Two Aggies named NCAA woman of the year nominees

Two Aggies were nominated for NCAA Woman of the Year.

Yesterday, the NCAA announced that graduate student-athletes Tatiana Makarova (tennis) and Jaevin Reed (track & field) were nominated for the 32nd edition of the NCAA Woman of the Year award – one of the most prestigious national honors a woman student-athlete can achieve. As 2022 is the 50th anniversary of Title IX, this award represents another opportunity to celebrate women competing in intercollegiate athletics.

The NCAA Woman of the Year award honors a graduating female college athlete, across all three NCAA divisions, whose career embodies academic achievement, athletic excellence, community service, and leadership. Directed by the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics, the organization received over 550 nominations – nearly half of those being student-athletes from Division I institutions.

Looking forward, conference offices will select from all nominees in the “conference-round” voting, come August, with the selection committee narrowing their field to a top-10 list in each of the three divisions. The winner of the 2022 NCAA Woman of the Year award will be selected from those final 30 nominees, which will be announced at an award ceremony in Indianapolis.

Aggie Women’s Tennis advances to the NCAA Elite Eight

Aggie Women’s Tennis continues magical season, advancing to Elite 8 with victory over Vanderbilt

The Aggies women’s tennis program is a perennial NCAA tournament team, making an appearance in the national championship bracket each year for the last decade, but the 2022-2023 team seems to be special. They entered the tournament ranked #7 in the nation, and have proceeded to make the deepest run an A&M women’s tennis program has made since the 2012-2013 team finished second in the nation losing to Stanford 4-3 after valiant comeback effort fell just short.

The Aggie women took on conference foe Vanderbilt in the Sweet-16 round on Saturday, and handed the Lady Commadores a 4-0 sweep to advance to the elite eight.

Carson Branstine (#1 Singles), Mary Stoiana (#3 Singles), Jayci Goldsmith (#4 Singles), and the duo of Branstine/Stoiana (#2 Doubles) notched victories to give the Aggies the sweep, and move them to 33-1 on the year.

“We had high hopes going into the season, but I don’t think anyone would have thought we’d be 33-1 right now. We thought we could win the conference and we definitely thought we had a shot at winning a national title, but to be in the position we are now is great. Our mission all year has been to win the national title. We used that California match as fuel for the season, and it has only made us stronger.” – Head Coach Mark Weaver
