49ers have to get used to underdog role in 2021 playoffs

The #49ers are underdogs vs. the Cowboys on Sunday. That’s something they’ll have to get used to this postseason.

The 49ers will take on an underdog role Sunday in Dallas when they open their playoff slate. Tipico Sportsbook has them as 3.5-point underdogs on the road against the NFC East winners. This is something San Francisco will need to get used to.

As seasoned as the 49ers might be and as well as they’ve played over the second half of the year, they’re still liable to be the underdog in each of their postseason matchups.

Their path if they beat Dallas and there are no additional upsets would send them to Green Bay and then Tampa Bay. It’s a brutal stretch that not many teams would be able to get through.

Improbability has defined the 49ers’ season to this point though. They fell to 2-4, then to 3-5, then they ripped of seven of their last nine to sneak into the postseason as the No. 6 seed. Even their playoff-clinching win needed one of the most improbable comebacks in NFL history.

San Francisco may go into AT&T Stadium as underdogs, but even if they win they’ll for good reason hold on to that title. While they may not be the betting favorite to win any of their playoff games, it would be unwise to count this year’s team out.

49ers-Cowboys playoff game officially scheduled

Showtime: The #49ers and Cowboys will kick off at 1:30pm PT on Sunday.

The 49ers beat the Rams on Sunday to secure their place in the playoffs and a date with the Dallas Cowboys in the wild card round of the NFL playoffs.

San Francisco will visit the Cowboys at AT&T Stadium on Sunday with kickoff set for1:30 pm Pacific Time.

Dallas earned the No. 3 seed by going 12-5 and running away with the NFC East. The 49ers snagged the No. 6 seed with a 10-7 record after their win in Los Angeles the final week of the season.

It’ll be a rekindling of an NFL rivalry that defined the NFC in the early 1990s, but the 49ers and Cowboys haven’t squared off in the playoffs since the 1994 season when San Francisco topped Dallas 38-28 en route to a Super Bowl win.

The 49ers are 2-5 all-time against the Cowboys in the postseason.

Sunday’s game will be televised and streaming on CBS, Nickelodeon, Paramount+ and Amazon Prime Video.

Observations from 49ers worst loss of 2020

The San Francisco 49ers suffered their most embarrassing loss of the 2020 season against the Dallas Cowboys.

The 49ers brought it on themselves. Four more turnovers, three from quarterback Nick Mullens, defined their Week 15 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Their season is over.

Here are our observations from Sunday’s game:

WATCH: Jordan Reed puts 49ers on board with TD catch

The 49ers got on the board vs. the Cowboys with a Jordan Reed TD catch from Nick Mullens.

The 49ers badly needed a long scoring drive after a pair of early giveaways in Dallas. They got one with a 13-play, 75-yard drive where everything was clicking for Nick Mullens and Raheem Mostert. It was Mullens who capped the drive though with a five-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Reed. The TD was Reed’s fourth of the year and cut the Dallas lead from 14-0 to 14-7.

The Cowboys will be without Zeke Elliott today as their injury-ridden season continues, they are looking for a win after losing four straight. San Francisco has played well with Nick Mullens under center but they still sit at 5-8 and out of playoff contention.
