Positive injury news on a pair of 49ers on IR

The 49ers may be getting a couple playmakers back off of Injured Reserve.

The 49ers haven’t had much in the way of good injury luck this season, but they could be getting healthier soon. ESPN’s Nick Wagoner observed during Thursday’s practice slot corner K’Waun Williams and tight end Jordan Reed working out on a side field.

Williams and Reed are both on Injured Reserve and therefore can’t practice with the team until their practice window is opened, but workouts on a side field are a positive indication of progress in their rehab.

San Francisco placed Williams on IR with a knee sprain following the team’s loss to the Eagles. He went into the game with a hip issue as well. He’s eligible to come off IR following the team’s game in New England.  Jamar Taylor has been working in the slot with Williams out.

Reed sprained his knee in the 49ers’ Week 3 romp over the Giants. He initially twisted his ankle and left the game, but returned only to hurt his knee on his next reception. He’s been on IR since before Week 4 and is eligible to come off the injured list once he’s deemed healthy enough to play. Head coach Kyle Shanahan initially said Reed would be out six-to-eight weeks, and San Francisco recently released TE Daniel Helm who was signed to take Reed’s roster spot.

The 49ers will never be fully healthy this season, but Williams and Reed are both bona fide playmakers who make the team better.

49ers may be without Richard Sherman, Dee Ford until after bye week

The 49ers won’t have Richard Sherman or Dee Ford at least until after the Bye week.

Life without Richard Sherman and Dee Ford will continue for the 49ers for the foreseeable future. Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Wednesday said both players will likely be out until after the Bye week, which comes in Week 11.

Sherman has been out since Week 1 dealing with a calf injury. Initial indications were that he wouldn’t miss more than a few weeks, but he’ll be sidelined for several more weeks after his most recent round of treatment.

“Yeah, he got those, I think it was last week. Now he’s in a boot just taking care of it, making sure it heals and let those take course,” Shanahan told reporters via video conference. “I thought it would be, I’d have more answers this week, but I still think it’s going to be a few weeks on that. It’s obviously going a little longer than we expected. Got to play it smart with him, but I don’t see it being week-to-week right now. I see it being probably until around our Bye week.”

The 49ers and Sherman are in a precarious spot with this injury. Matt Barrows of the Athletic wrote on Twitter that it’s a lower calf injury. Sherman has had two Achilles surgeries so pushing him back from a lower calf ailment probably isn’t something the team is interested in doing.

Ford is on the same timetable for now while he deals with a back injury. Shanahan’s inclusion of Ford on the same track as Sherman is the first time he’s given any real outlook on the defensive end’s return, although there’s still nothing definitive.

“I’m not sure on that. I would still throw it similar into that category after our Bye week,” Shanahan said. “He’s gotten the work he’s needed, he’s gotten the shots he’s needed, he’s rested it and now he’s just starting to get back into some things, but still a ways away on that.”

With a conservative training staff like the 49ers have, it’s not surprising they’re also taking it easy with Ford.

Ultimately San Francisco just has to make it through the Bye week in the playoff hunt. If they can do that and get Ford and Sherman back for the final few games, they’ll be in a really good spot to make a. postseason run.

49ers injury report: 4 starters miss 1st practice leading up to Week 7

The 49ers had four starters out with injuries in their first practice of Week 7.

The 49ers were without four starters during Wednesday’s practice leading up to their showdown with the Patriots in New England.

San Francisco was just starting to get healthier in the lead up to their Week 6 game vs. the Rams, and their offense going into that game was as complete as it had been all year. A pair of injuries Sunday night though have put that unit in flux once again.

The secondary took another hit too, Sunday with Jaquiski Tartt leaving early with a groin injury. He was another of the four starters out Wednesday, alongside linebacker Kwon Alexander who has a high ankle sprain.

Here’s Wednesday’s practice participation report:

Did not participate

LB Kwon Alexander (ankle)
RB Raheem Mostert (ankle)
S Jaquiski Tartt (groin)
OT Trent Williams (ankle)

Limited participation

CB Dontae Johnson (groin)
RB Jeff Wilson (calf)

49ers injury update: Raheem Mostert likely headed to IR

The 49ers had their offensive weapons intact for one game. Now they’re set to lose running back Raheem Mostert for an extended period of time according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. Center Ben Garland is also set to miss multiple weeks.

Mostert suffered a high ankle sprain in Sunday night’s win over the Rams. He had 16 totes in the first half, then carried once in the second half before exiting the game for good. Shanahan said Mostert’s ailment will likely land him on Injured Reserve.

Garland may also go on IR because of a calf strain he suffered Sunday night. Hroniss Grasu played the final seven snaps against the Rams and figures to continue in the center spot with Garland out

Mostert already missed two games this season with a knee sprain. Now an IR stint ensures he’ll miss at least three more games. Mostert was the 49ers’ leading rusher this season with 303 rushing yards and 5.9 yards per attempt. Jerick McKinnon, JaMycal Hasty and Jeff Wilson Jr. are the other running backs on the roster.

49ers rule out RB Raheem Mostert with ankle injury

The 49ers won’t have Raheem Mostert for the second half vs. the Los Angeles Rams.

The 49ers won’t have running back Raheem Mostert for the rest of Sunday night’s game against the Rams. He’s been ruled out with an ankle injury.

Mostert appeared to get banged up in the first half and played through it. He entered the game after halftime with additional tape on his ankle. Mostert limped off after his first carry of the second half and was quickly ruled out.

His night is done with 17 carries for 65 yards, and two catches for 11 yards. The 17 carries are his second-most ever in a game.

49ers injury report: Defense continues getting healthier

The 49ers secondary is on track to get a starter back vs. the Rams with Emmanuel Moseley participating in a full practice Thursday.

The 49ers’ Thursday practice report offered another bit of optimism that cornerback Emmanuel Moseley will be back in action Sunday night against the Rams.

Moseley, who’s been out since sustaining a concussion in Week 3, was out of his blue non-contact jersey and took part in a full practice. Barring some kind of setback between Thursday and Sunday, he should slide into the starting lineup at the cornerback spot across from Jason Verrett.

Sunday will mark only the third game all year one of the 49ers’ two starting cornerbacks is in the lineup. Richard Sherman has been out since Week 1, and Moseley missed Weeks 3 and 4. With Verrett playing well, San Francisco’s secondary should be as good as its been since the opener just in time for the high-octane Rams to visit Levi’s Stadium. Friday’s status report will offer a better picture of player availability for Sunday.

Here’s Thursday’s practice report:

Did not participate

LB Kwon Alexander (ankle)
S Marcell Harris (ankle)
CB Dontae Johnson (groin)
RB Jeffery Wilson (calf)

Full participation

QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle)
DL D.J. Jones (eye)
CB Emmanuel Moseley (concussion)

Kwon Alexander has possible high ankle sprain

The 49ers don’t know whether Kwon Alexander will miss time with a high ankle sprain of unknown severity.

[jwplayer 1VluAHxZ-ThvAeFxT]

The 49ers couldn’t escape their Week 5 loss to the Dolphins without another injured starter. Linebacker Kwon Alexander is dealing with a potential high ankle sprain according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Shanahan told reporters during his Monday video conference that Alexander suffered what the team believes is a high ankle sprain, but the severity of the ailment is unknown, leaving some uncertainty about how much time the linebacker will miss.

“They’re not sure of the severity of it. It could be a minor one for whatever that means,” Shanahan said. “So, that’s why, usually if it was automatic high ankle sprain, I’d be talking about IR and stuff right now, but they told me to hold on that because they think it possibly could be a minor one. Don’t know. They’ve got to do more work today on it and we’ll have an answer on that for Wednesday.”

Alexander didn’t wind up missing any time Sunday. He played all but one snap on defense and racked up five tackles and a sack. Still, high ankle sprains are typically painful injuries that knock players out for multiple weeks. Jimmy Garoppolo missed two weeks with his and still didn’t appear to be quite right Sunday.

Injuries have been an unfortunate theme for Alexander over the last three seasons. A torn ACL in 2018 limited him to only six games. A torn pectoral cut his regular season to just eight games last year. Now he has a high ankle sprain that could wind up costing him multiple games.

This season Alexander has 30 tackles, three tackles for loss and one sack through the first five games.

49ers injury report: Jimmy Garoppolo among 3 starters returning to practice

The 49ers got starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo back in practice, but that doesn’t mean he’ll play vs. the Miami Dolphins.

The 49ers got a couple good bits of injury news after Wednesday’s practice. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, running back Raheem Mostert and linebacker Dre Greenlaw were all back in practice after getting hurt in Week 2 and missing the last two weeks.

Garoppolo has been dealing with a high ankle sprain that he sustained early in Week 2 vs. the Jets. There was some discussion that he wouldn’t miss any time, but he missed two weeks and there’s no guarantee he’ll be back vs. the Dolphins on Sunday. His return is good progress toward a Week 5 return though.

Mostert sprained his knee in Week 2, and Greenlaw suffered a quad contusion. Neither has practiced since before the Jets game.

It wasn’t all good news for San Francisco. Richard Sherman remains on Injured Reserve with a calf injury, although he’s eligible to come off IR. Jimmie Ward was also out with a wrist injury.

Here’s the full participation report from Wednesday:

Did not participate

DE Ezekiel Ansah (biceps)
CB Dontae Johnson (groin)
CB Emmanuel Moseley (concussion)
S Jimmie Ward (wrist)
CB K’Waun Williams (knee, hip)

Limited participation

QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle)
LB Dre Greenlaw (quadricep)
RB Raheem Mostert (knee)
WR Dante Pettis (knee)
WR Trent Taylor (ankle)
CB Ahkello Witherspoon (hamstring)

49ers injury update: K’Waun Williams, Ziggy Ansah to go on Injured Reserve

The 49ers placed two more players on Injured Reserve as their injury situation worsens.

The 49ers are sending two more players to injured reserve as their battle against the injury bug continues. They’ll send K’Waun Williams to IR with a knee injury, and fears of a torn biceps for Ezekiel Ansah were confirmed and will land him on IR as well according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Williams was dealing with a hip injury in the lead up to Week 4 against the Eagles. He wound up playing for most of the game, but exited twice. Once he limped off and returned. A second time he hurt his knee and immediately went to the locker room. Going on IR will mean the nickel corner is out for at least three weeks. Jamar Taylor replaced him last night and will likely do so moving forward.

Ansah’s biceps tear was reported by Ian Rapoport on Sunday night. Shanahan said after the game the team was concerned about a severe biceps injury, and they confirmed it Monday. That will end his season.

San Francisco has had a hard time keeping defensive ends healthy. Ansah will be the third defensive end to go on IR, joining Nick Bosa and Dee Ford. Solomon Thomas is on IR and played on the edge sometimes, and Ronald Blair has been on the Physically Unable to Perform list since the start of the year.

It’s difficult to imagine the club signs a free agent who’ll be able to play in Week 5 vs. the Dolphins. Alex Barrett is the only edge player on the practice squad. Undrafted rookie Darrion Daniels is the other defensive lineman on the 16-man unit.

Report: 49ers fear biceps tear for DE Ezekiel Ansah

The 49ers can’t catch a break on the injury front. They may have lost Ezekiel Ansah for the season per Ian Rapoport.

The 49ers can’t catch a break on the injury front, especially at defensive end. Ezekiel Ansah is believed to have suffered a biceps tear Sunday night according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport. Head coach Kyle Shanahan in his press conference confirmed a biceps injury that would land Ansah on IR.

Ansah was signed between Weeks 2 and 3 because of injuries for San Francisco at the position. Nick Bosa and Dee Ford are both out which led to the 49ers digging into the free agent pool.

He didn’t record any stats in his two games. A biceps tear could possibly end his season.

The 2013 first-round pick has dealt with injuries throughout his career. He’s played only 20 games the last three years, and since 2013 has only played in 16 games twice.

San Francisco isn’t due to get any defensive end depth back until Week 7 at the earliest when Ronald Blair is eligible to come off the Physically Unable to Perform list, so they could go searching in the free agent market again to see if they can find pass rush help.
