  • Date: Saturday, Nov. 6
  • Time: 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT (main event later in show)
  • Where: MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas
  • TV/Stream: Showtime Pay-per-view
  • Cost: $79.99
  • Division: Super middleweight
  • At stake: Alvarez’s WBA, WBC, WBO and Plant’s IBF titles
  • Pound-for-pound ranking: Alvarez No. 2
  • Odds: Alvarez 8-1 (average of multiple outlets)
  • Also on the card: Anthony Dirrell vs. Marcos Hernandez, super middleweights; Rey Vargas vs. Leonardo Baez, junior featherweights; Elvis Rodriguez vs. Juan Pablo Romero, junior welterweights
  • Prediction: Alvarez KO 10
  • Background: Canelo Alvarez has accomplished as much as any active fighter but has never become one thing: an undisputed champion. He will check that off his list if he beats Plant, who holds the only major 168-pound belt that isn’t in Alvarez’s collection. The 31-year-old Mexican, a four-division titleholder and pound-for-pound star, outpointed Callum Smith to win the WBC and WBA belts last December, stopped Avni Yildirm in three rounds in February and added the WBO title by knocking out Billy Joe Saunders in eight in May. He’s 14-0-1 (8 KOs) since he was outpointed by Floyd Mayweather in 2013, his only loss. He’s 16-1-1 (9 KOs) in major title fights. The 6-foot-1 Plant started his career in 2014 as a middleweight but quickly moved up to super middleweight, which makes him a natural 168-pounder. He has excellent skills, honed during a successful amateur career, as well as unusual speed and athleticism. He won his belt by easily outpointing the favored Jose Uzcategui in January 2019 and successfully defended against Mike Lee (TKO 3) six months later, Vincent Feigenbutz (TKO 11) in February of last year and Caleb Truax (UD) this past January. He has fought only twice in the past two-plus years while Alvarez has fought twice this year. Alvarez is a significant step up in opposition for the Las Vegas-based Tennessean, who, of course, has his own chance to make history.

MIKAELA MAYER (15-0, 5 KOs) VS. MAIVA HAMADOUCHE (22-1, 18 KOs)

  • When: Friday, Nov. 5
  • Where: Virgin Hotels, Las Vegas
  • TV/Stream: ESPN+
  • Division: Junior lightweight
  • At stake: Mayer’s WBO and Hamadouche’s IBF titles
  • Pound-for-pound ranking: None
  • Odds: NA
  • Also on the card: Janibek Alimkhanuly vs. Hassan N’Dam, middleweights
  • Prediction: Mayer UD
  • Background: Mayer could face her stiffest test yet in the ESPN+ main event on Saturday. The 2016 U.S. Olympian has faced increasingly tough opposition, including Ewa Brodnicks to win the WBO title (UD) in October of last year and Erica Anabella Farias in her first and only defense (UD) this past June. The 31-year-old Los Angeles-area product, a polished technician and good athlete, has been able to outbox even her most-accomplished opponents. Hamadouche, also 31, won the vacant IBF title by outpointing Jennifer Salinas in 2016 and has successfully defended six times, including an eighth-round stoppage of Nina Pavlovic last December. That was the Frenchwoman’s most recent fight, meaning she will have been out of the ring for 10-plus months. Hamadouche is an aggressive fighter, which should make for an interesting style matchup against the slick Mayer. She also has an unusually high knockout rate, which is a product of her style but also might be attributable in part to her opposition. Hamadouche competed in the Tokyo Olympics this past summer. She was eliminated in the first round.

Canelo Alvarez predicts he’ll stop Caleb Plant between Rounds 7 and 9

Canelo Alvarez predicted he will stop Caleb Plant between Rounds 7 and 9 on Nov. 6 in Las Vegas.

Canelo Alvarez has a pretty good idea how his pay-per-view fight with Caleb Plant on Nov. 6 in Las Vegas is going to play out.

The Mexican star typically eases into his fights, figures out his opponents and then takes firm control, winning either by a knockout or wide decision.

He said before an open workout on Wednesday that he expects the upcoming fight for the undisputed super middleweight championship to be no different. And he doesn’t believe it will go the distance.

“I feel that the first couple of rounds will be difficult but then, as the fight progresses, in Rounds 7. 8. 9, I feel I am going to be able to get him out of there,” he said through a translator.

Tension between Alvarez (56-1-2, 38 KOs) and Plant (21-0, 12 KOs) boiled over at a recent news conference, as they exchanged open-handed blows.

Alvarez acknowledged the animosity but said he has nothing more to say to his opponent.

“I gave him the message when we had the press conference,” he said. “I don’t think I need to tell him anything else. I’m just prepared and ready to go for Nov. 6.

Alvarez holds the WBA, WBC and WBO titles. Plant is the IBF beltholder.

The fight will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Watch it: Canelo Alvarez, Caleb Plant come to blows at news conference

Watch it: Canelo Alvarez, Caleb Plant came to blows at a news conference to promote their Nov. 6 fight.

The fight has already begun.

Canelo Alvarez and Caleb Plant exchanged punches at a wild news conference Tuesday afternoon to promote their pay-per-view fight for the undisputed super middleweight championship Nov. 6 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The fighters were exchanging trash talk nose to nose after they were introduced when Alvarez, apparently offended when Plant called the Mexican star a motherf—–, pushed the American fighter across the raised platform at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif.

Alvarez returned the insult as Plant walked toward him. Then, when Plant was in punching distance, he unloaded a left to the head that Alvarez avoided by leaning backward. Alvarez countered with right to the head that connected.

At that moment, security personnel and the handlers of both fighters rushed to get between them and prevent the situation from escalating. Afterward, Plant, who evidently suffered a cut below his right eye, dabbed his face with a cloth until the fighters finally sat at the dais the news conference continued.

The heat between the fighters didn’t end there, though. They went back and forth verbally from across the platform even when others were speaking, including Plant repeatedly calling Alvarez a drug cheat because he tested positive for a banned substance in 2018.

Plant was asked what prompted the fighters to take the trash talk to the next level.

“First off, all we was doing was staring at each other,” he said. “He had something to say, I had something to say. He’s going to beat me, I’m going to beat him. And then, you know, he did what he did.

“So you have to ask him that question.”

Said Canelo: “He can say whatever he wants to me but not to my mom because I’m going to f— [up] anybody who says something about my mom. … And he swing first. I just pushed him, but he swing first. And then I do what I do.”

Plant said he has always surprised his doubters and will do so again in the fight of his life. Alvarez predicted a knockout within eight rounds, saying “You’re not on my level. You’ll see on Nov. 6.

Alvarez (56-1-2, 38 KOs) holds the WBA, WBC and WBO 168-pound titles. Plant (21-0, 12 KOs) is the IBF champion.

The winner will be the first to be the undisputed super middleweight champion.

Video: Canelo Alvarez vs. Caleb Plant: Is underdog overconfident?

Caleb Plant gives himself a good chance of beating Canelo Alvarez on Nov. 6 in Las Vegas. A very good chance.

The IBF super middleweight titleholder, who will attempt to take Alvarez’s three belts and become undisputed champion, told reporters before the Manny Pacquiao-Yordenis Ugas fight on Saturday that many might be shocked when he takes on the biggest star in the sport.

“Don’t be surprised if it’s easier than y’all think,” he said.

Is he dreaming? Hosts Akin Reyes and Barak Bess of The DAZN Boxing Show give their thoughts on Plant’s provocative comment in the video below. Check it out.
