL during the preseason last year and has not played in a regular season game as of yet.

If he signs, don’t expect Vollert to compete with Ian Thomas for the top tight end job on the team. He would have to battle undrafted free agents Cam Sutton and Giovanni Ricci for a roster spot.
