Recap: Auburn loses second straight in Starkville

The Auburn Tigers lost their second straight SEC game on Saturday, losing in disappointing fashion to the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

The Plains weren’t the only thing that looked flat in Auburn on Saturday.

[autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag] and the No. 6 Auburn Tigers barely showed up for their seventh SEC tilt against Mississippi State, losing 64-58 to the Bulldogs.

The Tigers shot just 35% from the field in the game.

Forward [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] was efficient but overall not very productive on an afternoon where his team desperately needed him, as the junior finished with a team-high 14 points on just 7 attempts from the field.

Auburn’s backcourt struggled once again on the road, as [autotag]Trae Donaldson[/autotag], [autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag], and [autotag]K.D Johnson[/autotag] combined for just 13 points in the contest.

Mississippi State came into the game with a ferocious defense, especially at home, but Auburn’s inability to score the basketball for the second straight road came is definitely cause for concern.

As for Mississippi State, star forward Tolu Smith arguably outplayed Broome in this game. The senior not only shut down Broome on the defensive end, but also contributed 9 points and 8 rebounds in the game. He was a key cog in the Bulldogs defensive stand to hold off Auburn’s comeback attempt as well. Smith also helped Mississippi State out-rebound Auburn by 15 in the game.

Auburn’s second-straight loss drops the Tigers to 5-2 in SEC play. They’ll go back to the drawing board before returning to Neville Arena to host Vanderbilt on Wednesday.

Recap: Auburn’s comeback attempt falls short against Alabama

Recap: Auburn’s comeback attempt falls short against Alabama

It is extremely difficult to win college basketball games on the road. It is even more difficult to do that in the SEC, especially against a rival.

The Auburn Tigers learned that fact the hard way on Wednesday night, falling to Alabama in Tuscaloosa, 79-75, for their first SEC loss of the season.

Auburn, much like the lighting inside of Coleman Coliseum, came out flat out of the gates in this one.

After jumping out to a very early lead, the Tigers struggled to do anything well on offense or defense for most of the first half.

Crimson Tide guards were seeing wide baskets throughout the half leading to a 47% mark from 3-point range, while Auburn’s perimeter players were trying to shoot a metaphorical bowling ball into a keyhole.

The Tigers entered the locker room trailing 44-30, but came out furiously in the second half, cutting the Alabama lead to just six within the first five minutes.

Star forward [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] was the major reason why. Broome collected a third of Auburn’s 75 points on the night, grabbing 14 rebounds in the losing effort as well.

Broome’s tenacity paired with timely shots from [autotag]Trae Donaldson[/autotag], [autotag]Chad Baker-Mazara[/autotag], and [autotag]Denver Jones[/autotag] kept Auburn’s hopes alive until the very end, but the halftime deficit was ultimately too much to overcome.

[autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag]’s squad fell 79-75 in the end. The loss is Auburn’s first since December 3 against Appalachian State.

While the loss is discouraging for a team that was working on the fourth-longest winning streak in Divison 1, there were some good things the Tigers can take away from Tuscaloosa.

Auburn shot better as a team in the game, converting on 42% of its field goals compared to Alabama’s 38% mark.

The Tigers also won the turnover battle, collecting more steals and more blocks than the Tide.

Unfortunately, Auburn’s downfall came in the 3-point department, from the free throw line, and on the offensive glass.

Freshman guard [autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag] didn’t connect on a single 3-point attempt in the game, contributing to a 5/25 mark overall. Meanwhile, Alabama connected on 11 of its 30 3-point attempts.

Nate Oats’ team also out-rebounded Auburn by 5 and made 2 more free throw attempts. In a close game, those margins matter.

Auburn will have a few days to take in the loss before the Tigers wrap up their week in Starkville on Saturday against Mississippi State.

As for Alabama, the Tide have an opportunity to take control of the SEC when they host a mediocre LSU team on Saturday.

Aden Holloway named a ‘freshman to watch’ by On3

Auburn has won nine-straight games, and Aden Holloway is a key reason why.

The Auburn Tigers are currently riding a nine-game win streak and freshman [autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag] is a key reason why.

The guard from Charlotte, North Carolina averages 10.1 points and 3.4 assists per game. In conference play, he averages eight points per game. He scored 13 in Auburn’s most recent win, a 93-78 decision over LSU at Neville Arena.

He was highly touted coming into the season and has lived up to the hype to this point. He has caught the attention of On3’s Jamie Shaw, who has included Holloway in his “Power 6 Freshmen to Watch” list.

Shaw points out Holloway’s inconsistencies but says that his assist-to-turnover ratio is among the best in the country.

While his shooting and scoring numbers have been up and down, where Aden Holloway has shined is with his assists-to-turnover ratio. The 6-foot-1 freshman’s 3.71 assists-to-turnover number makes him 13th overall in Division 1 and the top freshman to date.

Notre Dame‘s Markus Burton, Florida‘s Alex Condon, and Oregon‘s Kwame Evans join Holloway on Shaw’s list. Holloway and the Tigers return to the court on Wednesday at 8 p.m. CT when they pay a visit to Nashville to face the Vanderbilt Commodores.

Everything Bruce Pearl and Auburn’s players said after beating LSU

Here is everything Bruce Pearl, Aden Holloway and Chad Baker-Mazara had to say after beating LSU.

It wasn’t perfect, but Auburn picked up another double-digit win on Saturday night, beating LSU 93-78 in Neville Arena.

It was a game of two halves for Auburn, they dominated the first half, going into halftime up 51-34 and stretched the lead to 28 in the second half. However, LSU wasn’t going to go down without a fight and went on a 21-2 run to cut it to a nine-point deficit.

Like he did all game, [autotag]Chad Baker-Mazara[/autotag] stepped up for the Tigers, drilling a three-pointer to get the lead back to 12 and get the momentum back on Auburn’s side. He scored a season-high 19 points to lead all scorers and added six steals in a complete game effort.

[autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag], Bazer-Mazara and [autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag] spoke with the media after the game, here is everything they said.

Recap: Auburn cruises past LSU for third straight SEC win

Recap: Auburn cruises past LSU for third straight SEC win

The Auburn Tigers are a wagon.

Bruce Pearl’s squad won again on Saturday night, toppling the LSU Tigers 93-78 in a game that was never truly close.

Auburn’s defense wreaked havoc on the LSU backcourt all night, forcing Jordan Wright and company to commit 17 turnovers, 16 of which were live-ball giveaways.

Those LSU mistakes led to easy offense on the other end for Auburn. The Tigers’ 93 points were the most they had scored in conference play and third most of the season.

Guards [autotag]Chad Baker-Mazara[/autotag], [autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag], and forward [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] led the way in the scoring department, combining for 50 of Auburn’s 97 points in the contest.

Baker-Mazara’s 19 led all scorers. The transfer guard finished one point ahead of Broome and LSU guards Jordan Wright and Trae Hannibal.

Wright and Hannibal were both efficient for LSU in a game in which the team shot over 42% from the field and 39% from 3-point range.

LSU’s issue wasn’t putting the ball in the basket in Neville Arena. It was everything they did before shooting the basketball.

The Jungle clearly had an impact on the game tonight. Auburn’s home-court advantage has become one of the best in college basketball and should help the Tigers climb up both the AP and Coaches Polls as the season progresses.

Unfortunately for the Tigers, they’ll have to leave home on Wednesday for a contest against Vanderbilt in Nashville.

Fortunately for Auburn, Vanderbilt is one of the worst teams in the SEC.

As for LSU, the Tigers return home on Wednesday for a home matchup against a solid Ole Miss team.

Recap: Auburn wins big again, takes down Arkansas 83-51

Recap: Auburn wins big again, takes down Arkansas 83-51

The Auburn Tigers are an elite basketball team.

Bruce Pearl’s squad dismantled an above-average Arkansas team on Saturday afternoon, pulling away late in the first half and never looking back.

The Tigers rebounded from a poor offensive start to finish with above 80 points for the seventh consecutive game, while the defense was again elite, holding Arkansas to just 51 points in the contest.

The 32-point margin of victory was the biggest margin of defeat for the Razorbacks in Bud Walton Arena history

Guard [autotag]Chad Baker-Mazara[/autotag] was the star of the day for the Tigers, scoring 16 points on an efficient 5/9 from the field. The junior added 4 rebounds and 3 assists.

Tre Donaldson was also incredible off the bench, missing only one shot all day in an 11-point, 7-rebound, and 4-assist performance.

Bruce Pearl played 9 other Tigers in the win. Forwards [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] and [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag] were effective once again, while [autotag]K.D Johnson[/autotag], [autotag]Dylan Cardwell[/autotag], [autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag], and [autotag]Chaney Johnson[/autotag] all contributed 5 points or more.

The Tigers shot 49% from the field and 39% from 3-point range in total. Both numbers are extremely impressive on the road, but the 16-7 assist-to-turnover ratio was the standout statistic of the day.

As for the Razorbacks, a gritty Auburn defense paired with a horrific shooting afternoon spelled disaster for the Hogs.

Arkansas shot an abysmal 31% from the field and was nearly identical from point range, connecting on just 7 of 24 shots from deep.

Guards Khalif Battle, Davonte Davis, and Tramon mark combined for just 16 points on 4/16 from the field.

Auburn’s 32-point was easily its most impressive of the season. The Tigers are a lock to move up in the Coaches and AP Polls after this week, and are an early team to beat in the SEC.

Bruce Pearl’s team can enjoy a few days off before they return to Neville Arena to take on the Texas A&M Aggies.

As for Arkansas, the loss knocks them down to 9-6 on the season before traveling to UGA on Wednesday.

Recap: Auburn blows out Penn, heads into SEC play 11-2

Auburn blows out Penn, heads into SEC play 11-2

The Auburn Tigers won another game by 20+ points on Tuesday night, blowing out the Penn Quakers 88-68 at Neville Arena.

This game was never in doubt, as superstar forward [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] connected on two early 3-point shots to lead the Tigers to an 11-2 start.

From there, Auburn took a page out of the Quakers playbook, sharing the wealth in another all-around great offensive effort. Guards [autotag]Denver Jones[/autotag], [autotag]Chad Baker-Mazara [/autotag]and [autotag]Tre Donaldson[/autotag] bombarded Penn from deep all night, combining for 34 points.

Freshmen guard [autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag] struggled from the field again but he was able to improve on his Division 1-best freshmen assist-to-turnover ratio by dishing out 6 more dimes while only committing a single giveaway.

Head coach [autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag]’s rotation did cool down after the halftime break, but Auburn’s lead was never in serious jeopardy in the victory.

While the offensive clinic was once again great to see, this Auburn team is going to go as far as their impressively stout defense takes them.

The Tigers’ ability to switch on ball screens and drives once again created issues for the opposing offense. Star Quakers freshmen Tyler Perkins was able to get to his season average of 13 points, but he did it on an inefficient 5/16 from the field.

More importantly, Perkins shot 0/6 in a second half that saw Penn get as close as 11 points.

Perkins is obviously not as talented as the likes of Antonio Reeves at Kentucky or Dalton Knecht at Tennessee, but the trend of opposing guards struggling with efficiency is something to keep an eye on heading into a guard-dominant SEC conference.

As for that SEC schedule, Auburn’s win streak will be tested right away when they travel to Fayetteville to take on Arkansas on January 6.

Penn also opens up conference play on January 6 when they host Dartmouth.

Recap: Auburn notches another blowout victory over Alabama State

Auburn notches another blowout victory over Alabama State

Auburn continues to play terrific team basketball.

[autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] and [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag] led a scorching hot Tigers’ offense to a fourth-straight 80-plus point game on Friday Night, as Auburn once again secured a double-digit victory at Neville Arena, 82-62.

[autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag]’s squad is now 9-2 in the non-conference schedule and has made yet another case of earning a top-25 spot in the upcoming USA Today Coaches Poll.

The aforementioned duo of Broome and Williams combined for 36 of Auburn’s 82 points in the win over the Alabama State Hornets.

Guard [autotag]K.D Johnson[/autotag] contributed 13 points in 16 minutes off the bench, landing as the only other Tiger in double-figures. The senior also had 2 steals on the defensive end.

Despite shooting 25% from the 3-point line, the “Orange and Blue” shot 46% from the field overall and made great use of their 32 free-throw attempts, sinking 26 of them.

It is also worth noting freshmen [autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag] and sophomore [autotag]Tre Donaldson[/autotag] had a successful game splitting point guard duties.

Holloway finished with 6 points and 4 assists in 19 minutes on the floor, while Donaldson filled up the stat sheet with a 6-point, 4-assist, and 3-rebound performance across 20 minutes of playing time.

As for Alabama State, the Hornets are now 4-7 on the season, although 6 of those losses have come against high major competition.

Head coach Tony Madlock does have some things to be confident about heading into SWAC play. His talented backcourt of TJ Madlock and Isiah Range combined for 32 points in the loss which is slightly above their season average of 29.

The 32 points were impressive given Auburn’s early-season ability to wreak havoc on the defensive end. This is the seventh time in 11 games this season an Auburn opponent has scored under 65 points. The Tigers have an 21-point average margin of victory in those contests.

Auburn will enjoy an 8-day Holiday break before returning to action to host a pair of solid mid major programs.

The Tigers return to Neville Arena to host the Chattanooga Mocs on December 30 before opening 2024 against the Penn Quakers on January 2.

A grueling SEC schedule awaits after that.

Recap: Auburn takes down Bronny James and USC for eighth win of season

Recap: Auburn takes down Bronny James and USC for eighth win of season

The Auburn Tigers put on a show at Neville Arena on Sunday, blowing out Power 5 opponent USC 91-75.

Bruce Pearl’s team scored over 85 points for the third straight contest, once again getting contributions from multiple players.

Starters [autotag]Jaylin Williams,[/autotag], [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag], [autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag], and [autotag]Denver Jones[/autotag] all managed double-figures in the win.

The quartet contributed 52 of Auburn’s 91 points in the game.

While the scoring was a bright spot again, Auburn’s defense behind “The Jungle” at Neville Arena was the real story.

The Trojans backcourt of Boogie Ellis and Isiah Collier was solid but Andy Enfield’s team didn’t get much production from anyone outside of their two star guards.

USC shot just 40% as a team on the road, connecting on 6/19 3-point attempts. The Trojans also turned the ball over 15 times, letting the Tigers’ defense rack up 9 total steals.

Center [autotag]Dylan Cardwell[/autotag] was the leader of a pest-like Tigers’ defense on Sunday afternoon. The senior played only 17 minutes but managed to cause more disruption than a Tiger let loose in a petting zoo, collecting 2 blocks and 3 steals in the blowout win.

Auburn seemingly has found their groove over the last three games of the season. Bruce Pearl and company will hope to stay hot to close out 2023 before the SEC schedule kicks off when the calendar turns to 2024.

As for USC, the Trojans have fallen to 5-5 on the season and 0-2 since the return of guard Bronny James.

Social media reacts to Auburn crushing USC

Auburn took care of USC Sunday and the fans took to social media to celebrate.

The Auburn Tigers picked up their third straight double-digit win on Sunday, beating USC 91-75 inside of an electric Neville Arena.

The Tigers led for the final 36 minutes of the game and once again showcased their depth and ability to win in multiple ways. Five different Tigers scored in double figures and 11 scored overall.

[autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag] won the battle against USC point guard [autotag]Isaiah Collier[/autotag], scoring a team-high 15 points and dishing out six assists, tying his career-high. He was once again money from behind the arc, going 4-of-7.

The dominant win fired up the Auburn fanbase, which took to social media to celebrate the 8th win of the season. Here is a look at the top reactions.
