Eagles expected to decline fifth-year option on LT Andre Dillard

Philadelphia Eagles expected to decline fifth-year option on 2019 first-round pick and backup left tackle Andre Dillard

Day two of the NFL draft is set to get underway shortly and Philadelphia is back in the news, reporting that the Eagles are not expected to pick up the fifth-year option on 2019 first-round pick, Andre Dillard.

The move isn’t a surprise after Dillard lost the training camp battle with Jordan Mailata last summer, resulting in the former Australian Pro Rugby player signing a massive deal before free agency.

The Eagles traded up to No. 22 overall in 2019 to draft Dillard out of Washington State, and he would have been due almost $12 million in 2023 as a backup. Philadelphia would ideally like to trade Dillard during the draft to recoup some of the assets lost in the Jordan Davis and A.J. Brown deals from Thursday night.

Eagles LT Andre Dillard drawing strong interest as NFL trade deadline approaches

NFL trade deadline: Philadelphia Eagles left tackle Andre Dillard drawing strong interest as Nov. 2 looms

As the Eagles prepare for a road contest against the Raiders, backup tackle Andre Dillard is again drawing strong trade as teams around the league shuffle while dealing with injuries.

According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, Dillard is among several big names around the league being discussed.

Eagles offensive tackle Andre Dillard: He was drafted to be the left tackle of the future, but it hasn’t quite worked out like that. Instead, that title has gone to seventh-round find Jordan Mailata. Dillard hasn’t been in the starting lineup, and recently, he has been taking reps at guard in practice. So, teams have been calling with trade interest. He did impress while playing left tackle against the Panthers, and that improved his stock. The Eagles won’t give him away, and there are scenarios where he’s a part of their future, anyway. But teams believe a quality second-day pick would be enough to pry Dillard away.

With Lane Johnson and Mailata in and out of the lineup at times, Howie Roseman could decide to stay the course with Dillard, possibly replacing his longtime right tackle in 2022 for salary cap purposes.

With the Eagles stocked with draft assets, several scenarios are in play.

The sweepstakes to acquire Andre Dillard has started according to Jeff McLane of The Inquirer who reports that teams from around the leagues have started to call Philadelphia.

But even before Dillard strained his right knee last week, it was clear that [Jordan] Mailata had a firm grasp on the position. The word had increasingly gotten out around the NFL as teams, directly or not, inquired about Dillard’s availability, per league sources.

Talented left tackles are a premium in the NFL and regardless of how you feel about Dillard, he’s a former first-round pick and still raw from a talent and physicality standpoint.
