AEW Battle of the Belts 9 results: Sammy takes a huge fall, champs retain

See how the title matches went on AEW Battle of the Belts IX, as well as Sammy Guevara’s ridiculous dive.

When it comes to truth in advertising, few events can hang with an AEW Battle of the Belts show. These quarterly cards offer nothing but championship matches, though to be fair, usually not the top titles.

Be that as it may, we would never complain about an hour of bonus wrestling on free TV where there are real stakes for each bout. As well, some of the title bouts on previous editions of this show have seemed kind of random, but the only one on this one that fits that description is Orange Cassidy’s title defense, and that’s kind of his whole thing.

So yeah, championships on the line is something we dig. Will any of them change hands? Let’s find out.

AEW Battle of the Belts IX results from Norfolk:

  • The show begins with the first match already underway, as the tag team title street fight got rolling during the closing moment of Collision
  • Big Bill and Ricky Starks def. Chris Jericho and Sammy Guevara vs. by pinfall in a Street Fight to retain the AEW World Tag Team Championship; the match starts outside the arena, literally in the street, and ranges all over the backstage area to include a number of weapons, including a fire extinguisher, a copier and various food items, but the end comes after some well-timed interference by the Don Callis Family, including Powerhouse Hobbs pulling Starks away from a very high dive by Guevara that sends him through part of the stage

  • Another vignette shows Serena Deeb ready to return and seek her first AEW gold
  • Julia Hart def. Anna Jay by submission to retain the AEW TBS Championship
  • Sonjay Dutt and Karen Jarrett want Jay Lethal and Jeff Jarrett back on the same page, and Satnam Singh accidentally just kind of makes things worse
  • Orange Cassidy def. Preston Vance by pinfall to retain the AEW International Championship, with Roderick Strong and The Kingdom watching from the ramp
  • They don’t stay on the ramp, sliding in afterward and throwing Vance and Jose the Assistant out; the show ends with Strong telling Cassidy the clock is ticking

AEW Battle of the Belts 8 results: Daniel Garcia dances when he should be fighting

No AEW championships changed hands in Memphis, but that doesn’t mean the show was free of intrigue.

It’s that time again. And by that, we mean time for Battle of the Belts, AEW’s quarterly hour of nothing but title matches. It’s kind of hard to believe this is the eighth installment, one of those definite “time flies” things.

As is typical for these shows, tonight’s edition from Memphis doesn’t include a world title match but does have several of the other championships up for grabs. And it will be interesting to see if the House of Black makes its presence felt, as the group is back to full strength and flexed its muscle all over Dynamite prior to this show.

Let’s dive in and see what we’ve got.

AEW Battle of the Belts VIII results:

  • Orange Cassidy def. John Silver by pinfall to retain the AEW International Championship
  • Andrade El Idolo is asked how he feels after his match with Bryan Danielson, but C.J. Perry says with a little guidance she could become the biggest and most handsome star in the world; he seems surprised to say the least
  • Smart Mark Sterling disses the people of Memphis and calls Tony Nese the future TV champ … and Nese insults the fans as well
  • Samoa Joe def. Tony Nese by pinfall to retain the ROH Television Championship; after the match, Joe calls out MJF, saying he’s coming for the AEW World Championship
  • Kris Statlander def. Willow Nightingale by pinfall to retain the AEW TBS Championship; Skye Blue isn’t happy that Nightingale shakes the champ’s hand after the match and has a short staredown with Statlander before she leaves
  • Orange Cassidy is upset with the BCC, so much so that he says he and Kazuchika Okada will take on Bryan Danielson and Claudio Castagnoli next week in Philadelphia on Dynamite
  • The Acclaimed and Daddy Ass scissor with the Memphis Grizzlies mascot, because why not?
  • The Acclaimed and Daddy Add def. Daniel Garcia, Angelo Parker and Matt Menard by pinfall to retain the AEW World Trios Championship, with Garcia paying for it when he dances at an inopportune time

AEW Battle of the Belts VII results: 3 champs retain in Calgary

AEW Battle of the Belts VII saw three championships up for grabs, but did any change hands?

Does one good show deserve another? AEW Collision, which featured both Owen Hart Foundation Tournament finals and an absolute banger of a tag team title match between FTR and Bullet Club Gold, just rolled right into Battle of the Belts VII.

We mean that literally, too, as the streamers were still coming down from the Men’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament final when the broadcast switched over. Let’s roll with it as well and see what’s going down.

AEW Battle of the Belts VII results from Calgary:

Jushin “Thunder” Liger is out to hand out the Owen Hart cup, but Ricky Starks takes it from him and heads to the back.

Orange Cassidy def. Lance Archer by countout to retain the AEW International Championship

This … is not the guy you want to be facing if you’re Orange Cassidy and already worn down from tons of title defenses. He seems to have a solution, however, by piling security guards on top of Archer on the floor. It doesn’t work for long but was a nice idea, anyway.

Both men take some huge moves and keep on going, but lots of it is going on outside the ring. Orange takes advantage of that by knocking Archer off the apron and rolling back into the ring just before the ref counts to 10, allowing him to retain by the skin of his teeth.

The Acclaimed have arrived in Calgary. Max Caster is upset about QTV talking smack about them, so he vows to beat them in the ring and on the mic Friday on Rampage. But that’s not all: Anthony Bowens says next Saturday on Collision, The Acclaimed will get their rematch for the Trios Championship.

Toni Storm def. Taya Valkyrie by pinfall to retain the AEW Women’s World Championship

A somewhat bitter Ruby Soho accompanies Storm to the ring. Buoyed by her home fans, Valkyrie races out to a quick start, but one can’t help but feel the numbers game is going to get her eventually.

The feed cuts out during the match, however, and the show moves on when the broadcast returns, so we didn’t get to see the finish of the match. A replay at the end of the show verifies that, yep, Soho made the difference to help her Outcasts teammate keep her gold.

Tony Schiavone welcomes Dr. Martha Hart to present Starks and Willow Nightingale with their Owen Hart Foundation belts and trophies. She gives a nice speech, and even though it seems like it might be a setup for Starks to fully commit to a heel turn after he cheated to win, everything stays peaceful.

Luchasaurus def. Christian Cage by pinfall to retain the AEW TNT Championship

You know the fans would love to see Spears get his hands on Cage, but that way leads to danger as Luchasaurus takes advantage … and Scorpio Sky watches on a monitor backstage.

The dinosaur man ends up winning in fairly short order, allowing Cage to pose with the belt as he is wont to do.

Opening Bell: WWE prepares for Extreme Rules, Dynamite going to OT

Get set for the week in WWE and AEW with Opening Bell: quick previews of Raw, SmackDown, Dynamite and Rampage.

Welcome to the Opening Bell, where we round up what’s been announced for WWE (Raw and SmackDown) and AEW (Dynamite and Rampage) programming for the week we’ve just begun.

WWE Raw preview – Monday, Oct. 3, Xcel Energy Center, St. Paul, MN

With Extreme Rules beckoning at the end of the week, WWE is pulling out all the stops to drum up that final interest. To wit, there’s a ton advertised for Monday’s Raw in Minnesota — more than usual, for sure.

It’s almost a requirement to have a contract signing for the last Raw before a premium live event, and Bianca Belair and Bayley will have theirs in St. Paul. The champ has been doing a good job of preventing Bayley from living in her head, but will have to stay strong this week ahead of their Ladder Match.

Matt Riddle and Seth Rollins have a feud that’s even more “on sight” than Belair and Bayley, but they’ll also have their face-to-face confrontation on Raw. Because they can’t keep from throwing down when they’re together, WWE says if either man makes contact with each other on Raw, they’re out of their Extreme Rules Fight Pit match. So it’ll be words, not fists, supposedly. And how will the news that UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier is refereeing that match get worked into the mix?

Also on tap for Raw this week:

AEW Dynamite preview – Wednesday, Oct. 5, Entertainment & Sports Arena, Washington D.C.

Perhaps the most exciting thing that’s been revealed about this week’s Dynamite is that it will go an extra 15 minutes. That implies something big, or at the very least a pretty stacked show.

We already know one of the matches will see MJF take on Wheeler Yuta. These two have been going at it since MJF’s return, and though hardly anyone can hang with the self-professed Devil on the mic, Yuta can certainly give him a full night’s work in the ring. Alas, one gets the feeling that The Firm will bail MJF out if he runs into too much trouble.

Another big bout will see Daniel Garcia tag with his idol, Bryan Danielson, to face Chris Jericho and Sammy Guevara. Garcia has been wavering for a while on his Jericho Appreciation Society membership, and after the American Dragon invited him to jump to the Blackpool Combat Club, this could be the chance for him to make a clean break. But you know “The Ocho” will have something to say about that before it’s all said and done in this battle of teams featuring two ROH champions.

Here’s what else has already been promoted for Dynamite:

  • Darby Allin takes on Jay Lethal, who’s promised to leave his entourage behind this time around
  • Luchasaurus will be in action
  • The Acclaimed will get everyone to help celebrate National Scissoring Day, because everybody loves The Acclaimed

WWE SmackDown preview – Friday, Oct. 7, DCU Center, Worcester, Mass.

‘Twas the night before Extreme Rules, and it also happens to be the episode that WWE is promoting as the season premiere of SmackDown. So it’s being headlined by a very big match indeed: the rematch between champion Gunther and challenger Sheamus for the Intercontinental Championship. These two tore the house down the first time around, so fans are pumped for round two.

Solo Sikoa will be in action on Friday as well, taking on Ricochet. Sikoa’s friendship with Sami Zayn has been one of the most pleasant surprises on recent WWE programming, so you can bet Sami will likely be on hand to support Solo for this one.

And because it’s never too early to start promoting the next big premium live event (and because the Tribal Chief isn’t working Extreme Rules), Roman Reigns and Logan Paul will go face to face. Crown Jewel is only a few weeks away, after all.

AEW Rampage preview – Friday, Oct. 7, Entertainment & Sports Arena, Washington D.C.

It’s two shows in three nights for AEW this week in the nation’s capital, with both of them live. Rampage has a special bonus feature this week too: Battle of the Belts IV will take place live immediately after it at 11:00 p.m. ET. That special is expected to have multiple title matches, with the one announced featuring Pac defending his All-Atlantic Championship against Trent Beretta.

As for Rampage proper, we know the Dark Order’s 10 will face off against Andrade El Idolo with some surprisingly big stakes. If 10 loses, he forfeits his mask, but if he wins, Andrade has to leave AEW. Expect Dynamite to add some more spice to this card as well.

AEW Battle of the Belts IV will air Friday, Oct. 7 after Rampage, avoiding Extreme Rules

Battle of the Belts IV will avoid going head to head with WWE in October.

Thus far, the AEW Battle of Belts specials have aired on Saturday nights. That’s about to change in early October, and for good reason.

As hinted at by AEW’s advertising for tickets for next week’s shows and confirmed by Wrestling Observer, AEW Battle of the Belts IV will air after Rampage on TNT on Friday, Oct. 7. That means it will start at 11 p.m. ET and go for an hour, which was also the length of the first three specials.

WWE is holding its Extreme Rules premium live event the next night in Philadelphia, which is likely the cause of the change in nights. AEW also aired two hours of wrestling last Friday, Sept. 23, as part of a special AEW Rampage Grand Slam special episode.

Rampage and Battle of the Belts IV will also air live, which hasn’t always been the case for either show. Perhaps the most interesting part of the whole week is that AEW is also airing Dynamite live from the same venue, the Entertainment and Sports Arena (that’s seriously its name) in Washington D.C., two days prior. It’s asking a lot for fans to attend two shows two nights apart, though AEW has done it before (often in the lead-up to a pay-per-view, like when it spent the whole week in Las Vegas culminating in Double or Nothing) and is offering combo ticket deals to those interested in going Wednesday and Friday.

No matches have been announced yet for Battle of the Belts IV, but that should change during this week’s AEW programming. All three previous specials have featured three title matches apiece, always including the AEW Women’s World Championship (meaning Toni Storm should be preparing to wrestle) but interestingly never including the AEW World Championship.

AEW Battle of the Belts III results: 3 titles on the line

Read full results for AEW Battle of the Belts III on Aug. 6, 2022, with three championship matches on the card.

Hey there! You know what’s great after an entertaining week of pro wrestling? Even more wrestling, that’s what. AEW is obliging us with Battle of the Belts III, its quarterly card that features nothing but title matches.

All three bouts on this particular show should be fun. Wardlow puts his TNT Championship on the line against Jay Lethal, who’s on a bit of a roll as of late. Thunder Rosa, a fighting champion as always, may have her hands full with Jamie Hayter.

(As a side note, how jealous would Britt Baker be if Hayter actually wins?)

And ROH World Champion Claudio Castagnoli should get a stiff test from everyone’s favorite overseas import Konosuke Takeshita. A hard-hitting affair? We should say so.

All this on free TV, what could be better? Yet it’s on Saturday night, and we’re well aware that unlike us, some of you have social lives. But we’re here recapping it for you, so whether you check this article out live on Saturday or sometime down the road, we’ll have all the details.

AEW Battle of the Belts 3 results in 30 seconds:

  • Wardlow def. Jay Lethal by pinfall to retain his TNT Championship, but gets attacked after the bell and driven through a table by Satnam Singh
  • Jamie Hayter vs. Thunder Rosa – AEW Women’s World Championship Match
