Robert Saleh declines to offer insight on potential Aaron Rodgers return

Robert Saleh declines to offer insight on potential Aaron Rodgers return

The deadline for the Jets to activate quarterback Aaron Rodgers from injured reserve is quickly approaching. The team has until Wednesday to decide if they are going to bring Rodgers back to the 53-man roster. Wednesday is the last day of the 21-day practice window the Jets opened on November 29 for Rodgers. If the Jets do not activate Rodgers by Wednesday, he will remain on injured reserve for the rest of the season.

Saleh was asked about Rodgers potentially coming back this week but did not offer much insight, perhaps keeping things close to the vest.

“I don’t have anything for you guys on that one right now,” Saleh said. “Like I said, as far as I’m concerned, he’s still in rehab.”

Saleh said he wants to wait until a conversation with doctors happens regarding the next step with Rodgers and if he will be activated this week.

“We’ve got to meet with his doctors and see if there’s actual clearance on their part, there’s got to be clearance on our doctors’ parts, so there’s a lot of steps there. And then obviously, there has to be a discussion with Aaron in terms of what the next step would be and the comfort level of everybody on board, so it’s not something that’s made in a vacuum, but all the right conversations would be had.”

Rodgers has been practicing off and on since the Jets opened his window the week after Thanksgiving. His schedule was part of the rehabilitation process. Rodgers is hoping to ramp up his practice habits at some points. If he is activated, the Jets could choose to do just that with the potential of him playing either Sunday against the Washington Commanders or the following Thursday against the Cleveland Browns.

Of course, there is one major monkey wrench that was thrown into the plans: the Jets were eliminated from playoff contention after their 30-0 loss to the Miami Dolphins coupled with wins by the Browns and Houston Texans. Rodgers has said on a number of occasions that the Jets’ playoff chances would play a factor in him returning this season. With the percent chance now zero, will that mean Rodgers’ plans to return are now zero percent? That answer should be revealed in the next few days. Wednesday will be very telling.

Jets opening 21-day practice window for Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers is returning to the practice field as the Jets opened his 21-day practice window Wednesday.

Aaron Rodgers may very well be on his way back. Potentially, at least. Head coach Robert Saleh announced Wednesday the team is opening the 21-day practice window for the quarterback.

By opening the window now, Rodgers is able to return to practice but will do so on a very limited basis. The Jets now have until December 20 to officially activate Rodgers from injured reserve. If not, similar to if the team wouldn’t have activated Duane Brown by Thanksgiving, Rodgers will officially be done for the season as he will remain on injured reserve the rest of the way.

Saleh said Rodgers “has been cleared for functional football activity.” He also added: “Aaron is not going to do anything that puts him in harm’s way.” Rodgers has not been cleared for contact. This is a progression in his rehab, Saleh noted.

Saleh also mad it clear any decision on Rodgers will not be made until the end of the practice window, indicating the earliest he’ll return to game action would be December 24 against the Washington Commanders, which had seemed like the target for some time now.

It’s a testament to Rodgers’ rehabilitation and surgical procedure with the speed bridge that the Jets were even able to open his practice window just 11 weeks after the injury. Rodgers turns 40 Saturday.

The Jets also opened the practice windows for special-teams captain Justin Hardee and offensive lineman Wes Schweitzer.

What Aaron Rodgers’ season-ending injury means for Packers

Aaron Rodgers’ season with the Jets is over after four plays. Here’s what it means for the Packers and the 2024 draft.

Imaging done Tuesday morning confirmed what many suspected Monday night: New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers — who spent his first 18 seasons in Green Bay — will miss the rest of the 2023 season after suffering a complete tear of his Achilles tendon on the fourth play from scrimmage of Week 1, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

The news is devastating for Rodgers, who turns 40 years old in December and was revitalized as a newcomer for the up-and-coming Jets. His football future is now exceedingly unclear. The news is similarly devastating for the Jets, who poured resources into this season believing Rodgers’ arrival provided a legitimate chance to make a Super Bowl run.

The Packers are also affected by the injury, although for much less pressing reasons.

In the blockbuster trade that sent Rodgers from Green Bay to New York, the Packers and Jets agreed on a conditional 2024 draft pick included the deal. If Rodgers played 65 percent or more of the offense’s snaps in 2023, the pick would be a first-rounder. If he played fewer than 65 percent, the pick would be a second-rounder.

Rodgers played all of four plays. The pick coming to Green Bay will be a second-rounder in the 2024 draft.

In a best case scenario for the Packers, Rodgers would have played most of the season for a poor team, resulting in a high first-round pick. While the Jets — despite a Week 1 win over the Bills — will likely struggle without Rodgers, the pick can now no longer be higher than No. 33 overall. More than likely, the pick coming to the Packers in the 2024 draft will be in the No. 40ish range.

The end result of the trade will be the Packers getting a pick swap in the first round of the 2023 draft (No. 15 to No. 13, which became Lukas Van Ness), a second-round pick (which became Luke Musgrave), a sixth-round pick (which became Anders Carlson) and a 2024 second-round pick for four plays of Rodgers in 2023 (possibly more in 2024 and beyond) and a 2023 fifth-round pick (which was involved in a trade down).

It’s unclear if the injury means the end of Rodgers’ decorated NFL career. He has talked recently about wanting to play several years with the Jets, but such a significant injury to his lower body might force a recalibration. Earlier this year, Rodgers said he was close to retirement while comtemplating his future during a darkness retreat.

Keep in mind, the Packers 2024 schedule features a game against a to-be-determined AFC East opponent at Lambeau Field. If the Packers and Jets finish in the same place in their respective divisions in 2023, Rodgers could return to Green Bay. But the future Hall of Famer now faces a long, difficult recovery before playing football again.

If Rodgers retires following this season, he would be eligible for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2028.

MRI confirms complete Achilles tear for Aaron Rodgers

The worst news has been confirmed. Aaron Rodgers’ season is over.

The worst fears have officially been confirmed for the New York Jets. Aaron Rodgers suffered a complete tear of his Achilles Monday night. The MRI Tuesday morning confirmed the news.

The injury happened on the fourth offensive play of the night for the Jets. Rodgers couldn’t stand up after taking a sack from Bills defensive end Leonard Floyd and had to be helped off the field by trainers. He went for X-rays after a stop in the blue medical tent on the sideline which came back negative.

The team has feared this would be the case for Rodgers. Head coach Robert Saleh didn’t beat around the bush after the game. He said the injury didn’t look good. As it turns out, it was not good.

So barring the Jets bringing in a veteran option, it’s back to Zach Wilson, who went 14/21 for 140 yards, one touchdown and an interception in New York’s 22-16 win over Buffalo.

All the excitement for the season turned to concern and question marks in a matter of moments early in the first quarter. Rodgers is out, Wilson is in.

Jets believe Aaron Rodgers suffered torn Achilles Monday, Zach Wilson ‘the guy’

Absolutely unfortunate news on Aaron Rodgers.

The worst fears may be coming true for Jets fans. Aaron Rodgers looks to be lost for the season after just four plays. The ankle injury that Rodgers was initially diagnosed with when he was labeled questionable to return may in fact be an Achilles tear. That’s what head coach Robert Saleh told reporters after New York’s emotional 22-16 overtime win over the Buffalo Bills Monday.

“MRI is going to confirm what we think is already going to happen,” Saleh said after the game. “But it’s not good.” Rodgers will undergo the MRI Tuesday but it looks like the worst is already realized. There is no optimism from the team that Rodgers avoided a major injury.

So after all that, the Jets are right back to where they were, with Zach Wilson as the starting quarterback. “Yeah, he’ll be the guy,” Saleh said when asked if Wilson will be the quarterback moving forward.

The Jets spent all offseason trying to upgrade the quarterback position, from Rodgers to Derek Carr to Matthew Stafford. And in a matter of five game minutes, they are back to the former No. 2 overall pick. The hope is that, between his work in the preseason and in leading the charge Monday night, Wilson has regained his confidence and can keep the ship afloat for the Jets.

Wilson went 14/21 for 140 yards with a touchdown and an interception in the 22-16 win Monday night. He’ll now be the guy and he has an immense challenge coming up. Their Week 2 opponent, the Dallas Cowboys, completely throttled the New York Giants on Sunday night 40-0.

The Jets already had a daunting task ahead of them to begin the season. Games against the Cowboys, Patriots, Chiefs, Broncos and Eagles were going to be tough with Rodgers under center. They just became even more challenging with Wilson under center.

The Jets are 1-0 after an emotional win over Buffalo. But it appears it came at the ultimate price. The very small silver lining is that the Jets will now get to keep their first-round pick in 2024. They will send a second-round pick to Green Bay. The condition on the pick was Rodgers had to play 65% of the offensive snaps for the pick to turn into a first. That obviously will not happen now. But now the Jets have to go without Rodgers, so it’s a major double-edged sword.

Bottom line, it’s all on Wilson now and the Jets have to rally around him. They don’t have much of a choice.

Aaron Rodgers to have MRI on ankle Tuesday

Aaron Rodgers to have MRI on ankle Tuesday

Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers will have an MRI on his injured ankle on Tuesday, per Jordan Schultz.

Rodgers had X-rays on his ankle in the locker room and they came back negative. He left the room in a walking boot but remains in the building. Jets fans will be holding their breath all day Tuesday awaiting the results of the MRI as their season truly could hinge on what happens there.

Rodgers suffered the injury on the Jets’ fourth offensive play after a sack from Bills edge Leonard Floyd. He was helped off the field by trainers and taken to the blue medical tent. He then was carted to the locker room for X-rays.

Tuesday is now an extremely important day for the 2023 New York Jets.

Aaron Rodgers officially ruled out with ankle injury, X-rays negative

X-rays negative for Aaron Rodgers.

The Jets have officially ruled out quarterback Aaron Rodgers with an ankle injury. Rodgers injured his ankle early in the first quarter after a sack from Bills defensive end Leonard Floyd. He was taken to the blue medical tent and then carted to the locker room.

He left the X-ray room and remained with a boot on his foot. The good news is that the X-rays were negative, but his day is done. Zach Wilson is in at quarterback. As a reminder, only Rodgers and Wilson were on the active roster. Tim Boyle is still on the practice squad.

The hope is that the injury is not serious, especially considering it was his ankle and X-rays were negative. We’ll update as more news becomes available.
