View the Broncos’ (official and unofficial) all-time leaders in sacks

Von Miller ranks No. 1 on the Broncos’ all-time sack list, followed by Simon Fletcher and Karl Mecklenburg.

Von Miller ranks No. 1 on the Broncos’ all-time sack list, followed by Simon Fletcher and Karl Mecklenburg.

The NFL did not begin officially tracking stats until 1982, so several players who played before that date are much lower on the team’s official all-time sack list than they should be.

Unofficially, Rulon Jones totaled 73.5 sacks in his career. Officially, he recorded 52.2 sacks that were tracked by the NFL. His official rank is only one spot lower than his official rank on Denver’s all-time list, but other players have more significant discrepancies.

Barney Chavous, for example, officially ranks 10th with 23 sacks. But if you include his pre-1982 totals, his 75 sacks would rank fourth.

We have listed the official top 10 leaders in sacks below, followed by six more players who would rank within the top 15 if pre-1982 sacks were official. All sack totals prior to 1982 were provided courtesy of pro-football-reference.com. Now, let’s get to the list!

Von Miller can break into top 10 on NFL’s all-time sack list this season

Bills pass rusher Von Miller is 15 sacks away from moving into the top 10 on the NFL’s all-time sack list.

Von Miller already ranks No. 1 on the Denver Broncos’ all-time sack list (110.5). Now he’s climbing the NFL’s all-time list.

Miller, who now plays for the Buffalo Bills, currently ranks 19th overall on the league’s all-time list with 123.5. Five sacks this season would bump him up to No. 16. Ten sacks would bump him to No. 13. Miller will need 15 sacks this year to jump Richard Dent (137.5) and rank in the top 10 on the NFL’s all-time sack list.

A 15-sack season would give Miller 138.5 in his career. That would tie him with former teammate DeMarcus Ware for ninth place on the all-time list. So, how feasible is a 15-sack season for a 34-year-old pass rusher?

Including the postseason, Miller totaled nine sacks in 12 games with the Los Angeles Rams in 2021 (that was after he started the year with 4.5 sacks in seven games with the Broncos that year). The NFL’s all-time list only includes regular-season sacks, but Miller is not far removed from a 13.5-sack campaign.

Miller recorded eight sacks in 11 games with the Bills last year before tearing his ACL. If he returns to the pre-injury form and pace that he had in Buffalo, Miller would be poised to have a 12-sack season in 2023.

So cracking the top-10 list might be a lofty goal for this season, but it’s definitely within reach for Miller over the next two years. Miller is already tied for first place on the NFL’s all-time Super Bowl sack list (4.5).

Miller also has Super Bowl rings from his time with the Broncos and Rams. If he reaches a third Super Bowl with the Bills, Miller would need just a half-sack to stand alone at No. 1 on the all-time Super Bowl sack list.

Von Miller leaves Denver as Broncos’ all-time leader in sacks

Von Miller’s 110.5 sacks rank No. 1 in Broncos history.

Von Miller’s time with the Denver Broncos is coming to an end, but his legacy won’t ever be forgotten.

In nine and a half seasons in Denver (142 games), Miller totaled 509 tackles (including 142 tackles for losses), 225 quarterback hits, 110.5 sacks, 26 forced fumbles, 21 pass breakups, nine fumble recoveries, two interceptions and one defensive touchdown.

He earned Defensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2011 after being selected by the Broncos with the second overall pick in the draft following a standout college career at Texas A&M. That was the first of many pro awards for Miller.

The edge defender went on to earn eight Pro Bowl selections, seven AP All-Pro honors, one Butkus Award, Unanimous NFL 2010s All-Decade Team honors and Super Bowl 50 Most Valuable Player recognition.

Including the playoffs, Miller recorded 117 sacks in 149 games. His 110.5 regular season sacks are the most by any NFL player since Miller entered the league in 2011. The closest active player to Miller on Denver’s all-time list is Bradley Chubb, who ranks No. 26 with 20.5 career sacks.

Miller might be leaving, but his records remain, and they’ll likely remain unchallenged for a very, very long time.

Broncos OLB Von Miller now ranks 23rd on NFL’s all-time sack list

Von Miller needs 28 more sacks to join former teammate DeMarcus Ware in the Top 10 on the NFL’s all-time sack list.

Denver Broncos outside linebacker Von Miller has recorded at least one sack in each of the team’s first three games as he continues to climb the NFL’s all-time sack list.

Miller’s four sacks this season are tied for second-most in the AFC and his 110 career sacks now rank 23rd on the all-time list. He passed Greg Townsend (109.5) during Sunday’s 26-0 win over the New York Jets.

Miller leads all active players in career sacks and he leads all defenders this season with six tackles behind the line of scrimmage. It’s clear that the 32-year-old edge defender has fully recovered from the ankle injury that sidelined him last season.

“I think he’s picked up where I thought he would have been last year,” Broncos coach Vic Fangio said Sunday. “It [the injury] was very, very disappointing on lot of fronts — not just that he couldn’t play for us last year — but I really felt he was primed to have a hell of a season last year. About the only lucky thing with his injury is that it was one that once it’s healed — it’s healed.

“It needed five months, so it took him out for the whole season, but he didn’t have lingering effects from it. He’s focused and he knows that I see a more mature player, a guy that is really wanting to play football, and enjoying it.”

Miller needs 13 more sacks to crack the Top 20 on the all-time list and he needs 28 more sacks to join former teammate DeMarcus Ware in the Top 10. If he continues his current career rate of 0.797 sacks per game, Miller will finish the 2021 season with 15 sacks. That would give him 121 career sacks, just shy of 21st (121.5) and 20th (122) on the all-time list.
