As Penn State prepares for a College Football Playoff semifinal matchup with Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl this week, the biggest question for the Nittany Lions may be centered on the status of star edge rusher [autotag]Abdul Carter[/autotag]. Carter left Penn State’s Fiesta Bowl victory over Boise State in the quarterfinal round of the College Football Playoff with an apparent arm injury, and he did not return to the game. That has left some uncertainty over whether or not Penn State’s top defensive player will be able to take the field against the Fighting Irish with a spot in the national championship on the line.
Penn State head coach [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] is not one to dive too deeply into the health status of his players during the season unless it is of a very serious nature, so it was not expected Franklin would be willing to reveal too much information about Carter’s status for the Orange Bowl this week when meeting with the media on Saturday.
“We’ll see,” Franklin said when asked if Carter will be available Thursday night in Miami for the semifinal game.
“Really, it’s going to come down to how he feels and much practice he’s able to get during the week,” Franklin added, according to Daniel Gallen of Lions247 via BlueSky. “At this point, I don’t think there’s anything that is stopping him from playing, but it’s just going to come down to how is he able to play, and we’ll see.”

Penn State would certainly be at a disadvantage if Carter is not able to play in the Orange Bowl, but the defense should still be in good shape overall. Carter is a difference-maker though and having him on the field would be a major lift for Penn State’s chances against a physical Notre Dame team.
Penn State is currently sitting as a 1.5-point favorite according to the latest betting lines, with some books giving the Nittany Lions 2.5 points. Those lines have not changed since the matchup was clinched following Notre Dame’s Sugar Bowl victory over SEC champion Georgia in the quarterfinal round.
Penn State and Notre Dame will face each other in the Orange Bowl on Thursday, January 9 at 7:30 p.m. The winner will face the winner of the Cotton Bowl matchup between Ohio State and Texas in the national championship game on Jan. 20.
