UFC analyst doesn’t care to see Islam Makhachev at 185 pounds

Islam Makhachev wants multi-division championship glory, but one UFC analyst would prefer to see him stick in his own lane.

[autotag]Islam Makhachev[/autotag] wants multi-division UFC championship glory, but analyst [autotag]Alan Jouban[/autotag] would prefer to see him stick in his own lane.

After setting the record for consecutive lightweight title defenses with a first-round submission of Renato Moicano at UFC 311 this month, Makhachev (27-1 MMA, 16-1 UFC) reiterated that he’s not going to leave the sport without a second title.

What that second weight class would be remains to be seen, but with a lack of desire to face current welterweight champ Belal Muhammad, Makhachev said he would accept a chance to face middleweight kingpin Dricus Du Plessis if it was offered.

Over the past decade, reigning champions pursuing additional divisional titles has become commonplace. Some have successfully pulled it off, while others have failed. There seems to be a perception that capturing belts in multiple weight classes is the ultimate legacy-enhancer, but for UFC and ESPN analyst Jouban, it doesn’t exceed the value of being a dominant and long-reigning titleholder.

“I don’t need to see it,” Jouban told MMA Junkie of Makhachev competing at middleweight. “I like to see guys at their weight do dominant things and set records. That’s when we talk about greatness. Do I take it seriously? Yeah. I take it seriously. I think he actually feels that’s what he wants to do. Has he earned it? Yeah. He set the record with four title defenses.

“Obviously if Islam goes up to 185, he wants to win, but if he doesn’t win he can say, ‘So what? I’m still the lightweight champion. I still have the belt so I’ve got nothing to lose.’ That’s why I don’t like these double champs. It’s one thing if he goes up to 170, but to go up two weight classes is unreasonable. He’s got nothing to lose. I need to have something at stake in these fights. And there’s nothing at stake if he goes and loses and comes back down and defends his belt and is putting the division on hold.”

Although Makhachev, No. 3 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie pound-for-pound rankings, has separated himself as the most decorated champ in 155-pound history, Jouban doesn’t feel he’s cleared the list of contenders to the point where moving up in weight is the only option.

Makhachev was supposed to rematch Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 311 before the challenger pulled out on weigh-in day due to a back issue. UFC CEO Dana White said in the aftermath of the event that Tsarukyan will have to win at least one more fight to re-earn the opportunity for a crack at gold, but if Jouban was able to make the call, he thinks that fight remains as the biggest threat to Makhachev’s historic reign.

“Arman is the guy, in my case, that sets him apart from Khabib (as the lightweight GOAT),” Jouban said. “That’s what sets the record. That’s the one guy in the division where there’s the question mark of, ‘Can you beat this guy? Can you beat a guy that’s equivalent to you in the grappling?’ That can change things.”

“I think he’s going to be champion for a while. The toughest test that the division has against him I believe, as much as I love Charles Oliveira, I just don’t think his grappling is as strong as Islam’s. I hope he stays in the division, though. I hope he stays in the division and sets record. We’re talking about him going up, what’s he going to do? He’s not going to fight Belal (Muhammad at welterweight), so he’s going to skip to 185? I don’t want to see that.”

Check out the video above as Jouban and MMA Junkie senior reporter Mike Bohn discuss Makhachev’s place among the greatest lightweight champs in history on “The Bohnfire” podcast.

Alan Jouban: If he retires tomorrow, UFC champion Alex Pereira is already a Hall of Famer

Alan Jouban thinks UFC light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira has already cemented his legacy.

[autotag]Alan Jouban[/autotag] thinks UFC light heavyweight champion [autotag]Alex Pereira[/autotag] has already cemented his legacy.

Pereira had a banner 2024, scoring knockouts of Jamahal Hill, Jiri Prochazka, and Khalil Rountree in a six-month period in title fights. In just 10 fights in the octagon, “Poatan” has already captured UFC titles in two divisions.

UFC analyst and former fighter Jouban thinks Pereira (12-2 MMA, 9-1 UFC) has achieved enough to earn a place in the UFC Hall of Fame.

“If he retires tomorrow, nobody in the history of the UFC has done what he has done in such a short amount of time,” Jouban said on MMA on SiriusXM. “Look at what he has done. It’s unprecedented, so I would say yes.”

Jouban explains what makes Pereira so special.

“Not only is he a guy that has this mystique, that has this following of kids and people of all ages, and has carried the UFC on his back, but the one thing that he does better than anybody else in the UFC is that he puts a bow on it and he finishes fights,” Jouban said. “You put Alex Pereira in the main event slot on any card, any time of the year, people are going to leave there with a smile on their face because they got to see a knockout.

“They got to see a devastating knockout early. You don’t have that trust in a lot of other fighters. If they have a draw, a big name, you can’t guarantee that with a Khabib (Nurmagomedov) or Islam (Makhachev) or some other type of fighter. But you know with Alex Pereira is in there, somebody’s going to get knocked out and it’s all that we’re going to be talking about the next day.”

Michael Chiesa makes case for Belal Muhammad against ‘boogeyman’ Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 310

UFC analysts Michael Chiesa and Alan Jouban previewed Belal Muhammad vs. Shavkat Rakhmonov.

UFC analysts [autotag]Michael Chiesa[/autotag] and [autotag]Alan Jouban[/autotag] previewed [autotag]Belal Muhammad[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Shavkat Rakhmonov[/autotag].

Welterweight champion Muhammad (24-3 MMA, 15-3 UFC) makes his first title defense against undefeated Rakhmonov (18-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) in the UFC 310 main event on Dec. 7 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN2, ESPN+).

Chiesa, who faces Max Griffin on the same night, thinks Muhammad’s resume cannot be discounted. While he’s not necessarily picking him to win, he wouldn’t be surprised if Muhammad bounced Rakhmonov out of the ranks of the unbeaten.

“It would be easy for people to discredit and dismiss Belal because when you look at Shavkat Rakhmonov, 18-0 with 10 submissions and 8 KOs, (he’s) the boogeyman of the division right now,” Chiesa told ESPN. “But you look at Belal’s strength of schedule in his last six fights: Demian Maia, who was ranked when he fought him; (Stephen) ‘Wonderboy’ (Thompson), who was ranked above the top 10; Vicente Luque, who was ranked (No.) 5 when he fought him.

“Sean Brady TKO’d him, took his 0; fought Gilbert Burns on short notice in a five-round fight, beat him; and then dethrones Leon Edwards in his own backyard. Before people want to dismiss Belal Muhammad because of who he is fighting, you just look at that strength of schedule and you’ve got to remind yourself: This guy is the champion for a reason, and I would not be surprised if he took Shavkat’s 0.”

Jouban, who spoiled Muhammad’s UFC debut in a Fight of the Night battle in 2016, thinks the champion has the skills to beat well-rounded Rakhmonov.

“Belal has proven time and time again why he deserved the championship fight, he got the championship fight, and he deserves to be the champion now,” Jouban said. “He looked phenomenal against Leon Edwards. Leon Edwards is one of the better grapplers in the division. He has outgrappled guys like Gunnar Nelson and so on.

“And Belal Muhammad goes in there, dumps him on his head numerous times, outwrestled him, manhandled him. Shavkat Rakhmonov though, this guy does everything well, and so this is going to be, I think, Belal’s toughest date. But I do think that Belal does have the grappling to get it done.”
