Emily Ducote vs. Alesha Zappitella strawweight title fight headlines Invicta FC 47 on May 11

Emily Ducote will look to stop Alesha Zappitella from claiming a title in a second division when they meet in the Invicta FC 47 headliner.

Strawweight gold will be on the line at the next Invicta FC event as champion [autotag]Emily Ducote[/autotag] will meet challenger [autotag]Alesha Zappitella[/autotag] in the main event.

The promotion announced on Tuesday that Invicta FC 47 is scheduled for May 11, with Ducote (10-6) vs. Zappitella (9-3) serving as the headlining act. A location and venue have not been revealed.

Ducote, 28, will attempt to make her first title defense after claiming gold in spectacular fashion at Invicta FC 44 in August. The Bellator veteran is 4-1 over her past five, with her title-winning head kick of Danielle Taylor ranking among the best knockouts of the year in 2021.

Zappitella, 27, meanwhile, tries to make history by moving up in weight to challenge Ducote. The former Invicta FC atomweight champion lost the belt to Jessica Delboni in January after one title defense, and has now opted to shift divisions and chase a second championship with the promotion.

The latest Invicta FC 47 lineup includes:

  • Emily Ducote vs. Alesha Zappitella – for strawweight title
  • Chelsea Chandler vs. Courtney King
  • Jillian DeCoursey vs. Lindsey VanZandt
  • Serena DeJesus vs. Lisa Verzosa
  • Janaisa Morandin vs. Liana Pirosin

Invicta FC 45 results: Jessica Delboni wins atomweight title, dominates Alesha Zappitella in rematch

Jessica Delboni dethrones atomweight champion Alesha Zappitella in the rematch at Wednesday’s Invicta FC 45.

[autotag]Jessica Delboni[/autotag] is Invicta FC champion.

The atomweight fighter took the 105-pound title from [autotag]Alesha Zappitella[/autotag], outpointing her in a unanimous decision in the main event of Invicta FC 45. Delboni (12-3) defeated Zappitella (9-3) 50-45, 50-45, and 49-46 on the judges’ scorecards.

The rematch stemmed from a championship bout back at Invicta on AXS TV in May 2021. Then champ Zappitella defended her atomweight title for the first time, edging out Delboni in a narrow split decision.

Delboni rebounded from that defeat to win the atomweight tournament this past June at Invicta FC: Phoenix Series 4 to reestablish herself as the No. 1 contender and set up the rematch with Zappitella.

Invicta FC 45 took place on Wednesday night at the Police Athletic League in Kansas City, Kan. The entire card was streamed on MMA Junkie’s YouTube channel.

In the first round, Zappitella got an early takedown and was able to control a portion of the action. Delboni was tough and made Zappitella work, as she constantly was scrambling and looking for reversals. The Brazilian was able to get back on her feet and land a few. The two went back and forth on the feet and ground, but Delboni seemed to do the most damage. Delboni won the round 10-9 on two of the judges’ scorecards and lost a 9-10 on the third.

The second, third, fourth, and fifth rounds were all Delboni.

She stopped the majority of the takedown attempts by the champion and landed solid shots on the feet. Zappitella looked to get an edge, and admirably kept fighting, but Delboni was successful in shutting down her game. Delboni tagged Zappitella with a mix of shots, attacking the heavily with leg kicks and significant elbows to the head when stuffing takedowns.

With this result, Delboni is now on a four-fight winning streak since bouncing back from the Zappitella loss. Meanwhile, Zappitella saw her four-fight unbeaten run come to an end along with her reign as Invicta FC champion.

Below are the updated results for Invicta FC 45:

  • Jessica Delboni def. Alesha Zappitella via unanimous decision (50-45, 50-45, 49-46) – for atomweight title
  • Ramona Pascual def. Shamir Peshewa via TKO (strikes) – Round 1, 1:00
  • Hailey Cowan vs. Monica Franco via submission (rear-naked choke) – Round 2, 3:17

  • Katie Saull def. Tamika Jones via submission (armbar) – Round 1, 4:30

Alesha Zappitella’s goals include becoming Invicta FC’s first double-champion

Alesha Zappitella’s goals go far beyond defending her atomweight title at Invicta on AXS TV.

[autotag]Alesha Zappitella[/autotag]’s goals go far beyond defending her title on Friday.

Zappitella (8-2-1), who claimed the Invicta FC atomweight belt with a fourth-round finish of Ashley Cummins this past September, is set for her first title defense when she meets Jessica Delboni in the co-main event of Invicta on AXS TV, which takes place at the Police Athletic League in Kansas City, Kan. The two-hour main card will air on AXS TV and Invicta FC’s YouTube channel at 8 p.m. ET.

With the strawweight title currently vacant, Zappitella wants to make history with Invicta FC. Not only that, the 26-year-old is also eyeing another promotion’s titleholder, Rizin FF super atomweight champion Ayaka Hamasaki, as she aims to cement herself as the greatest atomweight in the sport.

“Past this fight, I have a couple of things I want to do,” Zappitella told MMA Junkie Radio. “I want to become the first ever Invicta champ-champ. There’s never been one of them, and the 115-pound belt is vacant, so I would love to fight for the 115-pound belt. The next thing I want to do is I want to prove that I am absolutely the best atomweight in the world. So, with that being said, I want Invicta to fly out Ayaka Hamasaki to come and fight me in my cage.”

Zappitella said that ONE Championship has also expressed interest in having her participate in their upcoming atomweight grand prix, but “Half Pint” says her loyalty lies with Invicta and the promotion’s president, Shannon Knapp. Zappitella likes her growth with the company and thinks it’s the perfect home for her career.

“I was actually contacted by ONE to be in the grand prix, but if I’m being completely honest, Shannon cares about me,” Zappitella said. “She cares about all of her fighters, and I completely believe in absolutely everything that Invicta is doing, and I think that Invicta is the place to be if you’re a woman – especially a 105er.

“I want to get famous in America so being signed to ONE really didn’t seem like the smartest decision for me. I’m going to ride it out, and I’m going to just build my legacy in Invicta and then go on to work for Invicta afterwards. I want to be an interviewer, a broadcaster, a commentator, so I really think Invicta is the place that I can do it.”

Invicta FC’s AXS TV debut set for May 21 with two title fights

Invicta FC will kick off its new era on AXS TV with new owners Anthem Sports and Entertainment with a pair of title fights next month.

Invicta FC will kick off its new era on AXS TV with new owners Anthem Sports and Entertainment with a pair of title fights next month.

Invicta on AXS TV is set for May 21, a Friday, an Invicta official told MMA Junkie on Tuesday. The card will take place at the Police Athletic League in Kansas City, Kan. The two-hour main card will air on AXS TV at 8 p.m. ET. In addition, the full seven-fight card, including the two title fights, will be available as free streams on Invicta’s social media platforms.

In the main event, [autotag]Karina Rodriguez[/autotag] (8-4) will meet [autotag]Daiana Torquato[/autotag] (10-3) for the strawweight title vacated by Vanessa Porto when she signed with Bellator.

The co-feature also will be a title fight. Atomweight champion [autotag]Alesha Zappitella[/autotag] (8-2) will put her 105-pound title on the line for the first time when she takes on [autotag]Jessica Delboni[/autotag] (10-2).

Rodriguez, from Mexico, hasn’t fought since a November 2011 unanimous decision loss to Porto in the Invicta FC 38 co-main event. Prior to that, she had back-to-back decision wins in 2019 against Milana Dudieva and DeAnna Bennett.

Torquato, from Brazil, first fought for Invicta at the promotion’s one-night tournament at Phoenix Series 2 in September 2019. After a split decision win over Dudieva in her opening bout, she was submitted by Bennett in her second fight. Those bouts were exhibitions and not counted on her record, though, which technically gives her a six-fight winning streak heading into the title fight.

Zappitella went 3-0 in 2020, despite the trials the year brought to the MMA world. After back-to-back decision losses in 2019 to Viviane Pereira at Invicta FC 35 and Kanna Asakura at RIZIN 18, she took decisions from Kelly D’Angelo and Lindsey VanZAndt in 2020, then submitted Ashley Cummins in the fourth round this past September to win the vacant atomweight title.

Brazil’s Delboni has won three of her past four, including a decision over Herica Tiburcio at Invicta FC 42 this past September. That got her back in the win columnn after a TKO loss to Julia Polastri at a Shooto event in Brazil 11 months prior.

Additional fights for Invicta’s AXS TV debut are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

Invicta FC 42 results: Alesha Zappitella submits Ashley Cummins, claims atomweight belt

The first Von Flue finish in Invicta history made Alesha Zappitella atomweight champion.

Not only was Thursday night [autotag]Alesha Zappitella[/autotag]’s night of destiny, but she created a little bit of history along the way, too.

Zappitella (8-2) and veteran [autotag]Ashley Cummins[/autotag] squared off in an entertaining scrap for the vacant atomweight belt in the main event of Invicta FC 42 in Kansas City, Kan.

The back-and-forth fight went into the championship rounds before Zappitella brought home the gold. She submitted Cummins (7-6) at the 1:20 mark via Von Flue choke to become 105-pound champion — the first Von Flue finish in Invicta history.

“Honestly everything feels so surreal, this is a fight I’ve been asking for this fight for so long, and it’s here,” Zappitella said after the fight.

[lawrence-related id=553192,553055]

Cummins is as synonymous with Invicta as any fighter: She’s been with the company since Invicta FC 1, and was competing in her 10th bout in the promotion. She came out looking like a woman on a mission over the first two rounds, absolutely rocking Zappitella with a shot in the first and generally being the more active fighter.

I felt like Ashley was going to want this so bad, she was going to come out guns blazing and I thought I’d have to feel it out,” Zappitella said.

Indeed, by the third, Zappitella seemed to have things figured out. She has a strong ground game, and she used a low single to score a smooth takedown early in the third, then landed heavy elbows from top position. It was a precursor to the fourth round, and this time, she finished the job.

With her second career submission win, Zappitella has won three in a row. Cummins has lost two straight bouts, both matchups for the vacant Invicta atomweight title.

Complete Invicta FC 42 results:

  •  Alesha Zappitella def. Ashley Cummins via submission (Von Flue choke) — Round 4, 1:20 (wins vacant Invicta FC atomweight title)
  • Lisa Verzosa (134.5) vs. Raquel Canuto (135.6)
  • Jessica Delboni def. Herica Tiburcio via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

  • Helen Peralta def. Jennifer Chieng via unanimous decision (30-26, 30-27, 30-27)
