Packers still need to add ‘a guy or two’ at offensive tackle

Packers OC Adam Stenavich admitted the team needs to add a player or two at offensive tackle this offseason.

Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich said he likes the depth of the offensive line entering the draft but also admitted he’d like the team to add another player or two at offensive tackle this offseason.

“On the edges, we need a guy or two, just to really shore up the tackle position,” Stenavich said Tuesday.

The Packers lost Billy Turner, and veteran Dennis Kelly remains unsigned. Elgton Jenkins, a potential starter at right tackle, is still recovering from his season-ending knee injury.

David Bakhtiari will return to man the left tackle position, but there is no obvious starter at right tackle entering 2022.

The Packers brought back Yosh Nijman as an exclusive rights free agent, and 2021 draft picks Royce Newman and Cole Van Lanen are both listed on the roster as tackle-guards, although both played primarily as guards as rookies.

“I really like our young guys. They are all tough, all intelligent, all made of the right stuff. So it’s going to be really fun to see how this develops. I’m excited about our depth,” Stenavich said.

Nijman, who made eight starts and played almost 600 total snaps last season, is one big part of the puzzle. Stenavich said he’ll get a chance to play left and right tackle moving forward, making him the team’s preferred swing tackle and potential starter at right tackle until Jenkins is back.

The Packers picked Turner and Kelly as the starting tackle duo in the postseason, leaving Nijman on the bench. Stenavich said it was his call.

Nijman’s next challenge? Proving he can be a full-time starter.

“Just to take the next step forward, to see if we can count on him to be a reliable starter,” Stenavich said.

The Packers will attempt to replace Turner, who played left and right tackle and was a key member of the offensive line over the last three seasons. Kelly is unsigned and could still return, but using a draft pick on a developmental offensive tackle might be required.

Dane Brugler of The Athletic lists nine offensive tackles in his top 100 players in the draft class, and the Packers are entering the draft possessing five selections into the top 100. The franchise has also had success drafting versatile and athletic offensive linemen on Day 3 of the draft.

Given Stenavich’s comments, signing a veteran tackle and using at least one draft pick at the position looks likely for the Packers before training camp.

Packers promoting Adam Stenavich to offensive coordinator

The Packers are promoting offensive line coach and run game coordinator Adam Stenavich to offensive coordinator.

The Green Bay Packers are promoting from within to replace Nathaniel Hackett. According to Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Packers will promote offensive line coach Adam Stenavich to offensive coordinator.

Hackett left to become the new head coach of the Denver Broncos. Packers coach Matt LaFleur preferred to promote a coach already on staff if Hackett got a job elsewhere.

The pick was Stenavich, who has been LaFleur’s offensive line coach since 2019. He was promoted to run game coordinator before the 2020 season and has been a pivotal part of the Packers success on offense, especially during an injury-plagued 2021 season.

With Stenavich staying to replace Hackett, quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Luke Getsy is expected to move on, possibly becoming the new offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears. He would get an opportunity to call plays in Chicago.

With Stenavich getting a promotion, assistant offensive line coach Luke Butkus could become the new offensive line coach.

According to Rapoport, Packers tight ends coach Justin Outten is a top candidate to depart to be the offensive coordinator in Denver. It’s clear Hackett wants someone from the staff in Green Bay to come along with him.

Receivers coach Jason Vrable is a candidate to replace Getsy as the passing game coordinator.

The Packers will announce all the coaching changes on LaFleur’s staff in the coming weeks once everything is finalized.

Nathaniel Hackett’s Broncos want to talk to Packers OL coach Adam Stenavich about OC job

Nathaniel Hackett and the Broncos want to talk with Packers OL coach Adam Stenavich about Denver’s offensive coordinator job.

Nathaniel Hackett might not be the only prominent offensive coach for the Green Bay Packers to leave for Denver. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Hackett and the Broncos want to interview Packers offensive line coach and run game coordinator Adam Stenavich for the team’s open offensive coordinator job.

Hackett, the Packers offensive coordinator for the last three seasons, is finalizing a deal to become the new head coach of the Broncos.

Stenavich has been Green Bay’s offensive line coach under Matt LaFleur since 2019. A Marshfield, Wisconsin native, Stenavich played at Michigan before a short career in the NFL, including a stop with the Packers. He was the San Francisco 49ers assistant offensive line coach for two seasons (2017-18) before arriving in Green Bay on LaFleur’s first staff.

Stenavich has done a terrific job developing the offensive line for the Packers. LaFleur promoted him to run game coordinator in 2021. This past season, he helped the Packers survive an avalanche of injuries along the offensive line.

If Stenavich leaves with Hackett for Denver, quarterbacks coach and pass game coordinator Luke Getsy would be the overwhelming favorite to become LaFleur’s new offensive coordinator, replacing Hackett. And assistant offensive line coach Luke Butkus would be a logical replacement for Stenavich.

LaFleur is a great coach, but coaching a football team is a collaborative effort, and losing both Hackett and Stenavich would be a big blow to the Packers offense in 2022.

There’s also the allure of the Broncos having two top offensive coaches on staff in Denver for Aaron Rodgers, who needs to make a decision on his football future in the coming weeks. Moving on and starting over in Denver with Hackett and Stenavich would likely be an attractive option.

According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, Ejiro Evero is a top candidate to be the Broncos defensive coordinator. He was a finalist for the job in Green Bay this past offseason. LaFleur picked Joe Barry.

Packers expect to promote from within to replace Nathaniel Hackett

Luke Getsy and Adam Stenavich have to be considered the favorites to replace Nathaniel Hackett as the Packers offensive coordinator.

The Green Bay Packers are expecting to promote from within to replace offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, who is finalizing a deal to become the new head coach of the Denver Broncos, per NFL Network.

Coach Matt LaFleur said the Packers would “absolutely” look to promote a coach already on staff to offensive coordinator if Hackett departed. And now it appears Hackett is headed to Denver to take over his own team.

LaFleur now must decide which coach on staff is best for the job.

“We have a lot of confidence in the guys we have on our staff. We have so many good guys. It’s not going to be an easy decision, let me tell you that,” LaFleur said.

Quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Luke Getsy and offensive line coach and run game coordinator Adam Stenavich appear to be prime candidates. Getsy has been an offensive coordinator in the past and has interviewed for open coordinator jobs this coaching cycle, while Stenavich is a rising star in the business and has done a terrific job handling the offensive line during his first three seasons in Green Bay.

It’s certainly possible Hackett will attempt to bring Getsy or Stenavich along with him to Denver, which could complicate the process for LaFleur and the Packers.

LaFleur said the Packers already had a plan in place in case Hackett got a job, so the process of identifying and promoting the new coordinator shouldn’t take long.

Hackett was a strong and positive personality in the Packers offensive coaching staff. He worked alongside LaFleur to build the plan, especially in the red zone.
