Jayson Tatum flops at 3-point shootout, but wins All-Star MVP on the way to setting scoring record

In sum, it was an outstanding weekend on one of the NBA’s biggest stages for the St. Louis native.

While his early exit from the NBA’s 2023 All-Star 3-point shootout was not exactly auspicious, star Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum put together an impressive performance in the 2023 All-Star Game, winning the annual exhibition contest’s Most Valuable Player award, which is named after his friend and mentor Kobe Bryant.

The St. Louis native set the all-time scoring record for the All-Star Game, hanging a jaw-dropping 55 points on Team LeBron to elevate Team Giannis to its first All-Star Game win.

The folks over at the official Bleacher Report YouTube channel captured Tatum being honored with the MVP award:

NBA All-Star Game: Warriors’ Steph Curry named MVP after 50 point performance

After a sizzling 50 point performance during Team LeBron’s win in Cleveland, Warriors guard Steph Curry was named 2022 NBA All-Star Game MVP.

After Steph Curry capped his 2022 All-Star Game performance in Cleveland, the NBA didn’t have a tough decision to make when it came down to the contest’s Most Valuable Player.

Following Team LeBron’s victory over Team Durant, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver named the Golden State Warriors point guard the 2022 All-Star Game MVP.

Curry became the first player to be presented with the brand new Kobe Bryant Most Valuable Player trophy. The newly designed trophy in honor of Bryant debuted this year in Cleveland.

Curry finished the 2022 All-Star Game with a game-high 50 points on 17-of-30 shooting from the field with five boards, two assists, two blocks and a steal in 36 minutes. On the way to 50 points, Curry shattered the record for most made 3-pointers in a single All-Star Game with a red-hot 16 triples on Sunday.

Curry fell only two points shy of matching Anthony Davis’ All-Star single-game scoring record of 52 from 2017.

The 33-year-old guard became the fifth member of the Warriors to win All-Star Game MVP and the first since Kevin Durant in 2019. Prior to Durant’s All-Star MVP performance, Rick Barry was the last member of the Warriors to win the award in 1967.

During his career at All-Star weekend, Curry has now recorded wins at the 3-Point Shooting Contest and the Skills Competition, along with his All-Star Game MVP award.

NBA renames All-Star game MVP award after Kobe Bryant

This is a perfect move by the NBA. Good on them for making it happen.

After Kobe Bryant’s tragic passing late last month, you knew the NBA was going to find a bunch of ways to pay tribute to the hoops legend one way or another.

They’ve found multiple ways already. Some players have decided to personally retire their numbers. The NBA All-Star game’s actual rules and Elam ending to 24 points are also a tribute to the Laker great. The players will even wear his and his daughter, Gianna Bryant’s, numbers during the the game.

But the biggest gesture of all might be the league announcing that the All-Star game’s MVP trophy is being renamed the Kobe Bryant MVP award.

The player who wins MVP after Sunday night’s game will be named the league’s first ever Kobe Bryant All-Star game MVP.

This makes too much sense. Bryant’s four All-Star MVP awards are the most ever in NBA history. When he retired, he was the game’s leading scorer but has since been passed by LeBron James.

This is a slam dunk. This was just always the right move. Good on the NBA for realizing it and acting fast on it.
