Another injury blow for Adams: USMNT star out ‘months’ after back surgery

The hits just keep coming for Adams and the USMNT

The bad news just keeps coming for the U.S. men’s national team.

Tyler Adams will miss the start of the Premier League season, as Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola said that the USMNT midfielder underwent back surgery.

A report from the BBC quoted Iraola as saying that Adams will be “out for some time.”

“It is difficult to say how long,” said the Cherries boss. “He won’t be fit for the start of the season. But September? October? I don’t know.”

According to Iraola, Adams played through back pain at the 2024 Copa América. During the final few weeks of the 2023-24 season, the New York native was barely available for Bournemouth with a back issue.

“He wanted to play Copa América because it was very important for him, but he had restrictions and was still in pain,” explained Iraola. “Two days after they were knocked out, he had surgery.”

Adams played only 45 minutes in the first two USMNT matches at Copa América, much to his chagrin. He played the full 90 minutes as the U.S. lost to Uruguay on July 2, ending the team’s run in the tournament in the group stage.

Latest injury blow for Adams

The potential for Adams spending months on the sideline is sadly familiar territory for the 25-year-old.

Between back and hamstring injuries, Adams appeared just five times for Bournemouth across all competitions in 2023-24, playing 138 minutes.

Adams had joined the Cherries last summer despite still being in the midst of recovering from a separate hamstring problem. His injury woes go back to March 2023, and have involved two surgeries on his hamstring before this latest procedure on his back.

Adams left out once again as Bournemouth wraps Premier League season

It’s a downer ending for Adams in what was largely a lost first season with the Cherries

Tyler Adams didn’t get the end to the season he was likely hoping for.

The Bournemouth and U.S. men’s national team midfielder was held out of his side’s final match of the season on Sunday.

Following the Cherries’ 2-1 loss at Chelsea, manager Andoni Iraola told reporters that Adams did not play for precautionary reasons.

Adams ended a month-long spell on the sidelines with a 10-minute cameo in Bournemouth’s penultimate game of the season on May 11, but was not in uniform as the Cherries concluded the 2023-24 campaign.

The news is one more bit of frustration for Adams in what was essentially a lost season. Between recovery from a hamstring injury sustained 14 months ago with Leeds, a second surgical procedure on that issue, and back spasms, the USMNT midfielder played just 138 minutes for Bournemouth this season.

2023-24 largely a lost season for Adams

Adams was only in uniform six times, and his minutes came from just four appearances spread across the season. His comeback from his initial injury came in September, but after just one 20-minute appearance the 25-year-old suffered a setback, eventually undergoing surgery again.

The New York native would miss 21 more matches recovering from that procedure before being an unused substitute in Bournemouth’s 2-2 draw with Sheffield United on March 9. Adams finally made his Premier League debut for the Cherries four days later in a win over Luton Town, and had a standout showing in his one and only start (a 2-1 victory over Everton on March 30).

Between that and his unreal goal for the USMNT in the Concacaf Nations League final, it seemed like Adams was finally, truly back.

However, after being an unused substitute against Crystal Palace in early April, Adams ended up with back spasms that proved persistent. Iraola ended up having to leave Adams out of seven of the Cherries’ final eight matches of the season as a result.

With the Copa América looming, the USMNT will be hoping that Adams — who is paramount for Gregg Berhalter — will benefit from Bournemouth’s caution. The U.S. will play friendlies against Colombia and Brazil early next month as part of its preparations for its biggest test since the 2022 World Cup.

However, it’s far from ideal that the best scenario for Adams this summer is having to play games of enormous importance after losing nearly an entire season in this manner.

USMNT midfielder Adams will return to Bournemouth squad following back injury

The USMNT midfielder has missed seven games with a back injury

After missing seven straight games with a back injury, Tyler Adams is finally set to return for Bournemouth.

The U.S. men’s national team midfielder will be part of the Cherries squad for Saturday’s game against Brentford, manager Andoni Iraola said at his pre-match press conference.

“Lloyd Kelly will play tomorrow. He has been involved in training normally so we have no concerns about this,” Iraola said on Friday.

“So, we’ve recovered Lloyd, Tyler Adams and Marcus Tavernier will also be part of the squad.”

Adams first suffered back spasms in early April, an injury that popped up after he had only just returned from two separate hamstring surgeries.

The 25-year-old missed the better part of a year after undergoing hamstring surgery in March 2023, then being forced to have a second operation in October after suffering a setback following his Bournemouth debut.

Between the injuries, Adams has played just three matches for Bournemouth in his first season with the club.

After Saturday’s game, the Cheries will have just one match remaining in the campaign: a trip to Chelsea on May 19.

Even if Adams isn’t able to help his club side much in the season’s home stretch, his return to fitness is huge for his chances of making the USMNT roster for the Copa América.

Head coach Gregg Berhalter has until June 12 to send in his final roster for the tournament, which kicks off later in the month.

Tyler Adams remains sidelined for Bournemouth clash with Arsenal

Adams is running out of time to make another Premier League appearance this season

Tyler Adams remains out for Bournemouth, with the U.S. men’s national team midfielder rapidly running out of time to play a further part in this Premier League campaign.

At a pre-game press conference, Cherries manager Andoni Iraola ruled Adams out for Saturday’s clash with Arsenal.

Adams will have missed seven straight games with back spasms that first bubbled up in early April. The new injury has derailed a promising return from a hamstring issue that effectively cost Adams most of 2023.

After Adams’ second game out, a 2-1 loss to Luton Town, Iraola had expressed some hopes that the back issue would be resolved quickly. More recently, the Bournemouth boss referred to the issue as “not a bad injury” before adding that “we have to be careful with these decisions,” indicating that Adams may not return until he’s completely healed.

The problem? There’s not much time left for that to happen. With the New York native ruled out of the Arsenal clash, there are just two games remaining this season in which he could return. Bournemouth’s final two fixtures are May 11’s home match against Brentford, and a season-ending trip to face Chelsea on May 19.

The Cherries sit 10th in the table, and have little left to play for this season. The club has been safe from relegation worries for some time, and has only the faintest mathematical chance of claiming a Europa Conference League playoff round berth (essentially needing to win three straight while getting significant help from elsewhere in the league).

However, Adams’ performances in his brief spell back on the pitch will likely make Bournemouth fans wonder where the club would be had he been healthy all season. The USMNT No. 6 was at his best in a 2-1 win over Everton in March, shortly after scoring a spectacular long-range goal against Mexico on international duty.

Adams will miss fifth straight Bournemouth match with back injury

It’s becoming an increasingly lost season for the USMNT captain

Tyler Adams can’t catch a break this season.

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has ruled out the American midfielder for a fifth consecutive game as he continues battling back spasms.

Adams will be absent on Wednesday when Bournemouth takes on Wolves, in what is becoming an increasingly lost season for the U.S. men’s national team star.

Iraola was asked on Tuesday whether Adams or Marcus Tavernier would recover from their injuries in time to face Wolves.

“We don’t lose anyone, we don’t recover anyone, so it’s going to be the same players available,” the coach replied at his pre-match press conference.

Adams remains stuck on three appearances for Bournemouth this season, having missed the opening of the season recovering from hamstring surgery back in March 2023 with Leeds.

The 25-year-old suffered an immediate setback after making his Cherries debut in September, and was forced to go back under the knife for a second surgery. Adams would return in March, making two Bournemouth appearances along with two appearances for the USMNT in the Nations League.

Iraola expanded on Adams’ current situation during a press conference ahead of last weekend’s game against Aston Villa.

“Not a bad injury and feeling pain in his muscle, but after so much time out we have to be careful with these decisions,” the coach said. “The medical department are dealing with it. I hope he will be back early but definitely not for Villa.”

After Wednesday’s game against Wolves, Bournemouth has just four matches remaining in the season.

Bournemouth coach Iraola rules Adams out for another game

It will be the fourth straight match Adams has missed with a back injury

Tyler Adams looks set to miss a fourth consecutive match due to back spasms, according to Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola.

Adams has been held out of three straight matches due to back trouble, and Sunday’s trip to Aston Villa appears to be too soon for the U.S. men’s national team midfielder.

Iraola gave updates on several injured Cherries players at his pre-match press conference on Friday, but did not specifically mention Adams among that group.

The coach was then asked about the remainder of his injured players, to which he replied: “Some are getting closer but I don’t expect them for the Villa game, no.”

The back injury is turning into an increasingly frustrating setback for Adams, who only returned from nearly a year out last month.

Adams was sidelined after a hamstring surgery in March 2023, and had to have a second operation after suffering a setback upon his return in September.

The 25-year-old’s start against Everton on March 30 marked his first time playing a full match in over a year.

Overall, Adams has made just three appearances for Bournemouth this season. He made an emphatic return to the USMNT in the Nations League last month, scoring a memorable long-range strike against Mexico in the final.

Bournemouth midfielder Adams misses Luton Town clash with back spasms

Adams was not in uniform for the Cherries after suffering from back issues

Just when everyone thought Tyler Adams was back, the U.S. men’s national team midfielder has — at least for now — returned to the sidelines.

Adams was not in uniform as Bournemouth took on Luton Town on Saturday, marking the second straight match for the Cherries in which the USMNT star did not play.

Following the match, Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola confirmed Adams had been suffering from back spasms throughout the week.

Bournemouth would go on to lose 2-1 at Kenilworth Road after the Hatters staged a late comeback.

Adams was in uniform but did not appear in Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Crystal Palace. That match came three days after Adams stood out in a 2-1 win over Everton, playing 90 minutes for the first time in over a year.

Iraola said before the match that an unspecified malady had thrown the status of several players in doubt.

“This week is going to be difficult,” Iraola told reporters at a pre-match press conference. “We have some cases of — I don’t want to say ‘illness’ — but they are not probably feeling 100 percent, but we still have two days.

“Tomorrow they could come fresh and [if so] they are available for the game. It is true we have some players who are let’s say in doubtful conditions to perform if the game was today.”

On Friday, Bournemouth posted a gallery of photos of its team’s final training session before the clash with the Hatters, but Adams did not appear anywhere among the 70 images.

Heading into this week, Adams had been showing promising signs of finding his form instantly after an excruciating injury layoff. The New York native had effectively missed a full year after a hamstring injury required two separate surgeries.

However, he scored a brilliant goal for the USMNT in the Concacaf Nations League final, and had appeared in Bournemouth’s matches on either side of the international break.

Iraola: Adams ready to ramp up Bournemouth minutes after USMNT exploits

The USMNT midfielder is looking to start his first club game in a year

Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola has said Tyler Adams is ready to ramp up his minutes after a successful return with the U.S. men’s national team.

After a hamstring injury kept him out for the better part of a year, Adams made his Bournemouth return right before the international break, before playing his first USMNT minutes since the 2022 World Cup.

Adams played in both of the USMNT’s Nations League matches, going 40 minutes in the semifinal against Jamaica before playing the first half and scoring a sensational goal in the final against Mexico.

The 25-year-old seems to have returned to England no worse for the wear, as Iraola said he is ready to continue building up his minutes as the Premier League season enters its final stretch.

“I think he’s improving a lot,” Iraola said at a press conference. “He’s in the process of adding minutes. He played 45 minutes in two different games [during the international break] and he finished with good feelings. I think he’s available to play the same amount or even more minutes.”

Bournemouth hosts Everton in the Premier League on Saturday, as Adams aims to start his first club game since March 2023.

USMNT captain Adams returns for Bournemouth after six months out

Adams’ return is a massive boost for the USMNT ahead of the Concacaf Nations League matches later this month

After six months on the sidelines, Tyler Adams is back.

The midfielder came on for Bournemouth in the 71st minute against Luton Town on Wednesday, marking his first appearance since September.

Bournemouth would go on to cap a miraculous comeback, as Antoine Semenyo claimed a brace to give the hosts — who trailed 3-0 at halftime — a stunning 4-3 win.

Barely two hours after Adams was named to a USMNT roster for the first time since the 2022 World Cup, the New York native returned from a hamstring injury that has required two surgeries.

The first came in March 2023, ending his season and playing a major factor in Leeds’ eventual relegation. The second came seven months later, shortly after Adams made a 20-minute Cherries debut that essentially set him right back to square one.

Bournemouth and the USMNT both had to be pleased to see him come on when he replaced Adam Smith in what was a wild match. Adams unsurprisingly stepped into a central midfield role for Andoni Iraola, who had his team see the game out in a 5-2-3 formation.

Shortly before that match kicked off, USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter addressed reporters, discussing what had to happen for Adams to be in the 23-player Nations League squad.

“This decision was basically the output of months of communication with his club to track where he’s at, to see the levels that he’s performing at in training, the loads that he’s doing in training,” explained Berhalter. “Finally, a conversation with [Iraola] two days ago, and really hearing from the coach where he thinks Tyler’s at.”

Per Berhalter, Iraola gave a glowing review of Adams’ progress, which in turn sealed the deal from the USMNT’s perspective.

“He couldn’t say enough good things about [Adams],” said Berhalter. “He’s actually ready to play minutes [Wednesday] in the Premier League. So, we’ll see how that ends up, potentially 30 minutes, 15 minutes, who knows?

“But certainly, they think at the club that he has enough to play up to 45 minutes for us. So once we heard that, we jumped at that idea, because he means so much to the team, both on and off the field. It’d be nice to get him back. His last time with the national team was at the World Cup, so he’s been missed for a while. It’ll be nice to get him back into this group.”

Berhalter made sure to keep the door open for Adams as long as he could, naming him to the team’s 60-player preliminary roster for the upcoming Nations League semifinal against Jamaica (March 21), which will be followed by a contest — either a final or a third-place game —against Mexico or Panama on March 24.

Adams will ‘be out for some time’ after injury setback

The news doesn’t sound good at all for Adams, Bournemouth, or the USMNT

Tyler Adams may not be back after all.

Per Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola, the U.S. men’s national team midfielder has suffered a setback in his return from a long-term hamstring injury.

“I don’t know what to call it, a setback, but he is not feeling well,” said Iraola in quotes published by the Bournemouth Daily Echo. “I couldn’t tell you if it’s exactly the same point, but it’s true that it’s his hamstring that he is not feeling well… It is true that he is going to be out for some time, for sure.”

After a nearly six-month battle with an injury that required surgery at one point, Adams made his Cherries debut mid-week, playing the final 20 minutes of Bournemouth’s 2-0 Carabao Cup win over Stoke City.

However, on Saturday the USMNT captain was not in uniform, with Iraola explaining after a 4-0 battering at the hands of Arsenal that Adams had suffered a setback.

“I think it’s the same area,” added Iraola. “He has been out for a lot of time, so we have to reassess, to reset, to take the good decisions, thinking in everything.”

Tough news for Adams, Cherries, USMNT

Adams was a big summer addition for Bournemouth, who put up a reported $25 million to bring the 24-year-old in from Leeds during the transfer window.

The Cherries have repeatedly emphasized that Adams’ ability to cover so much ground and win the ball back perfectly suits what Iraola has in mind tactically.

However, per a timeline given by the Bournemouth manager, his appearance against Stoke came after just a handful of full training sessions that only began over the past couple of weeks.

Given the amount of time Adams had been out, the results of further exams from club doctors will go a long way in indicating whether Adams has reaggravated the same injury, or if he has picked up a new knock. The latter scenario is a common one for players coming off of a long injury layoff, and may be the lesser of two evils for Adams and Bournemouth at this point.

The news is also far from ideal for the USMNT. Gregg Berhalter will have surely been looking forward to calling his captain back in for the upcoming October friendlies against Germany and Ghana.
