The 49ers are closer to a bit of team history after knocking off the Steelers in their 2023 season opener.
San Francisco began the year on a long winning streak thanks to their 10-game heater to close the 2022 campaign. That streak was tied for the third-longest in team history. They also won 10 in a row in 1948 and 1994.
Sunday’s 30-7 throttling of the Steelers pushed the 49ers to 11 consecutive regular-season wins. It’s only the third time they’ve surged beyond the 10-game mark. The last time they did it was in 1997, when they won 11 games in a row.
The 49ers now sit four wins shy of tying the franchise’s record for consecutive wins. Between the 1989 and 1990 seasons they ripped off 15 in a row.
To get there they’ll need to survive some tough battles. Their next four games are: at the Rams, home vs. the Giants (Thursday night), home vs. the Cardinals and home vs. the Cowboys (Sunday night).
If they manage to get through that group with their streak intact, they’ll need to beat the Browns in Cleveland to break the franchise record.
If they continue playing like they did Sunday, they have a real chance to not only beat that record, but set it at a place no future iteration of the 49ers is likely to touch.
