The 49ers had a rough outing vs. Washington, but there were some big and small things to take away from a dreary Week 14 loss.

he 49ers’ own mistakes did them in in a 23-15 defeat at the hands of the Washington Football Team.

They looked off-kilter all day on offense even while their defense was playing well. San Francisco got the first points of the game, but couldn’t regain the lead once they fell behind.

It’s going to be a long week for the 49ers based on what we saw Sunday. Here are our takeaways.

49ers offense makes dubious bit of history vs. Washington

Washington’s Chase Young and Kamren Curl both scored defensive touchdowns to put the 49ers offense in the wrong type of history book.

The San Francisco 49ers made the wrong kind of history again in Week 14. In their Week 13 loss to Buffalo they allowed Bills quarterback Josh Allen to have a stat line only one other quarterback has ever had against them. In Week 14 it was the offense’s turn to make a dubious footnote in the 2020 season.

The Washington Football Team got their first touchdown in their matchup against the 49ers with a fumble return by rookie defensive end Chase Young. Later in the game Nick Mullens threw an interception to Washington CB Kamren Curl that got returned for a touchdown.

San Francisco hadn’t allowed a fumble return and interception return for a touchdown in the same game since Week 1 of the 1999 season when the Jaguars did it to them in a 41-3 beatdown in Jacksonville.

The only other times that’s happened in team history were 1965 and 1950.

These random bits of bad history are bound to happen now and then, but it’s very fitting of the 49ers’ 2020 season that they have their offense and defense make the wrong type of history in back-to-back weeks.
