The good and bad from the 49ers’ 27-10 win over the Commanders to lock up the NFC No. 1 seed

Here’s a look at all of the good and some of the bad from the 49ers’ 27-10 victory over the Commanders on New Year’s Eve.

Before they could lock up the No. 1 overall seed in the NFC playoff picture, the San Francisco 49ers had to go through the Washington Commanders in Week 17.

Despite a slow start that saw the Commanders trail by only three points at halftime, the 49ers were able to open things up in the second half to cruise to a double-digit victory.

With a pair of touchdowns in the second half, the 49ers rolled to a bounce-back win over the Commanders 27-10. Along with recording their 12th victory of the campaign on New Year’s Eve, the 49ers will head into 2024 with the No. 1 seed in the NFC locked up.

Following the 49ers’ win over the Commanders, here’s a look at some of the good and bad from Sunday’s contest in the capital.

Takeaways from 49ers win that propelled them to No. 1 seed

Takeaways from a huge Sunday for the #49ers:

The 49ers overcame a small amount of adversity set up by their end-of-season schedule with a 27-10 win over the Commanders in Washington. More on that adversity later.

It was a game San Francisco was heavily favored to win, and one they controlled for most of the contest save for a couple series in the first half and early in the second half.

Here are our takeaways from a huge day for the 49ers:

Notes and observations from 49ers blowout win over Commanders

Notes and observations from the #49ers blowout win over the Commanders:

The 49ers got a much-needed win in Washington after an abysmal Week 16 performance. San Francisco overwhelmed the Commanders 27-10 in a game that could’ve been even more out of hand had the 49ers not made a couple key mistakes in the red zone.

Here are our notes and observations from each quarter of San Francisco’s romp.

Watch: 49ers RB Elijah Mitchell punches in first TD of the season vs. Commanders

Elijah Mitchell got on the board with his first touchdown run of the season on a two-yard rush against the Commanders.

After helping the San Francisco 49ers move up the field with seven carries on a single drive, Kyle Shanahan opted to let Elijah Mitchell finish the job at the goal line against the Washington Commanders.

For the first time this season, Mitchell punched in a touchdown on a two-yard plunge to extend the 49ers’ lead over the Commanders, 20-10.

Via @49ers on Twitter:

Through three quarters, the 49ers have racked up 128 yards rushing on the ground against the Commanders. Mitchell has posted 42 yards rushing on eight carries in Washington.

Watch: Deebo Samuel walks in a score off a Brock Purdy short pass vs. Commanders

Mark that touchdown pass No. 30 for Brock Purdy.

After settling for a field goal on the opening drive of the game, S got the San Francisco 49ers’ rolling against the Washington Commanders on Sunday.

Samuel walked in an easy score on a shovel pass from Brock Purdy from the two-yard line to increase the 49ers’ advantage over the Commanders, 10-0. Purdy connected with Samuel multiple times on the lead-up to the end zone, along with a 17-yard pass from Brandon Aiyuk.

Purdy’s short shovel pass to Samuel counted for his No. 30 touchdown pass on 2023-24 campaign.

49ers injury report: Trent Williams not listed, good to go vs. Washington

Trent Williams is a go for the #49ers on Sunday. Here’s the full injury report:

The 49ers injury report is still crowded, but they got the best possible news on left tackle Trent Williams, who is not listed after dealing with a groin injury throughout the week.

There was some concern with Williams after he got hurt during the team’s Monday night loss to the Ravens that he may not be able to play on the quick turnaround. After limited sessions Wednesday and Thursday it looked like he might be on track to be listed as questionable on the injury report.

Instead he was not listed which means he’ll be ready to go when he visits Washington for the first time since being traded by the Commanders to the 49ers during the 2020 NFL draft.

Here’s a look at the full injury report:

49ers-Commanders not a popular game on Week 17 NFL slate

The 49ers-Commanders matchup won’t be on a ton of TVs nationally:

There’s not expected to be a ton of competition between the 49ers and Commanders on Sunday in Washington DC. Depending on the sportsbook San Francisco is favored by as many as 13.5 points. After a slew of primetime and marquee matchups, the 49ers will take a step back on the TV slate for their Week 17 game vs. Washington.

506 Sports has the broadcast map which helps illustrate the vast disparity between how many people got the 49ers-Eagles Week 13 matchup on TV, and how many will get this week’s 49ers game in DC.

People living in the yellow portion of the map will get the San Francisco-Washington game on TV:

(via 506 Sports)

Fans through Northern California and part of the Midwest will get the contest, as well as the Washington DC area. Outside of that the Fox matchups are mostly localized to the teams’ markets. CBS has a couple of the marquee matchups with the Ravens-Dolphins and Bengals-Chiefs headlining the Week 17 slate on that channel.

If Washington was better or in the playoff hunt there’s a chance the 49ers and Commanders would’ve seen more widespread viewership availability. Alas, a game where San Francisco is favored by nearly two touchdowns wasn’t going to get a ton of nationwide love.
