WATCH: Talanoa Hufanga seals 49ers victory with interception

WATCH: Talanoa Hufanga seals the #49ers victory over the Chargers with an interception.

The 49ers defense needed two stops Sunday night. They got the first one when the Chargers failed to convert on a fourth-and-3. They got the next one on LA’s last-gasp attempt with less than a minute to go and the 49ers up 22-16.

Chargers QB Justin Herbert on first down got hit as he threw and had his pass float lazily to strong safety Talanoa Hufanga who hauled it in for the game-sealing INT. It was the fourth interception of the season for the second-year safety from USC.

49ers take 1st lead vs. Chargers on Christian McCaffrey TD run

WATCH: Christian McCaffrey gives the #49ers a lead vs. the Chargers.

Christian McCaffrey’s two-yard touchdown run put the 49ers ahead of the Chargers 19-16 just over halfway through the fourth quarter Sunday night. While the TD capped the drive, it was a nice catch-and-run by WR Brandon Aiyuk on the previous play that set the 49ers up with a first-and-goal at the 2. Aiyuk had a rough night to that point, but he came up big on a third-and-10 to set up a go-ahead score.

49ers LB Dre Greenlaw ejected for helmet-to-helmet hit vs. Chargers

Dre Greenlaw has been ejected from Sunday night’s game.

49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw was ejected late in the first half Sunday night for a helmet-to-helmet shot on Chargers QB Justin Herbert.

He was lowering his shoulder to hit the QB on a play where Herbert tucked and ran. 49ers defensive back Jimmie Ward hit Herbert, which knocked him forward into Greenlaw.

It did not seem like the proper use of the disqualification rule, but they want to legislate helmet-to-helmet contact out of the sport, so this is one way they’re going about it.

49ers inactives: DE Samson Ebukam officially out vs. Chargers

The #49ers officially ruled out DE Samson Ebukam on their list of inactives.

The 49ers’ list of inactives only includes a couple of players out for injury, marking a stark departure from the first half of the season when their inactive lists were littered with injured players.

DL Arik Armstead was ruled out on Friday’s injury report. DE Samson Ebukam was listed as doubtful and is now officially out after being placed among the inactives. Here’s the full list for Sunday night:

DL Arik Armstead (foot, ankle)
DE Samson Ebukam (Achilles, quad)
RB Tyrion Davis-Price
DE Kemoko Turay
LB Curtis Robinson
OL Nick Zakelj

The most notable name on the list is Davis-Price, who is entering his 10th week as a pro and still receiving healthy scratches with a healthy backfield.

Elijah Mitchell’s return alongside Christian McCaffrey meant there’d be an odd man out between Davis-Price and undrafted rookie Jordan Mason. For Sunday night it’s the third-round pick.

49ers favored big in Sunday Night Football game vs. Chargers

The #49ers are primed for a big game against the Chargers, and the point spread shows it.

The 49ers are coming off their bye week with a chance to get healthy enough to resemble the team some considered a Super Bowl contender before the season. Optimism around the club is apparent in the point spread for their showdown against the 5-3 Chargers. Tipico Sportsbook has San Francisco favored by seven points at home Sunday night.

It’s not a huge surprise the spread has ballooned from a lookahead line near a field goal up to a touchdown. The 49ers have another week to get running back Christian McCaffrey acclimated and involved in their offense. They’ll also have wide receiver Deebo Samuel back, and they could have RB Elijah Mitchell back from an MCL sprain as well. All of this comes together in time to face a Chargers club that’s one of the worst run-stopping units in the league.

This is the kind of game the 49ers could run away with if they generate a turnover or two and control the clock with a heavy dose of a run game that gets the ball into the hands of their best playmakers.

Meanwhile, the Chargers’ receiving corps is banged up and their run game hasn’t been particularly strong all year behind a beat up offensive line. A newly-healthy 49ers defense could have a big day to complement a good offensive showing.

When San Francisco plays complementary football, they’re very hard to beat, and they have a tendency to pull away and win by multiple scores.
