Oklahoma City Thunder guard Theo Maledon has once again put his name alongside other rookies in the franchise record books.
In the 123-120 loss to the Phoenix Suns on Sunday, Maledon broke the organization’s rookie record for most 3-pointers made in a season.
Maledon hit his 94th, 95th and 96th shot from deep in the game, surpassing Alex Abrines’ mark of 94 that he set in 2016-17.
“It’s definitely humbling,” Maledon said. “Really blessed to be able to achieve that. But I think what matters most to me is winning, and that’s not what we did tonight, and so it’s not something that I’m really thinking about.”
Maledon has been impressive in his rookie season. The second-round draft pick is averaging 10.1 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game and shooting 34.5% from deep.
He has already established himself as a player who can serve a role on a future, better Thunder team.
This isn’t the first notable rookie statistic Maledon has posted.
Exactly a month ago, in a game also against the Suns, Maledon scored 33 points. In doing so, he joined Russell Westbrook as the only two rookies in Thunder history to reach 30 points. Westbrook did this six times in his first season in the league.
In that same April 2 game against the Suns, Maledon and fellow 19-year-old rookie Aleksej Pokusevski became the first pair of teammates in league history who are younger than 20 years old to reach 20 points in the same game.
Five days later, Maledon and Pokusevski both reached 25 points, the first rookie teammates to do so since Kyrie Irving and Tristan Thompson in 2012.
The Thunder have struggled to win games this season, particularly over the last month, but there has continued to be impressive play from young players.
And Maledon has seven more games to extend that 3-point lead over Abrines.
