Tornado creates chaos during high school football practice in Alabama

Well, that was one exciting way to end a football practice for Theodore High School.

There are scramble drills and then there is the scramble drill that players on the football team at Theodore High School in Alabama did this week.

Just your normal summer practice … until a tornado hits.

The coach probably has not seen anyone on his team move so fast.

The Bobcats open the season at home against Baker (Mobile, Ala) on August 23. Fans can stream the game live on the NFHS Network.

Frat boys versus the Power Five? That’s one way to describe an Alabama high school football season opener

One Alabama high school football coach makes a humorous point about his team’s talent.

The challenge of David going up against Goliath in high school football was rather poignantly summed up by one Alabama football coach this week.

He said that his season-opening opponent is so goodhow good are they? They are so good that when his players graduate and go to college, they’ll be in the stands cheering on some of the players they will face next week.

In doing so, Vestavia Hills (Vestavia Hills, Alabama) head football coach Robert Evans made it clear the talent discrepancy between his team and his season opener next week at Carver-Montgomery (Montgomery, Alabama).

Now, let’s get this out of the way: Vestavia Hills are no slouches; they finished 9-3 last year. But Carver-Montgomery has three big-time recruits in the class of 2025, underscoring Evans’s point about his own team.

Playing a tough schedule, Carver-Montgomery had a record of 7-4 a season ago. They are a talented and deep team, led by running back Anthony Rogers, a four-star who is committed to Alabama. In addition, Tristan Norman is a three-star wide receiver who is committed to Texas A&M.

And Terrell Russell, their quarterback, is a three-star with offers including Central Michigan and Georgia Southern.

Evans said that it is a tall task for his players.

“This guy is going to Alabama, this one is going to Florida, this one is going to Texas A&M and this one has 20 offers and we’ve got a bunch of Pi Kapp’s and Phi Gi’s that are going to be tackling the guys that they are going to be cheering for in a year or two,” Evans told journalist Chris McCulley.

Vestavia Hills opens their season at Carver-Montgomery on Aug. 22 and then travels to Auburn (Auburn, Alabama) the next week.

Alabama football coach placed on leave after spanking video surfaces

Blount football coach Josh Harris has been put on administrative leave after a video surfaced last week of him spanking a student.

Josh Harris, a varsity football coach at Blount in Mobile County, Alabama, has been placed on administrative leave after a video surfaced of what appears to be the coach spanking a student-athlete in the locker room, according to a report by Ben Thomas at AL.com.

“Mobile County director of communications Rena Philips confirmed to AL.com on Tuesday night that Harris has been placed on leave with pay while the situation is under investigation.”

An alum of the school, Josh Harris (34) was hired to be Blount’s football coach in December. Harris had previously been the team’s quarterbacks coach and played college football at Tuskegee.

The Blount Leopards defeated Robertsdale (Ala.) this past week 42-24, and Harris was not coaching. The team has this week off but will play Baldwin County next on the 16th.

MYNBC15 reports that the school’s principal and board members refuse to comment on the ongoing investigation.

WATCH: No. 7 Thompson stages miracle comeback to win Alabama 7A title

Thompson High School pulled off a miracle comeback to win an Alabama 7A state championship Wednesday night.

Thompson High School (Ala.), ranked No. 7 in the USA Today Super 25, was on the verge of seeing its storybook 2020 season come to a crushing end in the Alabama 7A state championship game Wednesday night.

Then, a miracle happened.

Auburn High School had Thompson on the ropes, up 28-19 with less than two minutes remaining and in possession of the football in Thompson territory. On third down, Auburn kneeled out of the shotgun in an effort to run more time off the clock before punting. However, the field position Auburn cost itself by kneeling out of the shotgun proved costly, as Thompson blocked Auburn’s punt, scooped it up and used the short field to its advantage en route to a touchdown to cut the lead to two with 18 seconds remaining.

Despite Thompson’s newfound life, Auburn still had the upper hand. The Warriors would have to recover the onside kick and get into field goal range with under 20 seconds and no timeouts.

And that’s exactly what they did.

Thompson miraculously recovered its onside kick attempt and worked its way into field goal range on the back of two defensive pass interference penalties on Auburn. The icing on the cake? A 35-yard field goal to give Thompson a 29-28 win and a state title to boot.

Thompson dominated the Alabama high school football scene throughout 2020, posting a 13-0 record with an average margin of victory of 29 points per game. Its miracle win to bring another state championship back to Alabaster, though?

That is something nobody in Thompson’s program will ever forget.

The high school football championship ending that has to be seen to be believed

The Thompson Warriors won the Alabama Class 7A state championship in miraculous fashion.

With December comes championship football, at least at the high school and college level. The state of Alabama is in the middle of their high school championship games, and on Tuesday night the undefeated Thompson Warriors – playing in their third-straight title game – playing the 12-1 Auburn Tigers in the Class 7A Championship Game at Bryant-Denny Stadium on the campus of the University of Alabama.

The ending has to be seen to be believed.

With just over one minute remaining, Auburn led Thompson 28-19. They lined up in punt formation looking to pin the Warriors deep. Most people thought the contest was over:

But the Warriors got a huge play on special teams to start the improbable comeback:

The Warriors blocked the punt, and with the extra point they were suddenly within two points, with just second left. They would need the onside kick.

Which they recovered:

Then, they got into field goal range thanks to a pair of pass interference penalties, setting up this game-winning field goal attempt from Trevor Hardy.

And he drilled it:

Remember friends, it’s never over until it’s over.

Hillcrest Patriots’ touchdown on the final play is must-see TV

Quite possibly the greatest 2.9 seconds in high school football ever.

It’s not the amount of time you have. It’s what you do with it.

At least, that’s what I thought while watching the greatest 2.9 seconds of the 2020 high school football season (so far) unfold from the game between the Hillcrest Patriots (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) and the Wetumpka Indians (Ala.).

The Pats found themselves in a 13-0 hole after the first quarter of Friday’s non-conference road test but managed to battle back, eventually taking the lead in the third. Wetumpka kept up their momentum in the forth, though, until an Ethan Crawford 30-yard touchdown strike left the Indians trailing by a point with seven minutes left.

It was a game of field position from there, with both teams exchanging punts and playing solid defense, before the Indians put together a drive that ended with Alex Londell’s 20-yard field goal to take the lead with under 15 seconds to go.

And that was more than enough time for Hillcrest to work a miracle.

If a picture is worth a 1000 words, then this video is worth a million (or, in points: a most memorable 6):

And to think: It’s only Week 3!
