Around the horn: Gavin Grant’s walk-off homer gives Oregon a 3-2 win over UCSB

Oregon’s Gavin Grant sent Duck fans home happy with a walk-off homer to give Oregon a 3-2 win over UCSB.

Neither team deserved to lose this one.

Oregon and UC-Santa Barbara battled for eight and a half innings until Gavin Grant had enough. The Ducks second baseman belted the first pitch of the bottom of the ninth over the left-field wall and Oregon walked off with a 3-2 win over the Gauchos.

UCSB’s starting pitcher Cory Lewis shut the Ducks down for six innings and Oregon starter Adam Maier went five strong innings. But in the end, it took just one swing of the bat to give the Ducks their sixth straight victory.

It looked bleak in the top of the ninth as the Gauchos managed to have runners on first and third with no out. Fortunately, Oregon closer Kolby Somers proceeded to strike out the next three Gauchos.

Oregon will now try and make it seven or maybe eight straight as the Ducks and Gauchos will play a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.

Around the horn: Ducks tie program record for runs scored in rout of St. John’s

The Ducks tied a school record for runs scored as they crushed St. John’s 23-5 in the 2022 home opener.

Everyone was wondering how the newly renovated PK Park would play as compared to previous seasons.

In the home opener, the Oregon Ducks showed the 13-year old stadium might be a hitter’s park now.

It’s only one game, but Oregon tied a program record of 23 runs in a massive 23-5 rout over St. John’s. It’s the Ducks second consecutive game of scoring 20 or more and are now 2-3 on the early season.

Brennan Milone and Drew Cowley each homered and Colby Shade went 2-for-5 with three runs driven in.

Meanwhile, on the mound, starter Adam Maier had a nice rebound game after a rough season opener. Maier went 5.1 innings, giving up four runs and six hits while striking out five.

These two teams will meet up again Saturday afternoon for Game 2 of the four-game series.

Around the Horn: Opening night jitters doom Ducks in 11-1 loss to San Diego

The 2022 Oregon Ducks baseball season opener didn’t go as planned with San Diego coming out on top 11-1.

The college baseball season isn’t a marathon, but it’s not a sprint either. So losing on opening night isn’t the worst thing that will happen to the Oregon baseball team this season.

But lose they did as Friday night starter Adam Maier showed some butterflies on the mound, allowing a two-run homer to the second hitter of the game and San Diego cruised from there to win 11-1.

Maier settled down to get through the fifth inning, but the Toreros blew the game wide open with seven insurance runs in the seventh.

Thankfully for Oregon, it’s just one game, and the Ducks can come right back tomorrow and try for their first victory of the season.
