Jim Harbaugh didn’t just completely revamp the defensive side of the ball in terms of the coaching staff this offseason, but in addition to adding two new coaches on offense, the behind-the-scenes staff has seen radical changes, as well.
Not only have several grad assistants moved, as have many analysts, but those who work in some of the most crucial departments have changed, too.
It started when Matt Dudek, the director of recruiting, announced he was taking the same job at Mississippi State. The rumors were that Courtney Morgan would be coming in for the same role, but he ended up taking the Director of Player Personnel role that was previously filled by Mark Taurisani — who reunited with Bret Bielema at Illinois. On Sunday, we got more clarity as to who will actually be filling Dudek’s role, and it’s someone who’s already been on the staff.
Aashon Larkins came aboard as a defensive analyst last season, after having served as the director of recruiting at Bethune-Cookman. With Bob Shoop being on leave throughout the year, Larkins ended up working with the safeties. But, according to his Twitter profile, he’s Michigan’s newest director of recruiting.
Additionally, according to MLive’s Aaron McMann, Jerret McElwain — son of former wide receivers coach Jim McElwain — has been named the team’s director of scouting.
An update on this. A Michigan spokesman tells @MLive that Aashon Larkins' new role is part of a restructuring within the football program. Jerret McElwain, on staff since '18, is now director of scouting. https://t.co/5v7Od7c75l

The latter move signifies that the Wolverines recruiting department may be growing compared to the previous regime.
