Transfer guard Aidan Mahaney picks Connecticut over Kentucky basketball

Transfer Aidan Mahaney chooses Connecticut over Kentucky basketball.

Former Saint Mary’s guard Aidan Mahaney has transferred to the back-to-back national championship winning Connecticut Huskies over Kentucky basketball along with Creighton, Virginia and the Michigan Wolverines.

The Wildcats hosted Mahaney last week but the trip to Lexington wasn’t quite enough to land the West Coast Conference All-Conference player. He had this to say about his decision.

I chose UConn because I want to compete for national championships. UConn is a place that keeps the main thing the main thing. The coaching staff has proven themselves to be the best in the country the last two years. I chose UConn to be pushed, to be a part of something bigger than myself, to compete for a national championship and to become a pro.

Mahaney was a 4-star prospect ranked 134th overall and 18th among shooting guards in his class, according to 247 Sports Composite.

The 6-foot-3 combo guard is two-time first-team All-WCC selection and one of the most clutch players in the nation over the past two seasons. With the Gaels, Mahaney averaged 14.0 points, 2.6 rebounds, 2.9 assist and shot 37.5% from 3-point range.

Defending champion UConn Huskies add sharpshooting guard in transfer portal

Former Saint Mary’s guard Aidan Mahaney committed to Danny Hurley and the UConn Huskies out of the NCAA transfer portal.

Danny Hurley and the UConn Huskies are not content to just sit on their laurels after winning back to back national championships.

The team managed to reload after losing a bunch of talent from the first title team, and coach Hurley is hard at work replenishing the roster once again after four of his five starters departed this offseason.

The latest addition for the Huskies is former Saint Mary’s guard Aidan Mahaney, a rising junior who averaged 13.9 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 2.3 assists across two years in Moraga, twice being named All-WCC and helping lead the Gaels to an outright conference title last season.

Mahaney is a strong outside shooter, although his numbers dipped from year one to year two after increasing his volume. He shot 40% from deep on 5.3 attempts as a freshman but just 35.5% as a sophomore while taking 6.9 per game.

Still, Mahaney’s experience and strong outside shooting should make him a key piece for Hurley’s team next season, alongside fellow transfer portal addition Tarris Reed out of Michigan and incoming freshman Liam McNeeley, a decommit from Indiana who should fill a valuable role right away.

If Alex Karaban opts to return and this program finds a few more transfers to round out the class, UConn will once again be in the mix for a national championship and could do what has not been done since the 1970’s: win three titles in a row.

Guard Aidan Mahaney set to visit Kentucky basketball this weekend

Guard Aidan Mahaney will visit the Kentucky Wildcats this weekend.

Aidan Mahaney is looking for a new home this off-season. He has plenty of options, but it does appear as though Kentucky basketball will be one of them.

Last season, Mahaney played guard for the Saint Mary’s Gaels, averaging nearly 14 points per game. He also shot over 35% from three point range, something new Wildcats coach Mark Pope covets.

Mahaney has already had some visits with teams looking to bring him in. He recently visited Creighton, and is planning to visit Connecticut and Virginia. Now, it appears that he’ll take a visit to Pope and Kentucky as well.

Analyst Jeff Goodman posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that Mahaney would be visiting the Wildcats this weekend.

Mark Pope continues to work on building a roster, after losing every player from last year’s squad. He’s having to start from scratch, and adding a player of Mahaney’s quality would be a really nice get. Fans will have to wait and see how it goes, but getting a visit from him is a good start.

Alabama Basketball reaches out to Saint Mary’s transfer guard Aidan Mahaney

The Alabama basketball coaching staff is one of the programs that has reportedly reached out to Saint Mary’s transfer Aidan Mahaney.

The Alabama Crimson Tide men’s basketball coaching staff has been busy on the recruiting trail ever since the season ended. The Crimson Tide have already landed two players via the transfer portal in Pepperdine transfer Houston Mallette and USF transfer Chris Youngblood. Alabama has reportedly shown interest in Saint Mary’s transfer guard Aidan Mahaney.

According to Fox Sports’ Aaron Torres, over 115 programs reached out to Mahaney last night. The Crimson Tide are hopeful that they will be able to enter the mix. With there being uncertainty at the guard position heading into next season, Alabama could use some experience and depth.

Mahaney would provide just that. The sophomore from Lafayette, California averaged 13.9 points per game, 2.6 rebounds per game, and 2.6 assists per game last season with the Gaels. He shot 38.6% from the floor and 35.5% from beyond the arc.

Currently, Alabama has two guards on the roster with pending decisions coming from guards Mark Sears and Latrell Wrightsell Jr. Mahaney would provide an immediate boost, so it will be interesting to see if the Crimson Tide decide to bring him in for an official visit.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the latest regarding the Alabama men’s basketball program and its involvement in the transfer portal.
