Alabama vs LSU Game Preview

Why Alabama Will Win

That’s how you bounce back.

Alabama was a little big sluggish – to be nice about it – in a clunker of a 93-69 loss at Oklahoma, and followed it up with a 101-44 win over Vanderbilt the offense clicking perfectly.

What was the biggest difference? The Oklahoma offense hit everything – including from the outside – but Alabama is normally a killer at stopping teams from hitting the three.

LSU is on a nine game losing streak, partially because it has gone dead cold from three, but …

Why LSU Will Win

Let’s just say the Tigers are due.

No, they haven’t been great from three, but it’s the defense that’s having the biggest problem. It’s not stopping anyone, and it’s not going to slow down the Alabama attack. However, LSU is good when it’s able to manufacture ways to score.

It’s 8-1 when scoring 72 points or more and 12-4 when scoring more than 59 points. Alabama might be able to rock on D, but it only allowed fewer than 60 points five times.

However …

What’s Going To Happen

To beat Alabama you have to get to 82 points – Alabama is 17-0 when it allows fewer – and LSU doesn’t have the firepower to make that happen.

It’s been way too much of a struggle for the Tigers. They’re going to try to slow this down, but they won’t be able to hit from the outside consistently enough to make something happen against a Bama team that will go on one big run to put this well out of reach.

Alabama vs LSU Game Preview

Why Alabama Will Win

Even with the easy win over Mississippi State, this looked like a team that desperately needed to take a deep breath.

It was a rocky first two months of the season, but now it’s Game On with showdowns against LSU and Ole Miss before dealing with Austin Peay and Auburn at home. First. the Crimson Tide have to get by the Tigers for the 11 time in 12 tries.

It took arguably the greatest team of all-time for LSU – the Joe Burrow 2019 version – to provide a break in the gloom.

This is a decent Tiger team that ripped through Ole Miss and beat Florida to get the O going over the last few games, but there isn’t enough of a pass rush to bother Bryce Young, and the offensive line is about to be in for a long day.

Speaking of a group that should come out rejuvenated, here comes the Alabama pass rush against an LSU line that’s the second-worst in the SEC in sacks allowed.

But …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why LSU Will Win

With all due respect to Mr. Hooker over at Tennessee and the guy on the other side of the field …

Jayden Daniels is playing as well as any quarterback in the SEC.

He’s running well – 121 yards and three scores against Ole Miss after running for three touchdowns against Florida – and he’s not missing much of anything through the air, connecting on 73% of his throws with six scores and a pick in the last three games.

Mississippi State didn’t have any luck against the Crimson Tide defensive backs with its short-range passing game, but Daniels has to start pushing deep from the start.

Texas and Tennessee kept pressing down the field, the defensive backs kept struggling, and everything else opened up.

However …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

LSU doesn’t bomb away – it’s averaging just 11.3 yards per completion.

Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee – it’s not like Alabama has been great on the road so far, and now it gets a night game in Death Valley.

There won’t be anything tricky about this. Alabama will start running early, turn the pass rush loose to pressure Daniels, and Bryce Young should be just accurate enough to own third downs to control the clock.

It’ll take about a half to get there, and then the Bama lines will take over. Two third quarter scoring drives will be enough to let the Tide offense finally settle in.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Alabama vs LSU Game Preview

Why LSU Will Win

There’s no pressure.

The major changes are coming for 2022, there are way too many key injuries, and no one will think the Tigers have any shot to even keep this close, much less pull off the upset without a special performance – and/or a meltdown from Alabama.

However, Florida proved it could run on the Tide. LSU – with two weeks off to rest up – has to pound away early and give it a shot – but this will be more about whether or not QB Max Johnson can get into a groove.

Tennessee might have lost to Alabama by 18, but Hendon Hooker and the passing game were strong. Mississippi State got blown out, but it went Mississippi State and threw for 300 yards.

After holding firm over the first four games, the Tide D has allowed well over 200 yards through the air in each of the last four games. If LSU can push the Bama secondary, and if that ground game can get moving, this gets interesting in a hurry.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Alabama Will Win

No, the LSU running game isn’t good enough.

The 321 yards against the Gators were an aberration – the Tigers haven’t hit the 150-yard mark on the ground against anyone else.

The bigger problem is on the other side, with the run defense getting rumbled over way too easily. The Tigers allowed close to 800 yards over the last three games, and Alabama is going to keep that going by pounding away right away.

The banged up LSU secondary will have a rough time, and Bryce Young will have plenty of shots at big things down the field, but expect a steady dose of Brian Robinson throughout the first half should set the tone, and then …

What’s Going To Happen

Everything will open up.

LSU will look and play like a fresh team for about 20 minutes. It’s going to bring the A effort, come up with a slew of quirky plays, and it’s going to be a fight for a while. But one Alabama scoring run later – helped by a few LSU offensive stalls – and this will all be over.

And then Bama will keep running the ball to close it out.

Why Alabama Will Win

Tennessee might have had a good lead and played a great first half in the semifinal, and then Bama started to step up the tempo, forced a slew of mistakes, and it won the second half by 14 in the 73-68 win.

There wasn’t a whole lot of drama before that in the five game winning streak, but now the team is showing just how strong it can be when it has to turn it up a notch when it really matters.

No one in America shoots more threes, the defensive pressure is still great at forcing mistakes, and coming up with shutdown stretches is the norm.

The Tide only faced LSU once with a 105-75 win in mid-January when the offense nailed everything. LSU has the high-powered offense, but Bama has the extra gear when it comes to cranking up the volume threes.

Why LSU Will Win

The Tiger offense has been terrific.

The defense might be flaky with just enough meltdowns – usually when the rebounds aren’t there at either end – to expect a clunker to be just around the bend, but everything held together over the last four games and in the SEC Tournament to get here.

Arkansas had the tempo and offense to run the Tigers out of the gym, but instead LSU was on from three and came up with a strong outing on the free throw line to win 78-71.

The O can hang with Bama in what should be a back-and-forth fight, and the D is among the best in the nation at guarding the three, and …

What’s Going To Happen

The Tide followed up that 105-point day earlier in the season with a 78-60 win in early February when the Tigers couldn’t seem to hit a thing.

This will be an offensive show no matter what, but Bama’s 3-and-D style will work just enough in the second half to pull away after a strong LSU first half.

Alabama (8-0) vs LSU (3-4) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Alabama Will Win

This thing is an unstoppable machine.

Alabama is putting games away with frightening ease, rolling through an all-SEC schedule without so much as a blip along the way – no one has come closer than 15.

Mac Jones is throwing like an NFL starter, the receiving corps hasn’t missed a beat after losing Jaylen Waddle, and Najee Harris has all but locked up the Doak Walker as the nation’s best running back. The offense is the easy part.

The defense has found its groove, too.

There was some concern early in the year when the Tide got into the wild shootout against Ole Miss, but that’s been it. Teams go into a panic trying to keep up, and it doesn’t work.

Now the Tide get an LSU offense that can’t seem to do anything consistently right. It’s trying, but there are a whole lot of young players trying to find something that works. There’s no running game, and there are too many mistakes from the inexperienced quarterbacks. The Tigers will press, and the mistakes will follow.

Week 14 College Schedule

Why LSU Will Win

The defense has had its moments.

It hasn’t been special, and it was helped by lousy weather last week against Texas A&M, but it’s not bad against the run and does a good job of getting into the backfield.

It might not seem like it with the pass defense getting torched too easily, but there’s enough talent in the secondary to rise up and make a few plays here and there to not make this target practice for Mac Jones and company.

The D is good enough to hold up on third downs, the passing attack isn’t that bad as long as the quarterbacks get time to work, and the fight appears to still be there.

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

This game used to stop the sports world.

It was the biggest game of last year, it’s been a national championship-level battle on a consistent basis, and … it’s not that this time around.

For those of you who believe in these sorts of things, the pattern favors LSU – it has alternated win-loss-win all year, and now it’s coming off a loss. But the talent and everything else favors Alabama.

There’s a chance the Tide come in just a wee bit ready just to get this over with – it’s on to the SEC Championship after this – and there could be a lack of focus after getting past the Auburn game.

They’ll come in, take care of business, and get out. This will be done after the first quarter.
