Dolphins HC Mike McDaniel shares thoughts on the trajectory of his defense

The defense has stepped up since the Week 4 loss to Buffalo

Following their dominant 34-13 victory over the division-rival New York Jets on Friday, Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel was asked about the trajectory of his team’s defense

McDaniel responded by hand-signaling an upward trajectory.

“I think our defense was kind of overlooked for a while,” he said. “I think since Week 8 up until this game, we had been number one in the league in defense stopping the run, and I think that epitomizes the whole team.”

Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio’s unit was dominant in the Week 12 blowout of the Jets, totaling seven sacks, two interceptions and a forced fumble.

“This has been hard work and dedication each week, belief in what they’re being coached, and complete ownership of responsibilities,” added McDaniel.

In the seven games since the Buffalo Bills dropped 48 points on the Dolphins, teams have averaged under 20 points against Fangio’s defense. The Philadephia Eagles are the only team to score more than 30 points on them since Week 4.

There have been a multitude of moving pieces on the team’s defensive depth chart, with injuries to the secondary and a deep linebacker room. Pairing corners Jalen Ramsey and Xavien Howard has added more strength to the Miami pass defense.

However, the unfortunate injury to linebacker Jaelen Phillips will be a massive blow to the defense moving forward. It will take some adjustments out of the front seven with players such as Andrew Van Ginkel, Jerome Baker and David Long Jr. needing to step up in Phillips’ absence in order for the defensive success to continue.

News and notes from Miami’s 34-13 Black Friday victory against the New York Jets

News and notes from a Black Friday W.

The Miami Dolphins went into MetLife Stadium on a short week and rolled to victory over the New York Jets, 34-13.

Despite some sloppy play and a devastating injury to pass-rusher Jaelan Phillips, Miami is now 8-3, in control of their AFC East destiny and very much alive in the top-seed conversation with a handful of other AFC teams.

Miami relied on a massive defensive performance as well as terrific games from their skill position triplets of Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle and Raheem Mostert.

Orchestrating this, as the football-like point guard he is, Tua Tagovailoa had a fair game, with two ill-timed interceptions. However, the second was a net positive and led to a Hail Mary try, that Miami’s Jevon Holland intercepted and proceeded to take coast-to-coast for a 99-yard touchdown.

The return score was the third-longest interception for a touchdown in Dolphins history with the second being a 100-yarder by Brock Marion in 2002. The first was famously Louis Oliver’s epic 103-yard return in 1992, as both of those top-two were against the Buffalo Bills.

The Miami Dolphins are 9-5 in their 14 games against the Jets at MetLife Stadium since the place opened in 2010.

Here are some more notes from the victory:

News, notes and nuggets heading into Dolphins-Jets Black Friday Game

Some tidbits for Friday’s action.

The 7-3 Miami Dolphins, who are in first place in the AFC East, head to New Jersey this holiday week to face the New York Jets in the NFL’s first-ever Black Friday game. Interestingly enough, this will be Miami’s fifth regular season game on a Friday in team history.

The first two were in 1966 against the Oakland Raiders on September 2, and the second was against the Jets on September 9.

Miami and New York met again on a Friday on the last game of the regular season in 1983 (December 6).

Most recently, the Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs moved up their regularly scheduled game two days due to Hurricane Wilma and played Friday, October 21, 2005.

As far as the all-time series between the rivals, the Dolphins have won 11 of the past 14 games against the Jets, including four of the past five.

Here are a few more notes heading into Friday:

News and notes from Dolphins 20-13 victory over the Raiders

Some nuggets from Sunday’s win.

The Miami Dolphins returned from their Week 10 bye on Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium and dealt the Las Vegas Raiders their first loss under interim head coach Antonio Pierce, as Miami’s defense was key in the 20-13 win.

Mike McDaniel’s team gets to 7-3, still holds a 1.5-game first-place lead in the AFC East division and heads into a short week with a Black Friday matchup at MetLife Stadium against the New York Jets in five days.

With a four-game stretch of very winnable games ahead, the Dolphins needed this momentum to start the second half of their 2023 season.

Before getting ahead to that Week 12 matchup, here’s a look at some of the news, notes and nuggets from Miami’s win over Las Vegas.

News and notes heading into Dolphins’ Week 9 matchup against Chiefs

Some news and notes for Sunday’s game.

The Miami Dolphins are overseas in Frankfurt, Germany to face the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs at Deutsche Bank Park on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. ET.

A win would make Miami 7-2 for the first time since the year 2000.

Including the playoffs, where the Dolphins are 3-0 all-time against the Chiefs, Miami leads the franchise series 16-15. However, Kansas City has won the last three meetings (2014, 2017 and 2020).

Over their last five meetings between the franchises, the winning team has averaged 33 points in their victories. The Dolphins won 2008 and 2011 trips to Arrowhead and are technically the visiting teams on Sunday.

Wisconsin boasts two of the PFF’s top 10 highest-graded NFL edge rushers in 2023

Two former Badgers are off to great starts to 2023:

The Wisconsin football program is commonly known for its offensive line and running back play. The two positions have dominated the NFL, with big names including Jonathan Taylor, Melvin Gordon, James White, Joe Thomas, Ryan Ramczyk, Tyler Biadasz and Travis Frederick.

But the Badgers as of late have also produced phenomenal NFL talent at another position: outside linebacker/edge rusher.

Two of those players are off to terrific starts to the 2023 season: Steelers’ T.J. Watt and Dolpins’ Andrew Van Ginkel.

Through four weeks Watt has recorded 13 total tackles, six sacks, 2.5 run stuffs, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and two passes defended. Van Ginkel, on the other hand, has tallied 19 total tackles, three sacks, two stuffs and one fumble recovery.

The two former Badgers have played well enough to be two of PFF’s top 10 highest-graded edge rushers so far in 2023:

News and notes heading into Dolphins-Bills matchup in Week 4

A look at some statistics for Miami before the AFC East battle.

The Miami Dolphins have a 24-hour rule, which means it’s time to move past a historical performance and look toward a monumental task, as the Dolphins head to Western New York to face the hated rival Buffalo Bills.

Sean McDermott’s team has taken four of the last five and beat Miami at home each season from 2017 through last year, including a Wild Card playoff game.

The Dolphins do lead the all-time series 61-52-1 with the Bills leading 4-1 in the postseason. Miami will be seeking their first 4-0 start to a season since 1995 and their seventh in team history including 1972, 1979, 1981, 1984 and 1992.

So far this season, the Dolphins’ offense has totaled 1,651 yards, averaging 8.4 yards per play and have generated more yardage and points through the first three games of a season than any NFL team since the AFL-NFL merger.

Miami leads the NFL in several explosive play categories, including most plays of 10+ yards and most plays of 25+ yards. Their 60 plays of 10+ yards are tied for the most in the first three games of a season since at least 2000 when the New England Patriots had 60 10+ yard plays in the first three games of 2000.

This offense is playing as prolific as any NFL team has to start three games in recent memory and even historically in the game, as they nearly broke an all-time single-game scoring record Sunday in their home opener against the Denver Broncos. They very well could have gotten a field goal and hit for 73 points, tying the record, but Mike McDaniel showed mercy and class, respectfully kneeling on the ball instead.

The Dolphins are building more momentum than seemingly ever, and here are more news and notes heading into Week 4’s pivotal contest, where Miami will enter as the AFC’s only remaining unbeaten team, joining the league’s only others – the Philadelphia Eagles and the San Francisco 49ers.

WATCH: Former Wisconsin LB Andrew Van Ginkel shines on Sunday Night Football

The former Wisconsin LB had a big night on football’s biggest stage:

It may be time we officially call for teams to select Wisconsin linebackers higher in the NFL Draft.

Several have gone severely under-drafted just in the last few years, including Nick Herbig (132nd overall) Leo Chenal (103rd overall), Jack Sanborn (undrafted), T.J. Edwards (undrafted) and T.J. Watt (30th overall).

Related: Numbers show that former Badger T.J. Watt is the most prolific pass-rusher in NFL history

Another example is Andrew Van Ginkel, who was selected by the Miami Dolphins at No. 151 overall in the 2019 NFL Draft.

The former Badger played sparingly in his first NFL season but went on to appear in every game for the Dolphins from 2020-today, recording 12 sacks, one interception, four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and 192 total tackles.

Van Ginkel was thrust into a starting role on Sunday Night Football against the Patriots this week. To nobody’s surprise, he made his presence felt with a second-quarter hurry that almost led to a Mac Jones fumble and a fourth-quarter sack.

Van Ginkel signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins ahead of the 2023 season, though could be in line for a bigger payday if his solid play continues.

The Miami Dolphins hit the field one last time on Thursday to close out their mandatory team minicamp. Following this session, the players and coaches will take a well-earned break from the game until training camp in July.

The time away will give players a chance to rest, recover and even return to their hometowns to do what all Dolphins do – support causes and fundraise for charitable endeavors. Philanthropy of all forms is an area in which the Dolphins are a first-class organization. Supporting the community has been a cornerstone of this franchise ever since legendary head coach Don Shula came to Miami in 1970.

The work throughout history that this team has done off the field is more impressive than the successes they’ve had on the field. This is, of course, a team with a pair of championships and a perfect season included.

Whether it’s raising money for organizations within South Florida, running food drives or supporting the Dolphins Challenge Cancer initiative, the players and employees continue to go above and beyond the call of duty.

Several players have shown consistency in their off-field work like Jaelan Phillips, Tyreek Hill and Emmanuel Ogbah to name a few. Plenty of Dolphins have been extremely charitable to help support causes close to them, one being linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel.

During the time away from the practice field, Van Ginkel and his wife, Samantha, will head back to their home state of Iowa, where, this Saturday, June 10, they’ve organized a local event in partnership with Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. The ALSF funds impactful research, raising awareness, supporting families and empowering everyone to help cure childhood cancer.

Childhood cancer has been something the Van Ginkels have been passionate about as well as combating and raising awareness and money for, as, tragically, Andrew lost his sister to the disease when she was just nine years old. Samantha has also been a staunch supporter of battling this plague and started a Love Your Melon Campus Crew back in college, another organization to fight childhood cancer.

The Van Ginkels will host their event at the Rock Valley Sports Complex, and you don’t have to necessarily be in-state to support “Andrew Van Ginkel’s Lemonade Stand.” 100% of all proceeds will help fight childhood cancer, and this adds to the list of supportive endeavors made by the couple within the community.

They were among several Dolphin players and employees to contribute to a GoFundMe campaign recently set up to honor and support the family of Eric Carmona. Carmona tragically passed away in an accident and the campaign is nearly at $77,000 to support his wife and four children.

The linebacker has excelled on the field as well, earning an orange practice jersey last week, and even worked as an inside linebacker in organized team activities to add to his usual outside work.

Van Ginkel was a free agent in the offseason, but even while courted by half a dozen other teams, he remained a Dolphin and should be a key piece to Vic Fangio’s defense.

You, as well, can contribute to the Van Ginkels ALSF efforts as well as the Eric Carmona GoFundMe.
