Bleacher Report identifies defensive positions as two of Vikings’ biggest weaknesses

The Minnesota Vikings have two huge holes on the defense, according to Bleacher Report.

With J.J. McCarthy’s knee injury, it appears Sam Darnold will enter Week 1 as the starting quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings.

While quarterback is perhaps the biggest weakness on the roster, Bleacher Report noted two other position groups that could be problems:

Interior pass rush and cornerback.

Minnesota has Harrison Phillips, but not much after him. The Vikings have had bad luck at cornerback and traded away second-round bust Andrew Booth Jr. this month. The Vikings brought in Stephon Gilmore for a visit, but he left without a contract.

Bleacher Report believes the Vikings should look at Falcons cornerback A.J. Terrell this next offseason if he enters free agency. The Vikings will need to make a decision on Byron Murphy, who is also set to enter free agency.

5 Falcons players who could cause problems for the Jaguars in Week 4

Here are five Falcons players to watch as the Jaguars attempt to end their two-game losing streak in Week 4:

The Jacksonville Jaguars will look to bounce back from two straight losses when they take on the 2-1 Atlanta Falcons.

Atlanta got out to a 2-1 start, but lost to the Detroit Lions last week to suffer a first loss of the season. Now, Jacksonville meets the Falcons in London in an attempt to get back to .500.

While the Falcons had a rough 2022, they have a more talented team and have looked better after some new additions.

Here are five players who could cause problems for the Jaguars, as they attempt to end their two-game losing streak:

Former Clemson defensive tackle Grady Jarrett added another standout game Sunday, helping his Atlanta Falcons beat the Chicago Bears 27-24.

Jarrett finished the game with two tackles, one sack, a tackle for loss and even had a pass deflection at the line. The sack brings his season total to 5.5, which leads the team.

After the game, Jarrett took to Twitter to poke fun at a group of Chicago fans who went viral for celebrating a bachelor party at the game.

AJ Terrell was also back in action for the Falcons after being out with an injury. The former Clemson cornerback finished with four tackles.

Raheem Morris holds A.J. Terrell in high regard: ‘He’s scary’

Raheem Morris coached A.J. Terrell for one year, and he knows just how talented the Falcons’ cornerback is

The Atlanta Falcons didnโ€™t come into this season with very high expectations from media members and fans. However, they have a handful of legitimate Pro Bowl talents, led by cornerback A.J. Terrell.

Though he has yet to make the Pro Bowl, he was voted a second-team All-Pro last season and ranked among the league leaders in several departments. He allowed a passer rating of just 47.5 and a completion rate of 43.9%, both of which were the lowest in the NFL.

The Ramsโ€™ receiving corps will be tested by Terrell on Sunday afternoon, and defensive coordinator Raheem Morris knows all about his talent. Morris was the Falconsโ€™ defensive coordinator and interim head coach in 2020 when Terrell was drafted, and he has a lot of respect for the former Clemson corner.

โ€œHe’s scary. A.J. Terrell is a guy that I have high regard for,โ€ Morris said. โ€œI remember him coming out of college and we all bashed him because he got beat by Jaโ€™Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson. I think we all kind of wanted to retract those statements. You’re talking about a high-quality individual that came on and was very competitive right from the beginning. I noticed his competitiveness right away, going against Julio (Jones) every day and having a competition that he was able to have as a rookie.โ€

Terrell will most likely match up with Cooper Kupp pretty often on Sunday afternoon, even if he doesnโ€™t necessarily shadow the Rams receiver. Kupp almost never gets shut down by anyone, but Terrell will be one of the better corners he goes up against this season.

Morris loved Terrellโ€™s work ethic and approach to the game as a rookie, and it reminds him of the way Jordan Fuller handled himself with the Rams the last couple of years.

โ€œHe was serious. He came in with the pro-style atmosphere, he came in with the pro-like approach,โ€ Morris said of Terrell. โ€œJust with everything, his work ethic, how he plays, very similar to what Fuller has done for this organization and how he prepares. I got nothing but high regard for A.J. and actually, he was around our guy too, DK (Derion Kendrick), when he was at Clemson and some of the other guys. You know what type of guy he is, what type of guy (weโ€™re) going to have to prepare for.โ€

Between Terrell and Jalen Ramsey, there will be a pair of All-Pro-type cornerbacks on the field this weekend at SoFi Stadium.

Following his breakout 2021 season that saw him earn second-team All-Pro honors, former Clemson cornerback A.J. Terrell is primed and ready for his third NFL season with the Atlanta Falcons in 2022.

The 2020 first-round draft pick is coming off a 2021 campaign during which he didnโ€™t allow more than 32 yards in coverage in a game and yielded only 200 yards over the course of the entire season, while recording the lowest passer rating allowed (47.5) and the lowest completion percentage allowed (43.9) among all NFL corners who qualified, according to PFF.

NFL Insider shows respect for a ‘criminally underappreciated’ former Tiger

A.J. Terrell may be underappreciated by his NFL peers, based on the fact that he didn’t make the NFL Top 100 Players of 2022 list, which is voted on by the players themselves.

However, the former Clemson standout and current Atlanta Falcons cornerback is certainly not underappreciated by this ESPN NFL Insider.

NFL Network has been gradually unveiling the NFL’s Top 100 Players of 2022, and while Terrell was excluded from the list despite having an incredible 2021 season, ESPN’s Field Yates showed his respect to Terrell on social media this week.

Yates made it clear how much he thinks of Terrell when he wrote via Twitter on Thursday, “I try not to overreact too much to the NFL Top 100 players list but there is no universe that exists in which there are 100 football players better than A.J. Terrell.”

Added Yates: “A lockdown corner who is (apparently) criminally underappreciated.”

Terrell was considered by many to have been a Pro Bowl snub after his breakout season last year, but he did earn second-team All-Pro honors by the Associated Press.

A first-round pick of the Falcons in the 2020 NFL Draft (16th overall pick), Terrell tallied 81 total tackles, three tackles for loss, a sack, a forced fumble, 16 passes defended and three interceptions in 16 games this season.

Terrell didnโ€™t allow more than 32 yards in coverage in a game last season, allowed fewer than 20 yards in 13 games last season and also recorded the lowest passer rating allowed (47.5) and the lowest completion percentage allowed (43.9), according to PFF. Additionally, per PFF, the Atlanta native yielded only 200 yards over the course of the entire season.

At Clemson, Terrell was a first-team All-ACC selection in 2019 and third-team All-ACC selection in 2018. He racked up 107 career tackles (3.5 for loss), 29 pass breakups, six interceptions (returned for a total of 160 yards including a 44-yard touchdown) and two forced fumbles in his three-year career from 2017-19.

On Friday, ESPN published a ranking of the NFLโ€™s top 10 cornerbacks for the 2022 seasonย (subscription required).

ESPN surveyed over 50 league executives, coaches, scouts and players to help them come up with the ranking, with the voters giving ESPN their top 10 players at the cornerback position. ESPN then rounded up the results and ranked players based on the number of top-10 votes they received and composite average along with a slew of interviews, research and film-study help from ESPN NFL analyst Matt Bowen.

With all that said, former Tiger and current Atlanta Falcons cornerback A.J. Terrell checked in at No. 9 on ESPNโ€™s ranking of the top 10 cornerbacks for 2022.

Hereโ€™s what ESPNโ€™s article, authored by ESPN staff writer Jeremy Fowler, had to say about Terrell with feedback from an NFC scout and an AFC coach, both of whom praised Terrell:

Terrell struggled as a rookie but became a star in Year 2.

“His production last year was insane,” an NFC scout said. “He rarely gave up an explosive play.”

Terrell gave up the lowest completion percentage as the nearest defender of anyone on this list (41.1%, per NFL Next Gen Stats), allowing 30 receptions on 73 targets for 297 yards and three touchdowns. And per Next Gen Stats, his 0.6 yards allowed per snap were the lowest in the NFL among outside corners with at least 300 coverage snaps last season. And one NFL team told me it counted Terrell giving up one explosive play in man coverage all year.

What’s more: The 2020 first-rounder did all this on an Atlanta defense that ranked 26th in total defense and 29th in scoring defense.

“He’s the next really good one for me,” an AFC coach said. “He’s top three to five right now.”

Terrell wasย named as a second-team All-Proย by the Associated Press after tallying 81 total tackles, three tackles for loss, a sack, a forced fumble, 16 passes defended and three interceptions in 16 games last season.

A first-round pick of the Falcons in the 2020 NFL Draft (16th overall), Terrell didnโ€™t allow more than 32 yards in coverage in a game this past season, allowed fewer than 20 yards in 13 games this past season and also recorded the lowest passer rating allowed (47.5) and the lowest completion percentage allowed (43.9),ย according to Pro Football Focus.

Additionally, per PFF, Terrell yielded only 200 yards over the course of the entire season.
