Watch: Elijah Mitchell finally finds end zone for 49ers

It turns out a #49ers player not named Deebo Samuel can get a rushing touchdown.

It was a second-half avalanche early in the third quarter for the 49ers. They got a touchdown to go ahead 21-14 over the Vikings, then one play later Vikings QB Kirk Cousins tossed a bad interception to 49ers LB Azeez Al-Shaair that set up the 49ers at the Minnesota 3. Running back Elijah Mitchell punched it in on first down to put the 49ers up two touchdowns. Mitchell is up to 82 yards on 15 carries, and the rushing score is the rookie’s first since Week 8 at Chicago.

Watch: Deebo Samuel is the 49ers’ best running back

WATCH: #49ers WR Deebo Samuel is also their best running back.

The 49ers badly needed a score to open the second half, so they turned to their best player – wide receiver running back Deebo Samuel.

He got the drive kickstarted with a 49-yard run to get the 49ers all the way to the Vikings’ 8. A holding penalty moved them back, but a screen to George Kittle put them back inside the 5, where Samuel took over again. His 3-yard rushing score was his fifth rushing touchdown of the season and 10th touchdown overall.

Ideally the 49ers would be able generate yards with players beyond Samuel, but for the last few weeks it’s been working and it helped the 49ers take a 21-14 lead over Minnesota.

WATCH: Nick Bosa gets Kirk Cousins for 11th sack of season

WATCH: Nick Bosa hits Kirk Cousins for 11th sack of the season. #49ers

Nick Bosa is on a tear in his third NFL season. He helped put the Vikings behind the sticks after a 49ers punt in the second quarter. On a first-and-10, Bosa flew off the right edge and hit Vikings QB Kirk Cousins for his first sack of the game and 11th off the year. He had his 10th sack in Week 11 to set his new career high. Minnesota wound up punting a couple plays later.

WATCH: Deebo Samuel scores 4th rushing TD of season

WATCH: Deebo Samuel’s 4th rushing score of the season ties #49ers and Vikings at 7.

Deebo Samuel’s evolution into a running back continued Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings. He capped a six-play, 75-yard touchdown drive with a 20-yard rushing touchdown – his fourth of the year. Ironically the 49ers’ drive started with a Samuel run that went backward four yards. A big 37-yard completion to Brandon Aiyuk on a third-and-13 helped kickstart the 49ers’ scoring drive that tied the game at 7-7.

49ers inactives: Elijah Mitchell officially in for 49ers vs. Vikings

Elijah Mitchell is officially ACTIVE for the #49ers.

The 49ers will have a full slate of playmakers at their disposal when the face the Vikings on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium. Running back Elijah Mitchell was officially listed as ‘questionable’ on the team’s Week 12 injury report, but he was not listed among their inactives.

Here’s who won’t suit up for San Francisco:

DL Maurice Hurst (calf)
RB JaMycal Hasty (ankle)
OL Colton McKivitz
DL Jordan Willis

Mitchell was limited all week in practice while he continued recovering from surgery on a fractured finger. Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Friday indicated Mitchell’s status for Sunday would be determined by how the running back felt in pregame.

It’ll be interesting to see how the 49ers divvy up carries among their running backs. Mitchell has been the workhorse when healthy, but with his sore finger San Francisco may lean more on Jeff Wilson Jr. and rookie Trey Sermon.

Week 12 NFL Pick ‘Em: Thanksgiving games were fun!

The picks are in! NFL Week 12 picks straight up, against the spread and over/unders.

The 2021 NFL slate on Thanksgiving Day was perfectly imperfect. The Lions-Bears game was a total disaster, but it was expected and provided just enough entertainment for the morning. The midday game with the Raiders and Cowboys was gross from an officiating perspective, but it was a shootout and provided some terrific pre-dinner entertainment. The Bills-Saints matchup was abysmal, but by then the food coma had set in and it didn’t matter. Shoutout to Thanksgiving games.

Behind Enemy Lines: Are the Minnesota Vikings better than 5-5?

Going behind enemy lines with @TheVikingsWire ahead of Sunday’s matchup. Are the Vikings better than 5-5?

The 49ers and Vikings have taken nearly identical paths to the 5-5 records they hold going into Sunday’s matchup. Last time these teams faced off was in the 2019 divisional playoffs when San Francisco steamrolled Minnesota 27-10 at Levi’s Stadium. Now both teams look a little different, so we connected with our buddy Jack White from the Vikings Wire to discuss this year’s squad.

Here’s our chat:

49ers activate LB Dre Greenlaw off IR

The #49ers on Saturday activated LB Dre Greenlaw off injured reserve.

The 49ers on Saturday got some of their linebacker depth back. LB Dre Greenlaw was officially activated off injured reserve after recovering from a groin injury. San Francisco didn’t have a full roster so no corresponding move was necessary to remove Greenlaw from IR.

Greenlaw was dealing with a groin issue in camp and hurt it in Week 1 while returning an interception for a touchdown just before the end of the first half. He went to the locker room early and never returned. He went on IR the following week.

It was a long recovery for Greenlaw who missed the requisite three games, then an additional six games. Head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated at the bye week there was a possibility Greenlaw could return post-bye in Week 7, which made his prolonged absence a little perplexing. The 49ers opened his practice window before Week 11, but didn’t activate him until Saturday after he’d gotten two weeks of practice in.

Greenlaw before he went down was the 49ers’ starting Will linebacker, which means he was on the field for all three downs. However, Azeez Al-Shaair slid nicely into that role and could conceivably stay there with Greenlaw moving into the Sam linebacker role who’s generally on the field in base packages.

Either way the team’s depth at the position improved dramatically with Greenlaw’s return. Even if he is the Sam LB he’s much more experienced than either Marcell Harris or Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles who were the top two reserves at the linebacker spot.

Defensive end Dee Ford, who’s practice window was opened Thursday, was not activated and will remain on IR with a back injury.

49ers Week 12 injury report: Elijah Mitchell questionable vs. Vikings

The #49ers could get their leading rusher Elijah Mitchell back from a finger injury vs. the Vikings.

The 49ers got through their Week 12 practices without any new injuries cropping up, and their official injury report for Sunday’s matchup with the Minnesota Vikings only had three players listed.

Two potential moves are lingering for San Francisco with linebacker Dre Greenlaw and defensive end Dee Ford both opening their practice windows. Greenlaw has practiced the last two weeks, and Ford just got back to practice for this week. Neither player is listed on the injury report since they haven’t been activated yet.

Both could be activated Saturday though with a chance to play Sunday.

Here’s the Week 12 injury report:
