Jake Paul: ‘I’m bigger in the sport than (Conor McGregor) is’

Jake Paul: “I’m bigger in the sport than (Conor McGregor) is.”

Is Jake Paul a bigger attraction than MMA star Conor McGregor? Paul thinks so.

And the YouTuber-turned-boxer holds out hope that he’ll meet McGregor in the ring after years of calling out the Irishman. Paul, who is considerably bigger than McGregor, believes he’d beat him.

Paul (7-1, 4 KOs) is scheduled to fight Andre August on Friday in Orlando, Florida (DAZN). McGregor hasn’t fought since he broke his leg against Dustin Poirier in 2021.

“McGregor would be pretty freaking massive and entertaining and fun. I would beat his a–,” Paul told DAZN Boxing. “… He won’t fight me. At this point it’s funny how it went from me calling him out and that seeming crazy to now me being bigger in the sport than he is.

“And him knowing my skill level is greater than his in such a short amount of time. Life’s crazy.”

Paul is 5-0 against MMA fighters (Ben Askren, Tyrone Woodley (twice), Anderson Silva and Nate Diaz). McGregor, 35, has taken part in one boxing match, his 10th-round knockout loss to Floyd Mayweather in 2017.

August (10-1, 5 KOs) is only the second boxer Paul will have faced, after his loss to Tommy Fury last February.

Jake Paul insists he’s on a collision course with superstar Canelo Alvarez

YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul insists he’s on a collision course with superstar Canelo Alvarez.

Jake Paul vs. Canelo Alvarez? Paul doesn’t believe the idea is farfetched.

The YouTuber-turned-boxer is a latecomer to the sport, with only eight fights against mostly MMA fighters. However, he’s convinced that the matchup will make sense at some point soon.

He compared a showdown with the Mexican superstar to Tyson Fury’s fight with MMA star Francis Ngannou.

Paul (7-1, 4 KOs) is scheduled to fight journeyman boxer Andre August (10-1-1, 5 KOs) on Friday in Orlando, Florida (DAZN).

“I think the path that I’m on now tees me up in the future to fight Canelo,” Paul told The MMA Hour. “It’s even just showing him that I can go 10 or 12 rounds with you, [that] I’ve done that with real, legitimate pro boxers and beat them.

“So when I beat these guys in the year or two to come, and continue to raise the level of opposition, I think me vs. Canelo becomes a really interesting fight and something that a lot of people would be like, ‘Oh, Jake’s going to get destroyed.’

“But there’s that fun thing in your mind, the same thing with Francis Ngannou and Tyson Fury. ‘Yeah, but [Paul is] the bigger guy who has punching power!’ So it becomes this really fun, interesting fight that I think is historical.

“And Canelo has expressed interest [in fighting Paul] in interviews, so I think we’re closer than we think.”

How would Paul fare against the future Hall of Famer?

He has said repeatedly that he will become a world champion. And he figures he’ll have to go through Alvarez to get there.

“Yeah, this is just my road to world champion and I’ve said it since day one that I’m gonna be a world champion and fight in the biggest fights in the world and everyone’s gonna see that,” he told Fight Freaks Unite.

“And I’m gonna beat Canelo and all of these things. … Now it’s just me putting that into action, gaining the experience and it not being about the business side or the entertainment side.”

The 35-year-old Texan will be only the second boxer Paul, 26, has faced, following his split decision loss to Tommy Fury this past February. Paul bounced back from his first setback by easily outpointing MMA fighter Nate Diaz in August. August probably is no better than Fury was. He has won five consecutive fights since he was stopped by journeyman Eric Abraham in 2018 but he has faced no one of note and has taken part only in four- and six-rounders. The fight on Friday is set for eight rounds.

Andre August aims to make his name off Jake Paul in boxing match that’s ‘really a dream come true’

When Andre August steps into the ring with Jake Paul, he’ll have the mindset that the opportunity is special regardless of others’ opinions.

When [autotag]Andre August[/autotag] steps into the ring with [autotag]Jake Paul[/autotag], he’ll do so with the mindset that the opportunity is special regardless of what anyone thinks.

August meets Paul in an eight-round cruiserweight boxing match Friday at the Caribe Royale Resort in Orlando, Fla. The fight headlines an eight-fight card that streams on DAZN.

August, 35, never expected to get a phone call with an offer to fight Paul, the YouTube sensation turned professional boxer. And the way he sees it, he has a golden opportunity to finally make a name for himself this late in his career.

“I never expected it. It was really an amazing thing for me,” August, who made his professional debut in 2013, told MMA Junkie. “I’m cool with it, and I’m pretty sure he’s cool with it, too. They actually picked me. I’m ready to get it on and show y’all some fireworks on December 15th. …

“(A win) does a bunch of things for me. It’s really a blessing. It’s really a dream come true. It does a lot, things I can’t even speak on or imagine. I just could say I’m blessed.”

Regardless of where you stand on the polarizing Paul, the fact of the matter is that he’s made a name for himself in boxing ever since his pro debut in 2020. Mainly, Paul, who’s 7-1, has achieved his notoriety by calling out and fighting former UFC stars past their primes, as he holds victories over Ben Askren, Tyron Woodley (twice), Anderson Silva, and most recently Nate Diaz this past August.

Paul’s only other fight against a pure boxer resulted in defeat when he dropped a split decision to Tommy Fury in February. August, who’s 10-1 and riding a five-fight winning streak, represents Paul’s second encounter with a pure boxer. Perhaps he could expose Paul, but August gives him more credit for his boxing skills than most observers.

“Even if the people that say anything about him as far as him being a YouTuber or whatever, well, everyone that’s saying something, why don’t these guys be able to just get in the ring and do something?” August said. “It’s not easy to get in the ring and make it happen and actually fight anybody, even if it’s an MMA fighter. MMA fighters are fighters. We’re all fighters at the end of the day. I just take my hat off to him and respect him for that. Everybody that’s saying something about the situation, I don’t really feed into it because they’re not getting in the ring and making things happen.”

Bottom line: August expects a challenge when he throws hands with Paul.

“Boxing is boxing, man. Anything can happen,” August said. “… Jake is a boxer himself. Everyone needs to stop saying he’s just a YouTuber. This guy has actually been putting in work. He has real boxers in his corner that are actually training him, people that have way more experience than I have. He’s doing what he needs to do to become whatever he needs to become. …

“I’m not really good on predictions. We both have punching power, and that’s very exciting for the people to see. He’s not a pure boxer, but at the same time, he can fight. All I can say to you guys is on December 15th you’re gonna see fireworks. It’s gonna be an amazing fight to watch.”

Fight Week: ‘Bam’ Rodriguez vs. Sunny Edwards, David Morrell, Jake Paul next up

Fight Week: ‘Bam’ Rodriguez vs. Sunny Edwards highlights a busy weekend that also includes David Morrell and Jake Paul in separate fights.

FIGHT WEEK

The little men will take center stage when Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez and Sunny Edwards face off Saturday in Arizona. On the same day, in Minneapolis, top 168-pound contender David Morrell will face Sena Agbeko. And Jake Paul returns to the ring on Friday.

JESSE “BAM” RODRIGUEZ (18-0, 11 KOs)
vs. SUNNY EDWARDS (20-0, 4 KOs)

  • Date: Saturday, Dec. 16
  • Time: 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT (main event later in show)
  • Where: Desert Diamond Arena, Glendale, Arizona
  • TV/Stream: DAZN
  • Division: Flyweight (112 pounds)
  • At stake: Edwards’ IBF and Rodriguez’s WBO titles
  • Odds: Rodriguez 2-1 favorite (average of multiple outlets)
  • Also on the card: Murodjon Akhmadaliev vs. Kevin Gonzalez, junior featherweights; Galal Yafai vs. Rocco Santomauro, flyweights; Peter McGrail vs. Ja’Rico O’Quinn, junior featherweights
  • Prediction: Rodriguez UD
  • Background: Rodriguez and Edwards will face off in a battle of skillful, unbeaten little men who are on the precipice of stardom. Rodriguez, a 23-year-old from San Antonio, made a splash when he outpointed veteran Carlos Cuadras to win a vacant 115-pound title and knocked out rugged, experienced Srisaket Sor Rungvisai in eight rounds in his first defense last year. He defended one more time before moving down to 112 pounds, at which he easily outpointed Cristian Gonzalez to win a major belt and become a two-division champ. Edwards is a light puncher but that hasn’t prevented him from dominating his opponents. The 27-year-old from London took Moruti Mthalane’s 112-pound title by a one-sided decision in 2021 and has successfully defended four times. He’s coming off a unanimous decision over previously unbeaten Andres Campos on June 10. Edwards will be making his U.S. debut.

DAVID MORRELL (9-0, 8 KOs)
vs. SENA AGBEKO (28-2, 22, KOs)

  • Date: Saturday, Dec. 16
  • Time: 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT (main event later in show)
  • Where: The Armory, Minneapolis
  • TV/Stream: Showtime
  • Division: Super middleweight (168 pounds)
  • At stake: No major titles
  • Odds: Morrell 9-1 favorite (average of multiple outlets)
  • Also on the card: Julio Cesar Martinez vs. Angelino Cordova, flyweights (for Martinez’s WBC title); Chris Colbert vs. Jose Valenzuela, lightweights; Kenneth Sims Jr. vs. Alfredo Santiago, junior welterweights
  • Prediction: Morrell KO 8
  • Background: Morrell, the gifted product of the Cuban amateur system, has been pushing for a showdown with fellow contender David Benavidez and other big-time fights. And those events will come if he continues to dominate opponents. The 25-year-old southpaw has knocked out eight of his nine foes – including Yamaguchi Falcao in the first round in April – and has barely lost a round in his fast-tracked professional career. He’s a significant favorite to beat Agbeko. The 31-year-old Ghanaian has won five consecutive fights (four by knockout) since he lost a near-shutout decision against Vladimir Shishkin in 2021. His most recent fight was on Oct. 14, when he stopped journeyman Bruno Leonardo Romay in two rounds. However, Morrell is a significant step up in opposition for him. Agbeko lives in Nashville.

JAKE PAUL (7-1, 4 KOs)
vs. ANDRE AUGUST (10-1-1, 5 KOs)

  • Date: Friday, Dec. 15
  • Time: 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT (main event later in show)
  • Where: Caribe Royale Orlando, Orlando, Florida
  • TV/Stream: DAZN
  • Division: Cruiserweight (200 pounds)
