NFL Network predicts every game on 49ers schedule

An NFL Network analyst predicts the #49ers will be worse in 2022 than they were last season.

There may not be a higher-variance team in the NFL than the 49ers going into this season. They’re coming off a trip to the NFC championship game and return virtually all of their top players from last year’s squad. A dramatic change with first-time starter Trey Lance taking over under center, and some question marks on the offensive line offer a high ceiling and low floor for the 49ers.

Predicting how they’ll finish requires a ton of conjecture since Lance is ostensibly a complete unknown at the most important position on the field. We gave it a crack in our way-too-early predictions after the schedule came out. Now NFL Media’s Adam Rank is giving it a try. Rank famously guessed San Francisco would go 3-13 in 2019 when they wound up going to the Super Bowl.

This year essentially any guess with the 49ers is valid, and a person’s prediction will say a lot about how much faith they have in Lance and San Francisco’s coaching staff.

Rank is high on neither and believes the 49ers will be worse in 2022. Here are his guesses, and some thoughts on how this might come true:

49ers preseason opener to air on NFL Network

The #49ers preseason opener vs. the Packers will air on NFL Network.

Two of the 49ers’ three preseason games will be accessible, live to a nationwide audience. The NFL on Monday announced San Francisco’s preseason opener at Levi’s Stadium against the Green Bay Packers on August 12 will air live at 5:30pm Pacific Time on NFL Network. It’s one of 22 preseason bouts that will air there.

San Francisco will also play the Texans in their preseason finale on Amazon Prime.

Any Packers-49ers matchup will draw some extra eyeballs, so it’s not a huge surprise the NFL jumped on the chance to get this one on its airwaves.

For the 49ers it’ll presumably be Trey Lance’s first game as the full-time starter, and he may get some extra run due to his lack of in-game experience. Preseason reps are a tune-up for seasoned starters. They’ll be invaluable for Lance and a new-look offensive line.

For Green Bay the preseason opener will mark their first game since trading star wide receiver Davante Adams.

The 49ers and Packers last played in the divisional playoffs in January, with San Francisco escaping Green Bay with a 10-7 win.

Week 2: vs. Seattle Seahawks
Week 3: at Denver Broncos (SNF)
Week 4: vs. Los Angeles Rams (MNF)
Week 5: at Carolina Panthers

Week 10: vs. Los Angeles Chargers (SNF)
Week 11: @ Arizona Cardinals (MNF in Mexico)
Week 12: vs. New Orleans Saints
Week 13: vs. Miami Dolphins
Week 14: vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Report: 49ers to open season in Chicago

Report: The #49ers will open their 2022 season in Chicago vs. Justin Fields and the Bears.

The 49ers’ 2022 season opener will feature a fun quarterback matchup if everything goes according to plan. Danny Parkins of 670 the Score in Chicago reported San Francisco will open its 2022 campaign in the Windy City against the Bears.

Assuming Trey Lance wins the starting job for the 49ers, it’ll pit him against Bears QB Justin Fields, who went No. 11 in the 2021 draft, eight picks behind Lance.

There were rumors leading up to the 2021 draft that Fields was in the mix for San Francisco with the No. 3 pick. Head coach Kyle Shanahan even attended his Pro Day. However, since the draft Shanahan has indicated the decision came down to Lance and Alabama QB Mac Jones.

The 49ers knocked off Fields and the Bears 33-22 last year at Soldier Field to kickstart a strong second half to their season. Fields in that game went 19-27 for 175 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He also ran for 103 yards and a touchdown on 10 attempts. Lance did not see the field for San Francisco.

49ers schedule: An offseason look at 2022 opponents

With head coach changes and QB questions abound, let’s take a look at the #49ers’ 2022 opponents and where they stand going into the offseason:

The 49ers will head into 2022 with a first-year starting quarterback and sizable expectations following another run to the NFC championship game.

Their schedule for next season is interesting though. While it’s a fool’s errand to try and discern before the year which games are “easy” and which ones aren’t, the 49ers’ 2022 opponents make that type of prognostication particularly difficult because so many of them face massive question marks in the offseason.

With head coach changes and QB questions abound, let’s take a look at the 49ers’ 2022 opponents and where they stand going into the offseason:

49ers vs. Seahawks Week 13 game flexed out of Sunday Night Football

The #49ers and Seahawks matchup in Week 13 has been flexed out of Sunday Night Football.

The 49ers and Seahawks’ Week 13 showdown in Seattle has been taken out of the prime time Sunday Night Football slot per an announcement from the NFL. San Francisco vs. Seattle will move to Sunday afternoon at 1:25 pm Pacific Time. The Broncos-Chiefs matchup in Kansas City will take the vacant SNF opening.

It’s not a surprise to see the 49ers and Seahawks taken out of Sunday Night Football given where Seattle sits after Week 11. The 49ers will be at best 6-5 and worthy of a prime time slot, but the Seahawks are 3-7 with no real signs of life. There’s a real possibility it would’ve been a 5-6 49ers club fighting for a playoff spot against a 3-8 Seattle team just limping to the finish.

For the 49ers this eliminates a prime time contest, but they still have a Thursday night game left in Week 16 in Tennessee. San Francisco this season was 1-2 in prime time this season with losses to the Packers and Seahawks on Sunday Night Football and a win over the Rams on Monday Night Football.

49ers defensive position grades through 1st half of season

Grades on each defensive position for the #49ers in the first half of the season.

The 49ers’ defense was supposed to be the unit that spearheaded another deep playoff run. While it wasn’t likely to match the strength of the 2019 unit, it was certainly supposed to perform at a higher level than it has through the first eight games.

Just how bad has the defense been? We went through and issued grades for each position to figure out how far they’ve fallen below expectations.
