While it’s fair to say that AEW might not yet have established which of its annual pay-per-view shows is bigger than all the rest — its version of WrestleMania, if you will — AEW Double or Nothing has every right to claim that title.

Not only does it have the strongest theming, with casino and gambling elements since it was originally held in Las Vegas, Double or Nothing was also the first ever PPV in AEW history, with the initial show taking place in May 2019. It’s also showcased some of the promotion’s most obvious displays of creativity, with the 2020 and 2021 shows held at Daily’s Place in Jacksonville due to the COVID-19 pandemic and featuring the Stadium Stampede cinematic matches at adjacent TIAA Bank Field.

AEW, Joe Hand Promotions teaming to bring Double or Nothing to movie theaters

AEW and Joe Hand Promotions announced that Double or Nothing will be showing in select movie theaters on Sunday, May 29.

Want to watch AEW Double or Nothing this Sunday with other fans and on a screen bigger than the one you have in your home? AEW and Joe Hand Promotions have a solution for you.

AEW announced Monday that the two companies are joining forces to bring Double or Nothing to “select theatres around the country” this Sunday, May 29, beginning at 7 p.m. That start time is significant, as it means the theater broadcast will include the Buy-In pre-show, which is expected to feature the Hookhausen (Hook and Danhausen) match against Tony Nese and Mark Sterling.

“AEW is at the forefront of creating exciting opportunities that united fans together in new non traditional venues like movie theatres to experience their events,” Joe Hand, Jr., President, Joe Hand Promotions, said in a press release. “We’re proud to partner with them and help them grow their fan base and their brand in theatres across the U.S.”

The press release also confirmed the card for Double or Nothing as it stands today, though this week’s Dynamite and Rampage shows from Las Vegas could still add a match or two:

  • AEW World Championship: Hangman Page (c) vs. CM Punk
  • AEW Women’s World Championship: Thunder Rosa (c) vs. Serena Deeb
  • AEW World Tag Team Championship: Jungle Boy & Luchasaurus (c) vs. Ricky Starks & Powerhouse Hobbs vs. Keith Lee & Swerve Strickland
  • TBS Championship: Jade Cargill (c) vs. Anna Jay
  • Anarchy in the Arena: Jericho Appreciation Society vs. Jon Moxley, Bryan Danielson, Santana, Ortiz and Eddie Kingston
  • Men’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament Finals: Adam Cole vs. Winner of Kyle O’Reilly/Samoa Joe
  • Women’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament Finals: TBD
  • Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson) vs. The Hardys (Matt & Jeff Hardy)
  • Death Triangle (PAC, Penta Oscuro, Rey Fenix) vs. House of Black (Malakai Black, Brody King, Buddy Matthews)

Paige VanZant expected to be added to AEW Double or Nothing card

A match featuring former UFC star Paige VanZant is “listed” for AEW Double or Nothing in Las Vegas on May 29.

It’s not definite yet, but MMA star Paige VanZant could be making her AEW in-ring debut this Sunday at Double or Nothing.

On the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer said a match pairing VanZant with either Scorpio Sky or Ethan Page against Sammy Guevara and Tay Conti is “listed” for the pay-per-view, which takes place May 29 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas (h/t to Andrew Ravens of WrestlingNews.co for the transcription).

They’re still going to do something with Sammy Guevara and Scorpio Sky. So the plan for sure was a mixed tag. …

They said they were gonna do it until they get the match they want, and they made it very clear the match they wanted was Sammy and Tay against Paige VanZant and Scorpio Sky or Ethan Page, they want that mixed tag. Unless something changed, the mixed tag is it….I was outright told over the weekend that it was listed. Until it’s announced it’s not announced, they could do it a different way. But, I was actually outright told that the match is tentatively scheduled for the pay-per-view.

VanZant’s most recent appearance on AEW programming came on the April 27 episode of AEW Dynamite, when she assisted Sky in winning the TNT Championship from Guevara in a Ladder match. The former UFC fighter was said to have signed with AEW in March, but she has yet to compete in an official match.

VanZant sparked some speculation of her own by posting new clips of some of her pro wrestling training on Twitter this weekend.

The rivalry between Sky and Guevara has included Sky’s Men of the Year partner Page and American Top Team head Dan Lambert, as well as Guevara’s girlfriend and fellow AEW wrestler Conti. But it has been somewhat confusing at times, with Sky’s side demanding a mixed tag team match — that would presumably involve VanZant — without spelling out exactly who would be in it or where it would take place.

Double or Nothing would be a perfect time for it, if AEW feels it has time on what is already a pretty loaded card. The promotion has live episodes of Dynamite and Rampage set for Las Vegas this week that should provide an answer as to whether fans will finally see VanZant as a pro wrestler during the holiday weekend.
