The 49ers’ preseason is finally over!

Friday’s 23-12 loss to the Chargers wasn’t how San Francisco likely wanted to end its exhibition slate, but they made it through without any major injuries. There were also some key things to take away from the game that will matter come the Sept. 10 season opener.

Let’s roll through those takeaways:

Studs and duds from 49ers 23-12 loss to Chargers

Studs and duds from the 49ers final preseason game:

The 49ers preseason finale didn’t result in a win for San Francisco, but it did provide a ton of insight on some of the key players on their roster.

They had some good and bad outings from players in several buckets. There were some locks to make the roster, some players on the bubble, and players unlikely to make the club who all had up-and-down outings vs. the Chargers.

Here are the studs and duds for San Francisco from Friday night at Levi’s Stadium:

Here are the main takeaways from the Bolts’ performance.

Notes and observations from 49ers preseason-ending loss to Chargers

Notes and observations from the #49ers’ preseason finale:

The 49ers’ preseason mercifully came to an end Friday night at Levi’s Stadium. They fell to the Chargers 23-12 in a game that carried a weird vibe following the pre-game trade of quarterback Trey Lance.

Here’s our notebook from throughout Friday’s game:

WATCH: 49ers WR Willie Snead hauls in TD from QB Sam Darnold

Ty Davis-Price had 4 carries for 43 yards, and Sam Darnold hit Willie Snead IV for a TD to put the #49ers up on the Chargers.

Sam Darnold and the 49ers offense opened their second half action with a touchdown. Running back Ty Davis-Price did a lot of the heavy lifting on the series with four carries for 43 yards, but Darnold capped the series with a touchdown pass to wide receiver Willie Snead IV in the back of the end zone. The throw was a touch tall, but it had good pace, was catchable and away from the cornerback. Snead’s TD grab put the 49ers up on the Chargers 12-10.

WATCH: Brock Purdy walks in for easy TD vs. Chargers

Brock Purdy walked in for an easy #49ers TD vs. the Chargers.

The 49ers made two trips to the red zone in their first two offensive series in the preseason finale. Their second one resulted in a touchdown when quarterback Brock Purdy found himself all alone on the edge. He kept his eyes up to throw, but wound up tucking the ball and running in untouched from five yards out to put the 49ers up 6-0 over the Chargers.

8 players who could play their way onto 49ers roster in preseason finale

There are a handful of #49ers whose roster spot will come down to the final preseason game:

The 49ers on Friday evening will wrap up their preseason at Levi’s Stadium against the Los Angeles Chargers.

While the quarterback news has dominated the headlines leading into the preseason finale, there are still some other things the 49ers have to figure out before finalizing its initial 53-man roster.

Setting aside the QBs for a bit, we ran through San Francisco’s offseason roster and picked out eight players who could play their way onto the 53-man with a strong outing Friday night vs. Los Angeles:

6 takeaways from 49ers’ sloppy Week 10 win over Chargers

6 takeaways from a wild #49ers Week 10 win over the Chargers:

The 49ers are 5-4 after recovering from an extremely sloppy first half to defeat an undermanned Chargers team 22-16 on Sunday Night Football.

San Francisco turned around a 16-13 fourth-quarter deficit to beat the Chargers 22-16. While not the most significant of fourth-quarter fightbacks, the Niners’ win may help quell a narrative about their ability to come from behind in the second half.

But the 49ers have plenty to fix after a mistake-strewn game in which they never truly took advantage of their obvious superiority and had to lean on their defense to close out a game that was much nervier than it should have been.

This win may not taste overly sweet, but there were positives to take from a victory that moves the 49ers half a game back of the Seahawks in the NFC West.

49ers FS Jimmie Ward doesn’t hold back after big hit on Chargers QB Justin Herbert

Jimmie Ward minced no words when talking about Dre Greenlaw’s hit on Chargers QB Justin Herbert.

A scary moment in Sunday night’s win for the 49ers over the Chargers came when 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw delivered a helmet-to-helmet hit on Chargers QB Justin Herbert. The blow got Greenlaw ejected, but it wasn’t without controversy.

While Greenlaw delivered the hit that sidelined Herbert for a couple plays, it was Ward’s hit to Herbert’s back that launched him forward into the 49ers’ linebacker.

Ward didn’t mince words when talking about the hit after the game.

“Nowadays you can’t touch a quarterback, but, I was trying to kill him,” Ward said in the locker room Sunday night via KNBR’s Sam Hustis. “I wish he would’ve stood up. There were two times I wish he wouldn’t have slid so I could let him feel me.”

The veteran safety’s disdain for quarterbacks is not exclusive to Herbert. He’s hopeful mobile QBs will think twice before taking off against the 49ers.

“Don’t run it,” Ward said. “I don’t like quarterbacks running the ball. Don’t run it. We play another running quarterback, Kyle Murray, I hope I can catch him. Don’t run it. … I don’t have sympathy for another quarterback on the opposing team. Don’t run it.”

Herbert ran the ball five times for 22 yards, but just once for two yards after the Ward/Greenlaw hit. If San Francisco can discourage mobile quarterbacks from getting loose against them, their defense will have a much easier time against some of the game’s best signal callers.
