Why 49ers RBs Elijah Mitchell, Jeff Wilson Jr. were out of preseason opener

Here’s why Elijah Mitchell and Jeff Wilson Jr. were out of the #49ers’ preseason opener.

The 49ers notched 32 runs in their preseason opener vs. the Packers. None of them came from the two players expected to top their depth chart come Week 1.

Neither running back Elijah Mitchell nor Jeff Wilson Jr. suited up Friday night for different reasons.

Mitchell is dealing with a hamstring strain that will likely keep him out of Week 2 preseason action according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. It’s unclear when Mitchell suffered the injury, but it’s worth monitoring closely considering the second-year RB missed six games as a rookie because of various physical ailments.

Hamstrings are particularly tricky, so the club may shut him down for the rest of the preseason to make sure he’s healthy for the regular season. The 49ers have a deep backfield, but Mitchell is pretty clearly their top RB.

Wilson was excused from the preseason opener for a personal reason per Shanahan. It’s unclear when he’ll be back with the team, but his absence probably didn’t impact the 49ers much. It’s hard to imagine the club would’ve used him much with Trey Sermon and Tyrion Davis-Price needing in-game work.

Trey Lance slide an important first for young QB

Trey Lance had a career first in Friday’s game, and it might be the most important development of his career.

Trey Lance’s only carry against the Packers in Friday’s preseason game wasn’t by design. The quarterback stepped up through the pocket, reset his feet, then took off for a seven-yard gain that ended in a slide. The ending was the most important part of the play. It was also a first.

Lance, who took a number of big hits in his minimal playing time last year because he was trying to run through tacklers, tried avoiding a hit for the first time ever Friday night.

I got down,” Lance said in his postgame press conference via NBC Sports Bay Area. “That was my first time sliding in my whole entire life. So that was good.”

Avoiding hits is one of the single biggest improvements Lance can make this season. His accuracy and reads and such will all matter, to be sure, but he has to stay healthy. That’s especially true considering the 49ers’ injury issues when Jimmy Garoppolo was under center.

Seeing Lance slide in the open field just shy of the first-down marker as a defender closed in was the most positive development of his 2022 debut. Self-preservation is a skill that Lance appears to be picking up as he plays more football.

The key will be carrying that into the regular season when the games and yards all count. His health matters above all else, so hopefully for the 49ers his first slide isn’t his last.

Watch: Brock Purdy gives 49ers late lead with TD pass

Brock Purdy SZNNNNN. #49ers

Mr. Irrelevant came up big for the 49ers halfway through the fourth quarter of Friday night’s preseason opener. Brock Purdy led the 49ers on an 11-play, 69-yard touchdown drive in his first series as a pro. He went three-for-six for 36 yards and a touchdown to tight end Tanner Hudson on the drive. Purdy then floated up a perfect fade to wide receiver KeeSean Johnson for the two-point conversion to put the 49ers up 28-21 inside of eight minutes to go.

49ers injury update: Rookie DE Drake Jackson questionable to return vs. Packers

49ers injury update: Rookie DE Drake Jackson (shoulder) questionable to return.

The 49ers got some bad injury news late in the first half of their preseason opener. Rookie defensive end Drake Jackson exited the contest with a shoulder injury and is questionable to return.

He went down after fighting off two blockers to chase down Packers quarterback Jordan Love on a scramble. It was an extremely impressive play by Jackson to catch Love on the edge, but somehow he went down awkwardly on his arm.

Jackson made his way to the medical tent for evaluation before being walked to the locker room.

Chances are the No. 61 overall pick is done for the night regardless of his status. He’ll finish the night with no tackles and one pass defensed on a tipped throw he got a hand on while pressuring Love.

49ers rookie CB Samuel Womack comes up with slick INT vs. Packers

Samuel Womack’s 1st pro game. 1st pro interception (after review).

Initially 49ers rookie cornerback Samuel Womack was going to have to live with playing tight coverage on a third-and-5 to bring up a fourth-and-1. Then head coach Kyle Shanahan challenged the play.

Womack came up with the football on an awkward play, but the official ruled Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs had the completion. It was clear on replay Womack wrestled the ball away from his fellow first-year player. The call was overturned and Womack had his first professional INT.

Watch: 49ers UDFA Marcelino McCrary-Ball comes up with INT

Watch: 49ers UDFA Marcelino McCrary-Ball comes up with INT.

Preseason games don’t count in the standings, but they matter to players like 49ers undrafted linebacker Marcelino McCrary-Ball who are fighting for a roster spot.

McCrary-Ball made his case to stick around with the 49ers to end the first quarter when he came up with an interception off a tipped throw in the red zone. Perhaps the most impressive part of the play was the  57-yard return. Athleticism is key in the second level in the modern NFL, and McCrary-Ball has it in spades.

Watch: Trey Lance unloads 76-yard TD to Danny Gray

WATCHH: Lance. Gray. 76-yard tuddy.

It was a little perplexing that Trey Lance came out for a second series in the 49ers’ preseason opener after an eight-play first drive. His second drive began with a sack. Then he tossed a quick screen to running back Trey Sermon. Then on third-and-10 he let loose on a deep ball down the left sideline that hit rookie wide receiver Danny Gray in stride for a 76-yard touchdown. San Francisco couldn’t have drawn it up better than that.
