Former Browns OC Alex Van Pelt set to interview with Raiders

The former Cleveland OC is interviewing for another gig.

After the Cleveland Browns fired him, Alex Van Pelt might get his second crack at an offensive coordinator gig with the Las Vegas Raiders.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Raiders will sit down with Van Pelt this week to discuss their opening as offensive coordinator. With Antonio Pierce locking down the full-time head coaching gig, he will be looking for a play-caller. This is not a role Van Pelt has ever taken over, so if he got this job he would get his first crack at it.

Pierce has not filled his staff yet, and after the Raiders just hired former general manager of the Los Angeles Chargers, Tom Telesco, to the same role, they could be looking to move fast. After four years in Cleveland, could Van Pelt be set to journey out west?

Best of luck to Van Pelt as he takes on this interview in Las Vegas.

Raiders OC interview tracker

Raiders OC interview tracker

Things have heated up for the Raiders in their search for their next offensive coordinator. Including Browns offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt who will interview with the team this week according to NFL media’s Tom Pelissero.

Van Pelt has been the offensive coordinator in Cleveland the past four seasons. Prior to that he was the QB coach in Cincinnati and Green Bay before that.

There has been additional coaches scheduled since the Van Pelt news.

Here is the full list of Raiders reported offensive coordinator interviews so far:

Rams passing coordinator Zac Robinson (report) UPDATE: Robinson hired as Falcons OC

Bengals QB coach Dan Pitcher (report) UPDATE: Pitcher hired as Bengals OC

Bears former OC Luke Getsy (report) UPDATE: Nearing deal to become Raiders OC (report)

Browns OC Alex Van Pelt UPDATE: Van Pelt hired as Patriots OC

Steelers QB coach Mike Sullivan (report)

Buccaneers QB coach Thad Lewis (report)

USC OC Kliff Kingsbury (report) UPDATE: Kingsbury is expected to be named Raiders OC. UPDATE 2.0: Kingsbury withdraws his name from consideration.

49ers Passing game specialist Klint Kubiac (report)

UCLA head coach Chip Kelly (report)

Antonio Pierce’s first priority as recently named head coach will be landing a solid offensive coordinator. So, this process is of utmost importance.

Presumably the team would like to get a GM in place as well, perhaps even in time to be in the room for these interviews. If so, they’d have to make their decision quickly because these coach candidates are on the schedule for this week.

Browns offensive coordinator tracker: Staying up to date as team searches for Alex Van Pelt replacement

The Browns are looking for a new offensive coordinator after firing Alex Van Pelt. Here is an up-to-date tracker of the process.

The Cleveland Browns are in the hunt for a new offensive coordinator after firing Alex Van Pelt after four years.

The offense in Cleveland was not pretty this season. They had no run game after the injury of star running back Nick Chubb, they were at the top of the league in turnovers, and could not find any sort of sustained success this season with five different quarterbacks.

The need to revamp the run game more than likely sits at the top of the priority list when looking for a new offensive coordinator. They have also not gotten the most out of quarterback Deshaun Watson since he arrived in the Spring of 2022. How to get the most out of their quarterback they have committed $230 million to also must be a priority of the new offensive coordinator.

Stay up to date with every interview request, completed interview, and anything that pertains to the job here with this offensive coordinator tracker!

Browns interview Seahawks OL coach Andy Dickerson for open OC post

The Browns have their first interview for their OC opening.

The Cleveland Browns are interviewing Andy Dickerson, the offensive line coach of the Seattle Seahawks, for their open offensive coordinator post to replace Alex Van Pelt.

This is the first interview the Browns have completed as they look for a replacement for Van Pelt. After the Seahawks have moved on from Pete Carroll, they allow their coaches to interview elsewhere this offseason.

Overhauling the run game is a massive point of emphasis for the Browns this offseason, moving on from running backs coach Stump Mitchell as well. Dickerson was the run game coordinator for the Seahawks in 2021 before being promoted to offensive line coach.

In 2021, the Seahawks were second in the NFL in Expected Points Added on the ground.

Do not look for this to be a short process as head coach Kevin Stefanski and the Browns will continue to turn over every stone. This is just the beginning as the Browns continue to look to improve their offense.

Alex Van Pelt confirms he is out as Browns’ offensive coordinator

The Browns are officially on the search for a new offensive coordinator.

After speculation earlier this morning, Alex Van Pelt has confirmed he is out as the offensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns.

After four seasons with the team, Van Pelt is on to new pastures as the Browns look to revamp their offense this offseason. Following a season where the Browns could not run the ball after the injury to Nick Chubb, and finished near the bottom of the league in Expected Points Added per play, these changes are a refreshing new pace for head coach Kevin Stefanski to take.

Van Pelt told Jake Trotter of ESPN:

“On to the next one. Proud of my time here.”

After four years of a stale staff outside of Drew Petzing being hired away by the Arizona Cardinals, Stefanski is looking for fresher eyes as he looks to revamp the offensive side of the football.

The Browns will now begin their search for a new offensive coordinator, running backs coach, and tight ends coach.

Browns fire two offensive staffers; status of OC Alex Van Pelt uncertain

Offensive overhaul is beginning at the coaching level.

The Cleveland Browns have begun their offseason improvements by firing multiple offensive staffers, potentially including offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt.

What an early-morning news dump from the Browns as they are shaking up their offensive staff after a down season on that side of the football. The confirmed firings are running backs coach Stump Mitchell and tight ends coach T.C. McCartney.

There are, however, conflicting reports about the status of Van Pelt. Insider Josina Anderson has reported that Van Pelt has been fired and has stated his goodbyes to the players, while NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport has reported that the offensive coordinator is still under contract.

For an underperforming offensive unit that did not see growth from its young running backs after the injury to Nick Chubb, and that is in desperate need of fresh ideas, Stefanski is making the right move to infuse new perspectives into his offense.

Can the ‘elite arm’ of Joe Flacco make the difference for the Browns?

Cleveland’s OC likes what he sees from Joe Flacco

With rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson sitting out Thursday’s practice as he remains in concussion protocol, it is highly likely Joe Flacco starts on Sunday as the Cleveland Browns take on the Los Angeles Rams. Talking about the probable fourth starter of the year, offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt spoke about Flacco during media availability on Thursday.

He said that he believes that Flacco still has plenty in the tank and that he believes that the arm is still elite. Flacco could help the Browns open up the vertical passing game as he has always had one of the league’s strongest arms dating back to his days with the rival Ravens.

Kevin Stefanski has led his team to a 7-4 record this year using three different quarterbacks and a probable fourth this week. He has his team ready to play each week and will likely have to make another major change to his offense with a different style of quarterback starting Sunday. This could be a real springboard into the playoffs if Cleveland can bounce back on the road.

Browns: OC Alex Van Pelt vouches for the toughness of Deshaun Watson

The quarterback’s toughness is not in question.

The toughness of Deshaun Watson has come into question over the last two weeks as the quarterback of the Cleveland Browns looks likely to miss his second straight game. However, offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt does not want to hear any of it around Watson.

“I would never, ever, ever doubt his toughness, ever… that is not the issue… he’s tough as nails.”

There you have it. In all reality, the injury has turned out to be more severe than initially thought. There is no tin foil conspiracy needed. A Week 6 game against an NFC opponent is not a must-win game or a game that will decide the Browns’ season. If the Browns need this week to get Watson, David Njoku, Ethan Pocic, Joel Bitonio, and Myles Garrett healthy, they can do so.

The Browns have the opportunity to rattle off a series of wins over their last 12 games, eight of which come against AFC opponents. There are more pressing issues later down the line than what is happening in Week 6.

OC Alex Van Pelt will once again take over QB coach duties

Offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt will once again take over QB coaching duties.

The Cleveland Browns have made a couple of offensive moves this evening. First, they have hired veteran offensive mind Bill Musgrave as an offensive assistant. Now, they have also handed the duties of quarterbacks coach back to offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, who held the title in 2021 and 2022 for the Browns.

There is no doubt the Browns need a massive leap out of their quarterback Deshaun Watson if they want to get back into the playoffs in 2023. Van Pelt has held the duties before, but this feels like it may be a missed opportunity to bring fresh eyes into the facility.

Texans should consider these 2 NFL assistants to pair with Alabama QB Bryce Young

The Houston Texans should look at two NFL assistants who are doing good jobs with average quarterbacks as their possible pairing with Bryce Young.

The Houston Texans will be looking for a new quarterback in 2023. Ostensibly it will be Bryce Young from Alabama as the club’s No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft.

The Texans could also be in the market for a new coach at the end of a season with Lovie Smith failing to keep the momentum of completing the rebuild.

The following isn’t a definitive or exhaustive list by any means. After all, San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans would be a fan favorite to return to Houston, even if he weren’t the hottest potential candidate on the market.

If general manager Nick Caserio already has April in mind to take Young, then he needs to consider two offensive coordinators who have elevated average quarterbacks to career best seasons. It would be an all-in on offensive infrastructure.

The first candidate is the Cleveland Browns’ Alex Van Pelt. The 52-year-old has put together an offensive scheme that has allowed quarterback Jacoby Brissett to have his best season of his career. Brisset is on pace to have the highest passer rating of his career at 89.1. It also helps that Amari Cooper, considered a cap casualty for the Dallas Cowboys, is on pace to have career highs in receiving.

That is the definition of talent elevation.

Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Shane Waldron has been the architect of an offense that has them in the playoff hunt and defying national expectations in a year they were supposed to tank.

Geno Smith has played the part of a top-15 quarterback this season. The former New York Jets 2013 second-round pick has a career-high 72.8% completion percentage. Through 11 games, the once mistake-prone Smith has just five interceptions to show. Receiver Tyler Lockett also doesn’t look 30 years old as he’s having a renaissance year with 57 catches for 708 yards and six touchdowns.

Whether Waldron or Van Pelt, if Houston is going to go with a quarterback in the draft, Caserio needs a coaching staff that can help to transition their entry into the league.

Good offensive coaching will elevate the rookie, help running back Dameon Pierce, and mask offensive line deficiencies.
