Suni Lee named SEC Gymnast of the Week

She is simply the best gymnast in the world.

Auburn’s Suni Lee was named the SEC Gymnast of the Week after her stellar performance against Georgia.

Lee led Auburn to their second-ever victory in Athens. She swept the event titles and won the all-around with a score of 39.775. She has competed in the all-around four times this season and won every one.

It was the first time an Auburn gymnast has swept the events since Caitlin Atkinson did so on March 11, 2016.

She opened the night with a 9.925 on bars, winning her sixth straight bars competition, before moving to the vault where she unveiled her new vault, the half-on front layout, which has never been done in NCAA gymnastics

She nailed it, earning a 9.925 and winning her first vault crown. She followed that up with a 9.95 on the floor, tieing her career-high.

To end her performances, she tied her career-best on beam with a 9.975. It was her third time winning beam this season.

Auburn will return to action Friday night when they host Kentucky in Auburn Arena. The meet will start at  6:30 p.m. CT and will be on the SEC Network.

Suni Lee and Auburn gymnastics keep breaking records.

Suni Lee had another dominant performance Friday night to lead No. 7 Auburn to the program’s second-ever win at Georgia.

Lee won all four events and earned her fourth straight all-around title. She began her night with a stunning performance on bars before debuting her new vault, which has never been done in NCAA gymnastics. She nailed her half-on front layout, earning a 9.925.

She followed up that performance with an impressive floor routine, scoring a career-high 9.95. she ended her historic night with a stellar performance on beam.

Auburn needed every one of her points, as they had their lowest score since the season opener but still picked up the win thanks to Lee’s superstar performance and Sophia Groth’s clutch all-around debut led Auburn to a 197.175-196.300 win.

It was the first time an Auburn gymnast won all four events since Caitlin Atkinson in 2016.

“I knew I wanted to come to Auburn to make history and give all the other girls an opportunity to be great, too,” said Lee. “It feels really good to do that.”

She scored a 9.925 on bars and closed her night with a 9.975 to score a 39.775 and the all-around title.

Groth also shined for Auburn. The freshman scored a 39.425 in her all-around debut. She tied her career-high with a 9.95 to help seal the win for Auburn.

“I know we’re really good when we’re clicking,” head coach Jeff Graba said. “I want to know how good we’ll be if we get into a struggle. I think it says that our team is better and is growing tonight. You go on the road, you’ve got to grind it out and you’ve got to win some of these. For this young group to do it with some struggles, they better take some confidence from that.”

Suni Lee won her all-around debut to lead Auburn to a win over rival Alabama on Friday.

On Tuesday she won another honor, SEC Freshman of the Week.

Auburn’s star freshman and reigning Olympic all-around gold medalist, won the title with a 39.700. That score is the second highest in the SEC this season and third highest all-around score in program history.

She also tied for first on beam with a career-high 9.975, earning a 10 from one of the judges. She made her vault debut, posting a 9.875 after working on the routine for just a few days. She added a 9.925 on bars and finished with a 9.925 on her floor routine as Auburn beat Alabama 197.525-197.125 in a sold-out Auburn Arena.
