The San Francisco 49ers have some breathing room atop the NFC West after they shutout the New Orleans Saints in a 13-0 victory in Week 12.

San Francisco’s fourth successive win marked the franchise’s first shutout since a 2019 triumph over Washington. That season ended with the Niners contesting the Super Bowl and, while the offense was unconvincing, the continuation of a hot streak in which the 49ers have found various ways to win will breed further confidence they can return to that stage.

Having improved to 7-4, the 49ers hold a one-game lead over the Seattle Seahawks, who lost in overtime to the Las Vegas Raiders. With San Francisco holding the head-to-head edge over Seattle following their Week 2 matchup, the 49ers theoretically have some room for error.

The 49ers, though, will be eager to press home advantage, but what did we learn about the team after they took another step towards a third postseason trip in four years.

Why San Francisco 49ers Will Win

The passing game still works.

It might not have a big downfield offense, and it’s missing some key parts – the entire team is – but even with Nick Mullens taking over the quarterbacking reins, the O is still getting well over 250 yards per game through the air.

Combine that with a ground game that’s doing just enough to close – the team leads the NFL in touchdown runs and has only allowed five scores – but …

Why New Orleans Saints Will Win

New Orleans isn’t giving up a thing on the ground.

Eight yards. That’s how many Tampa Bay was able to gain last week against a Saint D that came up with one of the season’s most dominant performances.

The Saint offense was able to spread the ball around well, the offense put up 420 yards without getting Michael Thomas involved all that much. On both sides of the ball, the pressure will keep coming.

Fantasy Football Player To Watch

RB Latavius Murray, New Orleans
New Orleans won’t want to get quirky here. It’ll want to control the ball on offense and grind-it-out with short passes and a heavy dose of Murray. Although he’s end-zone dependent for his big weeks, keep in mind that he received more carries than Alvin Kamara last week against the Bucs. Here comes the end to the scoring slump.

What’s Going To Happen

New Orleans won’t be able to repeat the brilliance of Sunday night against the Bucs, but it’ll be workmanlike and sound on both sides of the ball – helped by being +2 in turnover margin – to push through.

49ers trade LB Kwon Alexander to Saints for Kiko Alonso and draft pick

San Francisco has made a huge trade before Tuesday’s deadline, sending Alexander to New Orleans.

The San Francisco 49ers have struck a deal with the New Orleans Saints before Tuesday’s trade deadline. They’re sending linebacker Kwon Alexander to the Saints, offloading his bloated contract.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the 49ers will get a conditional fifth-round pick and likely a player in exchange for Alexander. Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported that Kiko Alonso is the player San Francisco will receive as part of the package for Alexander.

Alexander was a Pro Bowler in 2017 with the Buccaneers but he’s only played 13 games for the 49ers since coming to San Francisco before the 2019 season. This season, he’s had issues with missed tackles and overaggressiveness in his pursuit of ball carriers, leading to gaffes for San Francisco’s defense.

The 49ers signed Alexander to a four-year, $54 million contract in 2019 and he was slated to have cap hits of more than $16 million in each of the next two seasons.

In five games this season, Alexander has 30 tackles, one sack and a forced fumble.

The 49ers have depth at linebacker even with Alexander now gone. Fred Warner has become one of the best linebackers in football, and Dre Greenlaw, a fifth-round pick in 2019, has played extremely well this year and will see his role grow in place of Alexander.
