49ers CB K’Waun Williams questionable to return with calf injury

#49ers CB K’Waun Williams (calf) is questionable to return vs. the Packers.

It’s another rough start for the 49ers. The Packers jumped out to a 10-0 lead, and starting nickel cornerback K’Waun Williams exited the contest with a calf injury in the first quarter. He’s officially questionable to return.

Williams allowed a 43-yard completion on the Packers’ first series. Rookie Deommodore Lenoir is his likely replacement. Lenoir started the first two games outside, but Emmanuel Moseley’s return moved him to a reserve role. Lenoir was drafted to play inside and he spent some time there during camp.

49ers inactives: RB Elijah Mitchell officially ruled out vs. Packers

Elijah Mitchell is officially ruled out for the #49ers. Emmanuel Moseley, Javon Kinlaw and Arik Armstead are all in.

The San Francisco 49ers officially ruled out rookie running back Elijah Mitchell for Sunday night’s showdown with the Green Bay Packers.

Mitchell suffered a shoulder injury late against the Eagles and didn’t practice Wednesday or Thursday. He got in a limited session Friday, but was listed as ‘doubtful’ on the injury report.

Here’s who won’t suit up for the 49ers:

RB Elijah Mitchell
CB Ambry Thomas
OL Aaron Banks
CB Dre Kirkpatrick

Kirkpatrick was active last week, but won’t suit up this week with starting cornerback Emmanuel Moseley set to make his season debut. Moseley was questionable along with defensive linemen Arik Armstead and Javon Kinlaw. All three of them will play.

Defensive tackle Zach Kerr was a healthy scratch last week, but he’ll be back in the DL rotation with Kevin Givens on Injured Reserve with a high ankle sprain.

Here are the Packers’ inactives:

CB Kevin King
OL Elgton Jenkins
S Vernon Scott
LB La’Darius Hamilton

49ers Week 3 injury report: Trey Sermon cleared, Elijah Mitchell doubtful

The #49ers will have Trey Sermon on Sunday, but Elijah Mitchell’s status is doubtful. Here’s the full Week 3 injury report.

The 49ers aren’t out of the woods just yet in their Week 3 injury situation.

While they had some encouraging signs during the week, they’re on track to be without rookie running back Elijah Mitchell per the Friday injury report. One bit of good news though is that rookie running back Trey Sermon did not appear on the report after making it through concussion protocol.

Here’s the Week 3 injury report:

49ers practice report: Elijah Mitchell sits out 2nd straight day

The #49ers Thursday practice report looked a lot like Wednesday’s, which isn’t good news for a certain running back.

The 49ers’ practice participation report for Thursday was virtually unchanged from the Wednesday edition.

There was one major difference in that all three veterans who rested Wednesday were back in action Thursday. A key for San Francisco could be the status of rookie running back Elijah Mitchell, who remained out with a shoulder issue.

Here’s what Thursday’s official practice report looked like:

49ers start Week 3 with some good news on practice report

The #49ers saw a couple key players get back on the practice field to start Week 3 preparations.

The 49ers’ preparations for their Week 3 matchup with the Green Bay Packers on Sunday Night Football got off to a relatively good start considering what their injury situation could’ve looked like.

While no determinations on players’ statuses will be made until Friday, Wednesday’s practice participation report came with some good news to begin the week.

49ers place LB Dre Greenlaw on Injured Reserve

The #49ers placed LB Dre Greenlaw on Injured Reserve. There was no corresponding move for now.

The San Francisco 49ers on Saturday officially placed linebacker Dre Greenlaw on Injured Reserve. There was no immediate corresponding move to fill his roster spot.

This IR stint isn’t expected to be season-ending. Greenlaw had surgery to fix a groin injury that forced him out of the 49ers’ Week 1 win over the Lions. Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Friday said the expected recovery time is four-to-six weeks. Greenlaw will be required to stay on IR for a minimum of three weeks under the league’s new rules for players returning from the injured list.

Greenlaw in Week 1 posted six tackles and an interception that he returned for a touchdown.

In Greenlaw’s absence, Azeez Al-Shaair will get the start at Will linebacker with Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles the likely Sam linebacker.

49ers Week 2 injury report: Defensive line could get reinforcements vs. Eagles

The #49ers Week 2 injury report lists Javon Kinlaw as questionable. Here’s the rest of the status report for San Francisco’s matchup with the Eagles:

The 49ers’ Week 2 injury report wasn’t perfect, but it came with at least a couple reasons for optimism as the team prepares for their matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles.

While they’ll be without a couple defensive starters, two players along the defensive front who’ve been banged up are both in a position to potentially play Sunday.

Here’s the Week 2 injury report:

49ers practice report: Javon Kinlaw back in action before Eagles game

The #49ers had a bit of good injury news with Arik Armstead and Javon Kinlaw on Thursday.

The 49ers’ practice report had a bit of good news to offset the report that linebacker Dre Greenlaw will undergo surgery that is expected to keep him out six-to-eight weeks.

There weren’t big changes to Thursday’s participation report, but there were a couple of notable, positive differences from Wednesday.

Here’s the report:

49ers practice report: 4 defensive starters sit out first Week 2 practice

The #49ers had six defensive players out or limited on Wednesday’s practice participation report.

The 49ers are already having to manage some injuries as they head into the second game of a two-game road swing to start the year.

In Wednesday’s practice they had four defensive starters sitting out and another couple players participating in limited roles as they try to navigate a mounting injury count on that side of the football.

49ers rushing attack in line for mid-season boost

Mid-season returns for Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr. could lift the #49ers run game just in time for a playoff push.

The 49ers’ running back depth took a hit when Jeff Wilson Jr. went down in OTAs with a torn meniscus. It took another blow in Week 1 when Raheem Mostert left the game with a knee injury after only four snaps. San Francisco is down to just three running backs going into Week 2, but reinforcements are in line to come by the middle of the season.

Mostert’s knee injury will require surgery to repair some damaged cartilage. He’ll be out for at least eight weeks which would put him back in the lineup by Week 10 or so. Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday also indicated Wilson is on track for an even earlier return than that.

“Since Jeff had his injury and how’s it been going, he’s definitely on schedule to come back,” Shanahan said. “I think we were saying like between Weeks 6-8, I just haven’t asked for a while. But he’s looked great around here, working out, getting ready, and I know he’ll be helping us at some time this year.”

Wilson’s initial prognosis in June was four-to-six months. He’s on the Physically Unable to Perform list so he’ll be required to miss the first six weeks regardless of his health, so the earliest he can return is Week 7 which falls on Oct. 24 — right at the four-month mark for Wilson. A sixth-month timetable wouldn’t have put him back on the field until late December where he wouldn’t have been able to contribute as much.

Getting Wilson back for half the year or more would be a significant boost for an inexperienced 49ers backfield. Rookie Trey Sermon was inactive for the opener. Rookie Elijah Mitchell has just one game under his belt, and second-year undrafted RB JaMycal Hasty has only played in nine games.

While that is a capable trio that Shanahan expressed confidence in, Wilson looked like a budding star last season in his first expanded opportunity. He led the 49ers with 600 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns. He also had three touchdowns through the air.

Having Wilson back on fresh legs in the middle of the year, followed shortly by Mostert’s return would give the 49ers’ backfield a chance to start hitting its ceiling in time for a playoff push.
