Woodward Academy (Atlanta, Ga.) four-star defensive end AJ Hoffler took his first official visit to Clemson this weekend and came away impressed with everything the Tigers had to offer.

Clemson isn’t an unfamiliar place to Hoffler, who has made multiple trips to Tiger Town. Speaking with The Clemson Insider regarding his official visit experience, Hoffler felt like the entire weekend was perfectly executed.

“It was good,” Hoffler told TCI in a phone interview Sunday. “I had a great time. I was surprised by a couple of things. I saw everything that I expected to see and then some other things. I was really impressed with the visit overall.”

We asked Hoffler to expound on what exactly surprised him and he indicated that it more so had to do with the photoshoot and as well as spending time with current players on Clemson’s roster. Hoffler said that the plan was for the 31 official visitors to hang out with some of the players for one day, but it wound up being two instead.

The highlight of Hoffler’s official visit experience was getting to spend time with the players and he got to see how they are on a day-to-day basis and what they’re like as people. He also got to know some other recruits that he’s been on visits with before, but this past weekend he was finally able to connect with some of them. All in all, Hoffler made a lot of new friends on the team and recruits.

“It was just a great time overall,” Hoffler said.

Hoffler got along with all of Clemson’s defensive linemen, but it was Myles Murphy, who served as his player host for the weekend.

“He’s kind of like me, laid back, doesn’t talk too much,” Hoffler said of Clemson’s junior defensive end. “He was being honest about everything. He had all the offers and stuff too, he was telling me why he chose Clemson.”

Those were the high points for Hoffler, as he’s been to Clemson a handful of times this year already. This time around, he was accompanied by both of his parents, as well as his grandparents.

“That was my grandparents’ first time there and they loved it,” Hoffler said. “My mom and dad had already been there, so it just reassured how they felt about it. I think everyone all-around really enjoyed the visit.”

Now that Hoffler has had an evening to digest, where would he say Clemson stands in his recruitment, especially after this past weekend’s events?

“I would say it’s about the same,” he said. “I think they were probably already at the top. I don’t think they could’ve gone much higher per se, but they definitely did a great job. I was really impressed with the visit.”

Hoffler figures to have an eventual decision made in either a month or two. After Clemson, he’ll be officially visiting the University of North Carolina from June 24-26. He also plans to make Ohio State one of his official visits as well, though, nothing has been set up at the moment.

According to Hoffler, the message from Clemson’s coaching staff this weekend was simple. They want him to take his time and not rush a decision. All in all, he’s a top player on their board and a priority for the Tigers in the 2023 recruiting class.

Clemson has ‘closed the gap’ with 4-star DE target ahead of upcoming official visit

The Clemson Insider recently caught up with a dynamic Peach State pass-rusher, who quietly visited Clemson this past weekend.

Right before we spoke with Woodward Academy (Atlanta, Ga.) four-star AJ Hoffler, he had just gotten off the phone with Clemson defensive ends coach Lemanski Hall.

That conversation took place over a week ago, and while Hoffler has since made a return trip to Tiger Town, we wanted to share the latest on his recruitment and where Clemson currently stands in the mix of things.

“I’ve just been talking to them more and more,” Hoffler said. “I’ve just been in more communication. I know they got a d-end commit (David Ojiegbe) the other day, they were just like, ‘No pressure, take your time. It’s all good on our end. We feel the same way. We still want you really bad.’ So, it’s kind of picked up and I talk to them more.”

Hoffler estimated that he calls both Hall and defensive coordinator Wesley Goodwin multiple times a week. He also texts frequently with defensive tackles coach Nick Eason, cornerbacks coach Mike Reed and head coach Dabo Swinney.

“I would say they’re pretty good,” he said regarding his relationships with Hall and Goodwin. “They’ve grown a lot. I probably talk to those two more than any other coach now, probably by a lot. I’ll talk to one school once a week, every other week. I talk to them three-to-four times a week. They talk to me about football, off-the-field stuff, what they have planned for me, as far as Zoom calls, visits or official visits.

“We talk about everything and they’re always asking how my mom and dad are doing…I would say we have a more so genuine relationship than just a recruitment relationship with both of them.”

Right now, Hoffler’s next visit to Clemson will be for the program’s official visit weekend from June 3-5.

“That will be my (fourth) time there, so I’m not too sure,” Hoffler said when asked what he’s hoping to see during his official visit weekend. “I’ve never been on an official visit. I’ve never really heard much. I’ve had friends that have been on them, but they’ve never told me what all separates an unofficial from an official. I always assumed that they were kind of the same. Right now, I’m not really too sure what to expect.”

Hoffler is hoping that his next visit to Clemson gives him some reassurance and confirms how he feels about the school.

“Hopefully, my parents enjoy it as well,” he said, “because even though it’s my choice, I still want to make sure that my parents do feel comfortable with the school. All my top schools, they say they like a lot. I just want to make sure they feel the same way and make sure the school feels the same way about me.”

While Ohio State was once the leader in the clubhouse, Hoffler indicated that Clemson has since closed that perceived gap.

“I think Clemson has done a really good job, as far as recruiting me,” Hoffler said. “I would say that they have closed the gap.”

Hoffler’s recruitment is still 100% open, but he did say that he’ll start focusing more on some schools than others.

Top DE target, mother ‘very impressed’ by Clemson visit

This Monday, Clemson played host to one of its top defensive end targets in the 2023 recruiting class.

Woodward Academy (Atlanta, Ga.) four-star A.J. Hoffler made his way to Tiger Town, along with his mother, for an unofficial visit. It was important for the newly-offered pass-rusher to get back on campus.

“It was really good,” Hoffler told The Clemson Insider. “I didn’t have time to stay for the whole day, but it was really just to go up again so my mom could see the campus and the environment and she really liked it a bunch.

“And then I got to meet with Coach Swinney for 40 minutes, so that was really good. Then I got to watch film with Coach (Wesley) Goodwin and Coach (Lemanksi) Hall and draw some plays up on the board for myself. Overall, I enjoyed the visit a bunch and I was really even more impressed and my mom was very impressed as well.”

Hoffler was accompanied by his father for Clemson’s “spring elite day” on Saturday, March 5, which was the Tigers’ second junior day of the year. He wanted to come back to check out spring practice, but he was unable to do that.

He was also supposed to come to check out Clemson on Friday, April 8, but his mother, who is an Atlanta-based lawyer, was invited to go to the White House after Ketanji Brown Jackson was confirmed to the Supreme Court last week.

It ended up working out for Hoffler, who received the undivided attention of the coaching staff while he was back on campus. When he ate lunch, he did so with Hall, Goodwin and defensive tackles coach Nick Eason. Hoffler pretty much talked to every coach that was on campus Friday.

Hoffler indicated that Hall and Goodwin reach out more probably than any other school, as his relationships have really picked up with them.

“It’s progressed a lot,” he said of his relationships with Hall and Goodwin. “I would say before they offered me, I was just hearing from Coach Hall. Well, I was hearing from all the coaches, but not as much as I do now. I hear from Coach (Mike) Reed, Coach Hall, Coach Goodwin. I hear from them like twice a week, definitely Coach Hall and Coach Goodwin, and sometimes I’ll hear from Coach Eason. Sometimes I hear from Coach (Mickey) Conn and sometimes I hear from Coach Swinney.”

During his sit-down conversation with Clemson coach Dabo Swinney, Hoffler was told that Clemson will be losing a total of seven defensive linemen (four defensive ends) after the 2022 season. The Tigers will be signing three defensive ends in their 2023 recruiting class.

“If I go there, I have a good chance of playing early,” Hoffler said. “It’s not guaranteed, but it’s a good chance because they are losing four ends. That was just football-wise and off the field, he was telling me how he would develop me as a man and person and give me tools to be successful further on in my life. I liked the off-the-field message more, but I still liked the on-the-field.”

Playing early will go into Hoffler’s decision if he were to go to Clemson, but it isn’t as big a factor as everything else. At the same, that will still be under consideration when he ultimately makes his college decision.

“Say I were to get hurt or something, I know that Clemson’s not like other schools,” he said. “I know they would still build me the same way, with or without football. That’s kind of the biggest thing for me and Clemson is how much they care for their players. They care for everyone the same way. Everything is fair and all is genuine. It’s just a great environment all around.”

Hoffler said how much the Tigers value education and the culture within the program are two things that probably make Clemson stand out the most.

He also indicated that Clemson is closing the gap with Ohio State, which he’s long maintained as the top school in his recruitment.

“I would say that the gap there is probably really small now, almost tied from my top choice,” Hoffler said. “That’s just how high I think of Clemson right now following the visit and I’m excited to see where it goes.”

Just because Hoffler plans on making his decision before the summer is over, he is planning to take his Clemson official visit on the same days as everyone else, from June 3-5.

Hoffler (6-5, 240) is ranked as the No. 31 defensive lineman and No. 199 overall prospect in the 2023 class by 247Sports.

4-star EDGE will heavily consider Florida after visit

Four-star defensive end AJ Hoffler said he will heavily consider Florida in his recruitment after he visited the Swamp.

Four-star edge defender AJ Hoffler made his first trip to the Swamp and Florida this past weekend. After his first visit, he said he will heavily consider the Gators moving forward, according to Gators Online.

Hoffler said his visit to Florida surpassed all of his expectations. He came away impressed with how the Gators’ older players and the new coaching had already forged strong bonds.

For Florida, outside linebacker coach and alumni liaison Mike Peterson has led the charge for Hoffler, who enjoyed his time around the Gator great but wished he had more to spend with him. Hoffler had to leave campus earlier than expected in order to get back to Atlanta.

However, they still spoke before and after spring practice, which Florida kicked off last week, and hit the field again Saturday while prospects were in town. Peterson told him that depending on how his body fills out that he would likely play as a defensive end or as a linebacker who can get after the quarterback.

Head coach Billy Napier also made sure he spoke with him and his mother before they left. Hoffler said other head coaches haven’t done that and appreciated that Napier did that.

Besides the Gators, Hoffler said he holds offers from Ohio State, Michigan, Clemson, Texas, Florida State, Auburn, Kentucky and Arkansas among others. The On3 Consensus rankings currently consider the Atlanta native as the 271st best player overall and the 31st best player at his position.

He said the Gators aren’t on the same tier currently as the Buckeyes and Clemson but are just below it where they still have a chance.

Visit moves Clemson up for newly offered 4-star DL

The Clemson Insider caught up with a Georgia-based defensive lineman, who has recently emerged as a priority target for the Tigers in the class of 2023, especially after this weekend.

Prior to visiting Clemson this past weekend, four-star AJ Hoffler had been in constant contact with Lemanski Hall. Clemson’s defensive ends coach had previously been aiming to get Hoffler on campus and was finally able to do so for the Tigers’ second junior day of the year — their “spring elite day” — last Saturday.

Hoffler was one of the first visitors to announce that he had been offered by Clemson this past weekend.

“It was good,” Hoffler said of his Clemson visit this past weekend. It was very nice. I heard it would be. In my opinion — I’ve seen a bunch of YouTube videos and some of my friends have been there — it was better than anything I could’ve seen.”

The Woodward Academy (Atlanta, Ga.) product walked us through how he found out about his offer, which was presented to him by Hall.

“It was during the photo shoot,” he said regarding how he found out about the offer. “I was in-between stations and then, one of the coach assistant guys told me that Coach Ski wanted to talk to me and then he pulled me over to the side with my dad and they were like, ‘Thank you for coming, we’re gonna offer you.’

“I started jumping up and down because it’s Clemson and they only offer 60-70 dudes a class, so you have to be pretty good. It’s a select few that get that offer, so it means a lot.”

Hoffler went into his visit not expecting anything but knew that an offer was definitely possible. In any event, he was still shocked

How did Hoffler feel when he left Clemson’s campus with an offer in hand?

“I was excited,” Hoffler said. “It moved Clemson up (in my recruitment) because the visit was way better than any other visit I’ve been on besides Ohio State, so I’d say it moved them up to like a close second to Ohio State in my top schools.”

His favorite part of the visit itself was getting to watch practice and seeing how the coaches coach. Hoffler also liked how the coaches’ wives and kids were there, which definitely highlighted Clemson’s family environment.

“It was more of a family vibe than any school I’ve been to,” he said. “A bunch of schools say that, but at Clemson, I actually felt it within the first hour of being there.

“Throughout the whole day, I probably heard the word ‘people,’ maybe 300 times because that’s what they focus on. Coach Swinney was like, ‘Don’t come to Clemson because of the facilities or the NIL.’ He was more so focused on the academics and the people-side versus anything else because everyone has nice facilities, everyone is gonna have NIL. He was saying that people is what separates Clemson from everything else.”

Speaking of that, Hoffler definitely felt connected to Hall, who introduced him to his wife and talked a lot about his family. He also praised his style of coaching.

Between Hall, Nick Eason and Wesley Goodwin, Hoffler was told a similar message. It was reiterated to him that after the 2022 season, Clemson is likely to lose four defensive ends to the NFL — Xavier Thomas, KJ Henry, Justin Mascoll and presumably Myles Murphy.

The Tigers will need some replacements — like Hoffler — who are likely going to come in and play right away.

“So, that was good to know,” Hoffler said. “You’re developed good when you get there and at least in my class, you have a good chance of playing as a freshman.”

This coveted 4-star EDGE sets visit date with Florida

The Gators get a first visit from this coveted 2023 DL mid-late in March.

Among the many prep prospects who will be hosted this month by Florida football’s recruiting team is four-star defensive lineman AJ Hoffler. The 6-foot-5-inch, 245-pounder out of Woodward Academy in Atlanta, Georgia, announced recently that he plans on visiting Gainesville on March 19 to get acclimated with the campus and the new staff.

Hoffler received an offer from head coach Billy Napier himself back in late February, though outside linebackers coach Mike Peterson has been spearheading the effort to woo the young EDGE defender. According to Swamp247, he had some encouraging words about his impression of Peterson.

“He’s pretty cool, but we have only been able to talk for a couple of minutes. I think I may have talked to him once before when he was at South Carolina. But overall he seems pretty cool. I plan on getting down there in March or April. Coach Napier sounded different than the way he looks when I talked to him on the phone. He sounds older than I thought he was. He was pretty straightforward and to the point.”

Florida is not the only school on Hoffler’s itinerary, as he visited the Clemson Tigers last weekend and is slated to visit the Ohio State Buckeyes this month as well. The latter is the only school with a “warm” interest so far, according to 247Sports, but he does currently carry 49 total offers including a handful of fellow SEC programs who have extended their interest.

Hoffler currently ranks No. 199 overall in the nation in the 2023 recruiting class, while ranking No. 31 nationally at his position and No. 21 overall in the state of Georgia, according to 247Sports.

Dynamic Peach State pass-rusher ‘excited’ to check out Clemson this weekend

The Clemson Insider recently caught up with a dynamic Georgia-based pass-rusher, who will be on campus this weekend for Clemson’s Junior Day.

Right before we spoke with Woodward Academy (Atlanta, Ga.) four-star AJ Hoffler, he had just gotten off the phone with Clemson defensive ends coach Lemanski Hall.

Hoffler — a 6-5, 245-pound junior — said that he talked about the details of his upcoming visit with Hall on the phone. Hall was just making sure that Hoffler was still good to attend this weekend.

“I’m excited,” he said. “It’s one of those schools that since I was 10-years-old, I would watch their facility tours on YouTube and stuff. I’ve always wanted to get there in person. So, I’m excited that I get to do that for myself.”

While Hoffler doesn’t currently hold an offer from Clemson, he’s hopeful that could change come this weekend. In any event, he respects that Clemson and Hall would get to know him before they pull the trigger on an offer. At this stage in Hoffler’s recruitment, he’d like to think that if the Tigers were to offer him, they would also take a commitment.

“They’re just trying to get me on campus,” Hoffler said regarding what he’s been hearing from Clemson. “When I talk with them, they just say that they like my film. (Coach Hall) wants to get to know me more. I know Clemson is one of those schools that wait to get to know you before they offer you. That’s kind of where I am with Clemson, just talking to Coach Hall about life and stuff.”

Right now, Hoffler talks with Hall around once a week. He feels like they have a good, genuine relationship that goes beyond just football. They talk about other things and Hall often asks about Hoffler’s parents.

“Most coaches I talk to, never ask anything other than football, it’s cool that coaches care about you more than just football,” he said. “I prefer a coach that cares about you more than just football, so I like that. I like that a lot. If I were to go there, he would care about me more than just football.”

What is Hoffler looking to see when he arrives on campus come Saturday?

“I’m trying to see the academics,” he said. “I’m trying to see the campus. I’ve never seen the actual campus of Clemson. I want to see how Coach Hall coaches. I want to see how the DC (Wes Goodwin) coaches in person. Just to see what it’s like there. I’ve never been on campus before, so I just want to see what the environment is. Hopefully, it’s as good a tour as I’ve heard it’ll be.”

This past season, Hoffler recorded 12 sacks, 50 tackles (21 for loss) and three forced fumbles. He thought his junior campaign was equivalent to the work he put in the offseason prior and was able to show what kind of player he is.

As for Hoffler and his game, he plays fast, he plays with his hands well and he plays physically. While he doesn’t view himself as the best run-defender, he still thinks he’s very solid in that department. Hoffler specializes in his pass-rush with his speed, length and ability.

What has Hall told Hoffler that he likes about his game?

“He said that he likes my quickness, my hands, my pass-rushing, my length and my athleticism,” he said.”

Hoffler is considered by Rivals to be the nation’s No. 29 defensive end and No. 24 prospect in the Peach State for the 2023 recruiting class.
