Will Abdul Carter play for Penn State in the Orange Bowl vs. Notre Dame?

James Franklin did not offer much with regard to the status of Abdul Carter in the Orange Bowl.

As Penn State prepares for a College Football Playoff semifinal matchup with Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl this week, the biggest question for the Nittany Lions may be centered on the status of star edge rusher [autotag]Abdul Carter[/autotag]. Carter left Penn State’s Fiesta Bowl victory over Boise State in the quarterfinal round of the College Football Playoff with an apparent arm injury, and he did not return to the game. That has left some uncertainty over whether or not Penn State’s top defensive player will be able to take the field against the Fighting Irish with a spot in the national championship on the line.

Penn State head coach [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] is not one to dive too deeply into the health status of his players during the season unless it is of a very serious nature, so it was not expected Franklin would be willing to reveal too much information about Carter’s status for the Orange Bowl this week when meeting with the media on Saturday.

We’ll see,” Franklin said when asked if Carter will be available Thursday night in Miami for the semifinal game.

“Really, it’s going to come down to how he feels and much practice he’s able to get during the week,” Franklin added, according to Daniel Gallen of Lions247 via BlueSky. “At this point, I don’t think there’s anything that is stopping him from playing, but it’s just going to come down to how is he able to play, and we’ll see.”

Penn State would certainly be at a disadvantage if Carter is not able to play in the Orange Bowl, but the defense should still be in good shape overall. Carter is a difference-maker though and having him on the field would be a major lift for Penn State’s chances against a physical Notre Dame team.

Penn State is currently sitting as a 1.5-point favorite according to the latest betting lines, with some books giving the Nittany Lions 2.5 points. Those lines have not changed since the matchup was clinched following Notre Dame’s Sugar Bowl victory over SEC champion Georgia in the quarterfinal round.

Penn State and Notre Dame will face each other in the Orange Bowl on Thursday, January 9 at 7:30 p.m. The winner will face the winner of the Cotton Bowl matchup between Ohio State and Texas in the national championship game on Jan. 20.

Penn State will face Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl for College Football Playoff semifinal

Penn State finally found out who it will play in the Orange Bowl. Bring on the Fighting Irish!

Penn State had to wait an extra day to learn who it would play next. After dispatching of Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl on New Year’s Eve, the Nittany Lions were hoping to sit back and watch the Sugar Bowl between Georgia and Notre Dame on New Year’s Day to learn who they will face in the Orange Bowl. After the game was postponed due to the events in New Orleans early Wednesday morning, Penn State waited a little longer. And now they know who is next up on the schedule.

Penn State will play Notre Dame in the quarterfinal round of the College Football Playoff. Notre Dame beat Georgia Thursday’s postponed Sugar Bowl, 23-10, to advance to the Orange Bowl, the site of the semifinal matchup with the Nittany Lions.

Penn State already had the advantage of an extra day of rest since its last game on New Year’s Eve. Penn State will get another extra day to prepare for Notre Dame after the Irish had their Sugar Bowl matchup with Georgia delayed by a day. Penn State and Notre Dame will play in the Orange Bowl in Miami next Thursday, January 9.

The winner of next week’s Orange Bowl will advance to the College Football Playoff national championship game in Atlanta. The opponent will be determined in the Cotton Bowl between Texas and Ohio State next Friday night (Jan. 10).

Penn State and Notre Dame are tied in the all-time series with nine wins each and one tie. The last time the two teams played was in 2007 when Penn State blew out the visiting Fighting Irish, 31-10.

This will be just the second meeting in the series to occur in the postseason. The last time Penn State and Notre Dame clashed in the postseason was in the 1976 Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Florida. Notre Dame won that matchup by a score of 20-9.

Sugar Bowl postponed, Penn State will wait longer to find out next opponent

The Sugar Bowl will not be played as scheduled in the aftermath of a terror attack in New Orleans.

Penn State celebrated its Fiesta Bowl victory into the new year after taking care of Boise State, but the world woke up to devastating news in New Orleans on the first day of the new year. An act of terror in the streets of New Orleans has led to the postponement of the Sugar Bowl to Thursday, which means Penn State will wait a little bit longer to learn who it will play next.

Georgia and Notre Dame are set to meet in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, with the winner advancing to the College Football Playoff semifinal in the Orange Bowl. Penn State earned its spot in the Orange Bowl with its New Years Eve quarterfinal victory over Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl.

At least 10 people were confirmed killed and at least 30 others were injured in New Orleans when a truck crashed into a group of people on Bourbon Street early Wednesday morning as New Years celebrations were going long into the night. The armed suspect was shot and killed by police responding to the scene and the FBI is continuing its investigation into what it is classifying as an act of terror.

Given the heightened security concerns in the wake of this developing tragedy, it makes sense to push the football game back a day.

Penn State will face the winner of the Sugar Bowl next Thursday, January 9 in the Orange Bowl in Miami.

What is Penn State’s all-time record in the Orange Bowl?

Penn State is heading to the Orange Bowl for the sixth time in program history. Here is a quick look at past results.

After polishing off Boise State to win the Fiesta Bowl, Penn State is now setting its sights on the Orange Bowl as the next step on its hunt for a national championship. The Nittany Lions have a perfect record in the Fiesta Bowl and have a good winning percentage in the Orange Bowl as well. Can they keep that trend going in the next round of the College Football Playoff?

Penn State is 4-1 all-time in the Orange Bowl. The only setback cost Penn State a national championship at the end of the 1985 season when the Nittany Lions were handed their only loss of the season by No. 3 Oklahoma. The Sooners claimed the unanimous national title when No. 2 Miami lost in the Sugar Bowl. Of course, that led to Penn State’s national title run the following season, against Miami in the Fiesta Bowl.

Penn State will make its first trip to the Orange Bowl since an epic overtime clash with Florida State in the 2006 game, at the end of the 2005 season. That was highlighted as a showdown between two of college football’s all-time winningest coaches, Joe Paterno and Bobby Bowden.

This will mark Penn State’s second appearance in the Orange Bowl as a Big Ten member, and it will be the first time as a participant in the College Football Playoff semifinal round.

Here is a quick look at Penn State’s all-time results in the Orange Bowl:

  • 1969: No. 3 Penn State 15, No. 6 Kansas 14
  • 1970: No. 2 Penn State 10, No. 6 Missouri 3
  • 1974: No. 6 Penn State 16, No. 13 LSU, 9
  • 1986: No. 3 Oklahoma 25, No. 1 Penn State 10
  • 2006: No. 3 Penn State 26, No. 22 Florida State 23

Penn State will be making its sixth appearance in the Orange Bowl. whichever team Penn State faces, Georgia or Notre Dame, will also be making their sixth appearance in the bowl game. Georgia is 4-1 all-time in the Orange Bowl, and Notre Dame is 2-3 in the game. No other Big Ten team has appeared in the Orange Bowl as often as Penn State other than Nebraska, which has 17 Orange Bowl appearances.

Of course, the Big Ten has not traditionally sent teams to the Orange Bowl while the old Big Eight had a strong connection with the game (Oklahoma and Nebraska have a combined 37 appearances between them as former Big Eight members). As a Big Ten member, no other school has played in more Orange Bowl games than Michigan (four appearances representing the conference).
