These players have the weekend off at the 2022 3M Open

Here’s a look at some of the players in the field at the 3M Open in Blaine, Minnesota, who failed to make the weekend.

Cameron Champ looked to be toast.

The defending 3M Open champion opened with 75 and was 6 over through 26 holes. The odds weren’t in his favor to play the weekend this time. But the 27-year-old Northern California native refused to quit. He snagged a birdie at No. 18, his 27th hole of the tournament, before catching fire on the final nine holes. He closed with four birdies on his final five holes, including a 21-foot birdie putt at No. 9 to shoot 68, which secured him weekend plans in the Twin Cities.

A gutsy performance, indeed. Same goes for Rickie Fowler, who straddled the cutline most of the day and made it on the number after a bogey at No. 16, posting a 36-hole total of 1-over 143. So did Maverick McNealy, who had missed just four cuts all season. Double bogeys at Nos. 9 and 11 stacked the deck against him, but he canned a 40-foot birdie putt at 17 and an 8-foot birdie at 18 to give himself a one-strike cushion and lock up a tee time for Saturday.

Here’s a look at some of the players in the field at the 3M Open in Blaine, Minnesota, who weren’t so lucky.

Hideki Matsuyama withdraws from 3M Open after first-round 77

After the round, he withdrew from the 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities.

Hideki Matsuyama struggled on Thursday.

On the par-5 18th, his ninth hole of the day, Matsuyama carded a nine after dumping three balls in the water.

After the round, he withdrew from the 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities due to wrist soreness.

Matsuyama has been plagued with injuries in 2022. He withdrew from the Valero Texas Open after one round due to a neck injury. Before that, he withdrew from the Players Championship due to a back injury.

Now, add a wrist injury to the list.

With the FedEx Cup playoffs on the horizon, don’t be surprised if the 2021 Masters champion, who ranks eighth in the FedEx Cup standings, sits out until the FedEx St. Jude Championship, the first of three playoff events.

Photos: 2022 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities

Check out the best photos of the week from Minnesota.

After a busy week at the Home of Golf in St. Andrews for the final men’s major of the year at the British Open, the PGA Tour is back to business on the home stretch of its regular season.

TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minnesota, plays host to the 2022 3M Open this week. The Arnold Palmer design with a consultation by Tom Lehman opened in 2000 and will play to 7,441 yards with a par of 71. Previously the PGA Tour Champions’ 3M Championship ran for 26 years from 1993–2018, and it was held at TPC Twin Cities from 2001-2018.

Take a scroll through some of the best photos of the week from the 2022 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities.

Hideki Matsuyama empties sleeve of golf balls into water hazard at 2022 3M Open

Golf is difficult, even for the professionals.

Not one.

Not two.

But three balls went into the water on the par-5 18th hole at TPC Twin Cities off the clubfaces of Hideki Matsuyama, one of the best players on the planet and winner of the 2021 Masters. It came early in Thursday’s first round of the 3M Open in Blaine, Minnesota, and proves the best can still have holes like weekend warriors carrying an 18 handicap.

The star from Japan had been struggling before reaching his ninth hole of the day (he started on the 10th), especially with his driver. And then matters got worse.

Matsuyama’s first drive found the lake that runs the entire right side of the hole and up to the front of the green. He took a penalty drop and then, surprisingly, tried to hit his third shot off a deep down slope in heavy rough with a metal wood. It went 217 yards – and came up 50 yards short and in the water. He took another drop and again found the H2O.

Matsuyama finally got his eighth shot onto the green and one-putted for a 4-over 9. He made a birdie on his next hole.

Hideki Matusyama put three straight shots into the water at the 3M Open and his game has never been more relatable

Hideki went for a nice, long swim.

Hideki Matusyama is a very good golfer. He won The Masters in 2021, has eight wins on the PGA Tour total and reached as high as No. 2 in the Official World Golf Rankings back in 2017.

So it makes sense he entered a rather weak field at the 3M Open as one of the favorites (+1500 outright at Tipico) as the tour made its annual stop in Blaine, Minnesota.

It makes less sense that he picked up a quadruple bogey on the par-five 18th hole. But, wow, was it relatable. Hideki splashed three consecutive shots into the water and just looked absolutely over it as he made the turn.

Look, we’ve all been there. You hit one into the water and convince yourself, ‘Oh, I got this shot figured out now,’ only to put another in the drink. Then your ego takes over. You need to prove to everyone you have the tools to hit that shot—even at an incredibly difficult downhill slope—and it just continues to go worse and worse.

Plenty of weekend hacks would just pick up and move onto the next hole. Poor Hideki had to finish it out. His odds dropped to +12400 once he was finally able to move on.

This may have taken him out of play early this weekend, but at least he endeared himself to every wannabe pro out there.

It’s another reminder that golf is hard and cruel. Even for the best players.

Like 420-yard bombs? You’re gonna love Brandon Matthews, who is in this week’s 3M Open field

“If I wasn’t here to win a golf tournament, I need to figure out a different profession.”

Brandon Matthews may not be a name you’re aware of, but his style of play is something that draws eyeballs.

He’s known for his driver, but more importantly, he’s known for the numbers he can put up with the big stick.

For example, at The Ascendant, a Korn Ferry Tour tournament held at the beginning of July, Matthews smashed a drive that went 412 yards. His driving distance average this season on the KFT is 320 yards.

You may be thinking, so what? Cameron Champ averages 320.2 yards. Rory McIlroy averages over 319. Well, Matthews is so long he isn’t able to hit driver as much as he would like.

He was asked about that during his Tuesday press conference before the start of this week’s 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities.

“Yeah, so driver’s definitely going to be in the bag, be able to hit it a few times out here. A lot of these holes where I am going to hit driver, it sets up really nice for my eye. It’s going to be nice to hit it a few times this week for sure,” he said when asked if driver has a place in the bag this week.

“It’s going to be great, but also to that point, it’s also an advantage when I can hit 3-iron, 2-iron, 3-wood, whatever it is up to the points where some guys are hitting a driver,” he said. “Using my length to an advantage in the proper way is kind of how I look at it where I get my advantage.”

Matthews earned his 2023 PGA Tour card earlier this year, as well as a spot in the 2022 U.S. Open field where he’d eventually make it to the weekend and finish 60th.

“It was really cool. You know, teeing off afternoon on a Saturday in my first major was pretty great,” he said when asked about his experience at The Country Club. “Birdied the first hole, so I was in contention on an afternoon on a Saturday of my first major, so gave me a lot of confidence. Unfortunately, you know, things kind of didn’t go my way from there. The mental side kind of left a little bit and doing that in a U.S. Open doesn’t really help a lot coming down the stretch. But it was a great experience.”

Two of the last three winners of the 3M Open can be classified as bombers: Cameron Champ and Matthew Wolff. The year Wolff won, DeChambeau was one of the runner-ups.

“It definitely gives me confidence to see past champions here and who’s played well,” Matthews said. “Again, excited for the opportunity, looking forward to competing on this golf course, on a golf course where longer hitters are at a slight advantage.”

Over the last month and a half on the KFT, Matthews has put together a great stretch of golf finishing inside the top 15 in three of his last four starts including a T-3 at The Ascendant two weeks ago.

He withdrew from his last start after three rounds.

And, despite the tougher competition, he sounds confident in his game.

“I constantly say that if I — if I’m at a golf tournament, I’m not here to make a cut, I’m not here to, you know, slightly contend or finish high. If I wasn’t here to win a golf tournament, I need to figure out a different profession.”

Listen: Cameron Smith is the 2022 Champion Golfer of the Year. Is the LIV Golf Invitational Series in his future?

If Smith leaves, it’d be a gigantic blow to the PGA Tour.

What a week.

Rory McIlroy entered the final round with a four-stroke (with Viktor Hovland) lead, shot a bogey-free 2-under 70 and lost by two strokes.

Cameron Smith was on another planet with the putter.

His up and down on 17 will go down as one of the best in the golf’s recent history and that was only one of the spectacular shots he hit on his way to hoisting (and drinking out of) the Claret Jug.

Now rumors are swirling he way be the next big name headed to LIV.

This week on the Twilight 9 podcast, Andy Nesbitt and I quickly discuss the rumors but focus on his outstanding final-round comeback.

We also cover McIlroy’s missed chance, Tiger’s (possible) final walk across the Swilcan Bridge, Cameron Young and much more.
