49ers DL Javon Kinlaw could undergo surgery on knee

The #49ers didn’t have Javon Kinlaw last week, and now the second-year defensive lineman is considering knee surgery.

A balky knee has kept Javon Kinlaw from putting together the strong second season the 49ers were anticipating the 2020 first-round pick making. He was limited some in the preseason, and the team was forced to manage his ailment with a couple missed games and a slew of limited or missed practices. Now the 24-year-old is considering surgery that could end his season.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Wednesday said Kinlaw wouldn’t attend practice because he was in Los Angeles weighing his options.

“Yes. Right now, he’s down in L.A., trying to figure that out, whether he’s going to get surgery or not, and what kind of surgery. And I think we’ll get some news on that pretty soon,” Shanahan said.

Kinlaw missed the 49ers’ season opener in Detroit, saw significant action in Weeks 2-5, but red flags went up after the bye week when he was a non-participant in practice and ruled out of Sunday’s game by Friday. Shanahan didn’t seem optimistic at that point and now it appears we may not see Kinlaw on the field again in 2021.

In 18 games as a pro, Kinlaw has 41 tackles, three tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. The 49ers would certainly miss him if he misses their final 11 games, but having him healthy long-term might be worth the short-term loss.

49ers practice report: Deebo Samuel absent, Trey Lance returns

The #49ers got rookie QB Trey Lance back to open Week 8 practices, but WR Deebo Samuel was a non-participant.

The 49ers just can’t seem to get their injury situation under control. While the major injuries haven’t flooded in the way they did last year, they can’t get all of their available stars all healthy at once.

Perhaps as Week 8 progresses things will get better for San Francisco, but Wednesday’s practice report didn’t paint a great picture early in the week:

2 49ers in concussion protocol to open Week 8 preparations

The #49ers have 2 defenders in concussion protocol heading into their Week 8 matchup with the Bears.

The 49ers didn’t get out of Sunday night’s game with the Colts injury-free. Starting strong safety Jaquiski Tartt is out awhile with a knee issue, and head coach Kyle Shanahan said DL Dee Ford and LB Azeez Al-Shaair are both in concussion protocol.

Ford played only 17 snaps Sunday so it’s uncertain exactly when he went out with the injury. His role was already limited while the team tries to maximize him after a back injury robbed him of 15 games in 2020, and now he’s in jeopardy of missing his first game of the year depending on how he progresses through the protocol.

This season Ford has tallied 3.0 sacks, second-most on the team, despite playing 20 or fewer snaps in the last five contests.

Al-Shaair was putting together a nice game before his exit. He played 62 of the 68 defensive snaps, recorded nine tackles, one tackle for loss and a fumble recovery. His 44 tackles this season are second-most on the team.

If he’s unavailable in Chicago, Marcell Harris would likely be his replacement at the Will linebacker spot. The team also has Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles and veteran Tyrell Adams on the roster at linebacker if they don’t want to go with the converted safety in his first year at the position.

49ers SS Jaquiski Tartt out a few weeks with bone bruise

The #49ers won’t have starting strong safety Jaquiski Tartt for a few weeks, which opens the door for rookie Talanoa Hufanga.

The 49ers won’t have strong safety Jaquiski Tartt for awhile. Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday said Tartt has a bone bruise on his knee that is expected to keep him out for a few weeks. Rookie safety Talanoa Hufanga will step into the starting role.

Tartt left the 49ers’ Week 7 game against the Colts and was quickly ruled out. He played 40 snaps before his exit and posted three tackles. He was also flagged for pass interference.

This will be the sixth season in a row Tartt is missing multiple games. Since 2016 he’s only played in more than nine games once, and he could fall short of the double-digit mark again depending on how he recovers from his latest ailment.

Tartt’s injury opens the door for Hufanga, a rookie fifth-round selection from USC who pushed for the starting job in training camp before Tartt returned from offseason toe surgery. He posted two tackles against the Colts. Sunday in Chicago will be his first-career start.

49ers SS Jaquiski Tartt ruled out with knee injury

Jaquiski Tartt is OUT for the rest of the #49ers game vs. the Colts.

The 49ers won’t have strong safety Jaquiski Tartt to finish their game against the Colts.

Tartt was ruled out with a knee injury about halfway through the fourth quarter. He was replaced by rookie fifth-round pick Talanoa Hufanga.

Injuries have been a problem throughout Tartt’s career. He’s never played 16 games in a season and has not played more than 12 since the 2016 season.

He finished Sunday night with three tackles. He was also one of the 49ers defenders flagged for pass interference.

49ers considering injured reserve for DL Javon Kinlaw

A knee injury could wind up sidelining 49ers DL Javon Kinlaw for a few weeks.

The 49ers won’t have defensive lineman Javon Kinlaw on Sunday against the Colts, but head coach Kyle Shanahan on Friday indicated the knee injury keeping Kinlaw out Sunday could become a longer term problem.

Kinlaw has been working through a knee issue since training camp, but he only missed the season opener. He came out of the bye week though as a non-participant all week in the lead-up to Week 7, and now he could be headed to injured reserve.

“Yes, definitely,” Shanahan said about Kinlaw’s potential placement on IR. “Yeah. It’s something we’re worried about and concerned about. It’s something we’ll probably decide here in the next week.”

Despite the knee injury, Kinlaw had played at least 55 percent of the defensive snaps along with some special teams contributions in the four games he suited up for. This could be a scenario where the 49ers are aiming to get him healthier by giving him a longer absence instead of managing the knee injury week-to-week.

An IR stint would mean at least three games missed for the second-year defensive tackle. In 18 games, Kinlaw has 41 tackles, three tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and one interception.

49ers Week 7 injury report: Jimmy Garoppolo in, trenches banged up

Jimmy Garoppolo is in, and Trent Williams doubtful. Here’s the rest of the #49ers’ Week 7 injury report.

Jimmy Garoppolo did not appear on the 49ers’ Week 7 injury report, which indicates he’ll officially be the starter under center Sunday night against the Indianapolis Colts. A couple other starters did land on the injury report though, and they’ll be beat up in the trenches coming out of the bye week.

Garoppolo was a limited participant in practice Wednesday and Thursday, but he got a full session in Friday as he recovers from a calf injury that held him out of the second half of Week 4 and all of Week 5.

Here’s the rest of the injury report:

49ers LT Trent Williams day-to-day with sprained ankle

LT Trent Williams is day-to-day with an ankle sprain. #49ers

It was a little surprising when 49ers left tackle Trent Williams showed up Wednesday as a non-participant in the team’s practice report. Head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated before the session that ankle and elbow injuries would be the cause of Williams’ absence, but Thursday the team specified a sprained ankle for the left tackle. He’s day-to-day.

Williams missed two games for the 49ers last season and played in Week 5 this year despite missing part of the fourth quarter of a Week 4 loss to the Seahawks because of a shoulder issue.

His absence early in the week doesn’t necessarily rule him out for Sunday, but it certainly isn’t a great sign.

Rookie left tackle Jaylon Moore would be next in line to replace Williams. Moore played 22 snaps in Williams’ stead in Week 4 and performed well enough to hold down the swing tackle spot. He also filled in there during the preseason when Williams wasn’t playing in games.

49ers practice report: Trent Williams sits out, two starters return

The #49ers didn’t have LT Trent Williams or QB Trey Lance when they returned to practice ahead of their game vs. the Colts.

An early bye week helped, but the 49ers’ injury problem is still lingering heading into Week 7.

While a couple starters returned to action after the week off, a handful of key players sat out Wednesday’s practice as San Francisco gears up to face the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday Night Football.

One note on the 49ers’ practice report, running back JaMycal Hasty did not show up because he’s still on injured reserve even though his practice window has been opened. He won’t be required to show up on such reports until he’s officially activated off IR. There’s a chance he’s activated by the end of the week and suiting up Sunday.

Here’s Wednesday’s practice report:

Jimmy Garoppolo likely in, Trey Lance likely out vs. Colts

Kyle Shanahan expects the #49ers to have Jimmy Garoppolo under center Sunday, but doesn’t expect Trey Lance to return.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan on Wednesday confirmed something that was already relatively clear. Jimmy Garoppolo is on track to start for San Francisco in Week 7 vs. the Colts, but he won’t likely be backed up by rookie signal caller Trey Lance.

Shanahan indicated Lance is probably not going to be ready for Sunday after spraining his knee in his Week 5 start in Arizona.

“We were hoping he could go this week. It doesn’t look like it,” Shanahan said. “He might have a chance at the end of the week, but I’d be surprised if he’s not ready to go until next week.”

The sprain in Lance’s knee was going to keep him out for one or two weeks per Shanahan. Week 7 will be the second week.

A bigger deal for Lance might just be getting on the practice field even in a limited capacity by the end of the week. Any practice time is good for him even if he isn’t going to suit up Sunday. Nate Sudfeld is in line to play the backup role for the second-consecutive game.

All signs pointed to Garoppolo playing Sunday, and Shanahan confirmed as much when discussing the plan for the quarterback going into practice.

“Yeah, it will be good to go out there and go full go today,” Shanahan said. “I know he’s limited because we have to make sure he can do everything, but we’ll have a much better idea today, but I’m pretty optimistic about it.”

Garoppolo hurt his calf in Week 4 and missed the second half of that game. He didn’t practice at all in the lead up to Week 5 and after a week off for the bye appears ready to take his spot back atop the 49ers’ depth chart for Sunday Night Football vs. the Colts.
