Strangers tried to help Pernell Whitaker after he was struck by a car, according a 911 recording obtained by TMZ Sports.
The Hall of Famer was hit crossing a street in Virginia Beach, Virginia on July 14, after which a woman on the scene called for emergency help and reportedly tried to recruit others in the area to help Whitaker.
“He is on the ground right now,” the woman tells the 911 operator. … “I’m not sure if he is alive.”
After she is asked whether she would administer CPR: “He’s not alive. OK, we have to roll him over. I want to do it.”
“Oh, there’s a lot of blood!” she says. A man on the audio adds, “There’s a whole bunch of f—ing blood.”
The woman, evidently still determined to administer CPR, then says, “OK, let’s do it. Come on. Let’s just try it … if there’s any way we can help him.”
Paramedics soon arrived and pronounced Whitaker dead at the scene. He was 55.
