5 things to watch during Packers’ preseason finale vs. Chiefs

Five things to watch during the Packers’ preseason finale vs. the Chiefs on Thursday night.

The Green Bay Packers are in Kansas City to face the Chiefs and complete the 2022 preseason schedule on Thursday night.

The exhibition contest game can be viewed nationally on NFL Network. While the Packers will sit veteran starters, including quarterback Aaron Rodgers, coach Matt LaFleur and general manager Brian Gutekunst will still have plenty to watch during the preseason finale.

Here are five things to watch on Friday night at Arrowhead Stadium:

Rookie standouts

The Packers’ fourth-round picks – receiver Romeo Doubs and offensive lineman Zach Tom – both have an opportunity on Thursday night to take another big step toward regular-season playing time. Can Doubs create more big plays for Jordan Love? Even Aaron Rodgers knows that the rookie receiver – despite some ups and downs – is proving to be too talented to keep off the field. Tom has been rock-solid at right tackle and could be a legitimate starting option should David Bakhtiari and Elgton Jenkins not be ready for Week 1. Also: Christian Watson, the Packers’ second-rounder, could make his preseason debut after getting 11-on-11 reps in practice this week. There’s a chance he could make a big splash while playing with Jordan Love.

Edge rusher battle

One final opportunity to look at the backup outside linebackers in a game setting before roster cutdowns. Jonathan Garvin, Tipa Galeai, Ladarius Hamilton, Kobe Jones and rookie Kingsley Enagbare (who is probably a roster lock) have all flashed big-time disruptive ability at times during camp and the preseason, but this competition is still wide open. Who takes advantage of the opportunity on Thursday night? It’s possible two roster spots are on the line in the preseason finale. Watch the outside linebackers set the edge against the run, during one-on-one pass-rushing snaps and on special teams. It all matters.

Undrafted rookies with a chance

There appears to be just two undrafted rookies with a chance to make the team: offensive tackle Caleb Jones and running back Tyler Goodson. Jones has been terrific as the second-team left tackle and could force the Packers to keep 10 offensive linemen if he’s strong again on Thursday night. Players with his size and movement ability are rare and worth developing long-term. Goodson is attempting to make the team as the third running back. He’s battling Patrick Taylor, who has more experience and is the more well-rounded player. Goodson’s burst is a special trait, and he can catch the ball out of the backfield, but he’ll need to do something meaningful on special teams to stick.

Secondary stock watch

Cornerback Kiondre Thomas and safety Micah Abernathy have put themselves in a position to win roster spots in the Packers secondary over the first two preseason games. They are the defense’s two highest-graded players at Pro Football Focus so far this summer. Can a player like cornerback Rico Gafford or safety Innis Gaines make a late charge in Kansas City? While there’s no guarantee the Packers will keep six cornerbacks, the safety position is unsettled and at least one roster spot is there for the taking.

Another step from Love?

Love has not only shown obvious improvement from last year, but he even showed week-to-week improvement in his second preseason start last Friday night against the Saints. Can the third-year quarterback keep building momentum against the Chiefs? He’s been playing with more decisiveness and urgency, throwing with more zip and accuracy and showing more willingness to attack downfield and extend plays with his legs. Maybe this is the game where Love plays well again and his young receivers finally make all the plays. The Packers could score a lot of points on Thursday night if that’s the case.

Packers vs. Saints: 5 things to watch in preseason Week 2

Five things to watch and a prediction for the Packers’ second preseason game of the 2022 season on Friday night.

After a pair of joint practices this week, the Green Bay Packers will host the New Orleans Saints in the second of three preseason games on Friday night at Lambeau Field.

Here are five things to watch:

Another shot at Love

Backup quarterback Jordan Love was the star of Wednesday’s joint practice. Can he carry over that momentum into a preseason game on Friday night? He’ll be expected to start again, marking the first time he’s ever played in back-to-back games. The Packers want him to start fast, make good decisions and lead the offense to points. Maybe his supporting cast will be better around him after an avalanche of mistakes put a damper on the preseason opener. As always, grade Love on accuracy and decision-making.

Interior defensive line

First-round pick Devonte Wyatt should make his preseason debut, giving the Packers’ already loaded defensive front another weapon. In the preseason opener, TJ Slaton, Jack Heflin, Chris Slayton and Jonathan Ford all produced disruptive snaps up front. This group was dominant during joint practices with the Saints, too. Don’t be surprised if the Saints have a tough time at the line of scrimmage on Friday night.

Stack success at WR

After a tough day of practice on Tuesday that prompted a meeting of the minds between the quarterbacks and wide receivers, young pass-catchers such as Amari Rodgers, Samori Toure and Romeo Doubs bounced back with a strong performance to finish the joint practices on Wednesday. In San Francisco, the receivers made too many simple mistakes. But training camp is all about making mistakes, learning, and not repeating. Friday night at Lambeau Field is another opportunity to stack success, show consistency and prove to Love and Aaron Rodgers that they can be trusted in a game setting.

Special teams standouts

Roster spots will be won and lost on special teams, especially among the roster battles for depth roles on defense. Keep a close eye on who is operating on the kick and punt coverage units earlier in the contest on Friday, and who can make the one good block or one strong tackle for Rich Bisaccia’s group. Cornerback Kiondre Thomas (No. 43) is one name to watch. He had two tackles and was excellent as a blocker in the preseason opener. One other player to watch: long snapper Jack Coco. He’s still competing to win the job in Green Bay.

Right side of the offensive line

In particular, Royce Newman, Jake Hanson and Zach Tom. Elgton Jenkins’ return looms large, but the Packers still need to figure out a plan on the right side just in case Jenkins isn’t ready for Week 1. Will it be Hanson at right guard and Newman at right tackle? Or Newman at right guard and Tom at right tackle? These preseason snaps are huge in terms of finding the best five to put on the field to open the regular season. Tom’s performance at guard or tackle could solve the problem.

Packers vs. Vikings: 5 things to watch and a prediction

Five things to watch and a prediction for Sunday night’s primetime showdown between the Packers and Vikings.

The Green Bay Packers (12-3) will welcome the Minnesota Vikings (7-8) to a freezing Lambeau Field for an important primetime showdown on Sunday night.

The Packers need to win to get one step closer to clinching the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs, while the Vikings must win to stay alive in the race to be the NFC’s seventh playoff team.

Matt LaFleur’s team has lost two straight games to the Vikings, including last season’s matchup at Lambeau Field. However, the Packers are 7-0 at home this season and have won 12 straight regular-season games in Green Bay since the Week 8 loss to the Vikings last season.

Expect the weather to play a major factor. Current forecasts are predicting temperatures at kickoff to be well below freezing.

Five things to watch and a prediction for Saturday’s Christmas Day showdown between the Packers and Browns.

Lambeau Field doesn’t have a roof or a chimney, but Santa will still be coming to town to bring an incredible present worth opening in Green Bay on Christmas Day: A fascinating matchup between two of the most talented teams in football in a nationally televised matchup with playoff implications on both sides.

The Packers, the No. 1 seed in the NFC, will rock around the Christmas tree by hosting the Cleveland Browns, who are hanging on for dear life in the AFC postseason race.

Packers vs. Bears: 5 things to watch and a prediction

Five things to watch and a prediction for the Packers’ primetime showdown with the Chicago Bears in Week 14.

The Green Bay Packers (9-3) won’t have the opportunity to clinch the NFC North title on Sunday night, but the primetime showdown with the rival Chicago Bears (4-8) still represents a chance for Matt LaFleur’s team to take another big step towards a third straight division crown.

With a win over the Bears and either a Vikings loss or Packers win next week, Green Bay would be the NFC North champion in 2021.

The Packers will be facing a desperate opponent. The Bears have lost six of the last seven games and need a win to stay in the playoff hunt. But the one-sided dominance of this rivalry is hard to ignore: The Packers have won 20 of the last 23 matchups with the Bears.

Five things to watch and a prediction for the Packers’ showdown with the Vikings on Sunday.

The Green Bay Packers will attempt to take full control of the NFC North when they travel to Minnesota to play the Vikings on Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium.

The Vikings sit at 4-5 after an impressive win in Los Angeles last week, but a win by Matt LaFleurs’ team on Sunday in Minneapolis would give the Packers a five-game advantage in the win column and a commanding lead in the division overall with six games to go.

The Packers have won two straight games at U.S. Bank Stadium, including the division-clincher in 2019 and the season opener in 2020. Can LaFleur make it 3-for-3 in Minnesota?
