Brendan Loughnane fighting for love of MMA, not money or belts: ‘I’m in the twilight of my career’

Brendan Loughnane knows he won’t be fighting for much longer, which is why he’s soaking up every bit left of his MMA career.

[autotag]Brendan Loughnane[/autotag] still feels elite, but he knows that won’t last forever.

The 2022 PFL featherweight champion is at a stage in his career when it’s not about the money or the titles, but instead enjoying what he will not be able to in the near future. Turning 35 in December, Loughnane (29-5) feels he’s getting close to the end, and that’s why he’s had a shift of mentality.

“I got a belt; it’s right there. I got the money, and I’ve invested it well,” Loughnane told MMA Junkie Radio. “I’m purely doing this for the love of martial arts and showing my skills and getting up every day and training and doing it until the wheels fall off.

“Let’s have it right: I’m 34. I’m in the twilight of my career. I’m in the last quarter of my career, and I want to enjoy every last second of it, and that’s where I’m at.”

Loughnane returns to the cage this Friday in the main event of PFL Playoffs 3, which goes down at The Anthem in Washington, D.C. He takes on Kai Kamaka (14-5-1) in the semifinal bout of the 2024 PFL featherweight playoffs.

As far as who he expects to see in the final in November, Loughnane believes he’ll end up fighting Timur Khizriev (16-0), who fights Gabriel Braga (14-1) also at this Friday’s PFL event.

“I think Timur,” Loughnane said. “I think his wrestling will be a bit too much for Braga, but I’ve been wrong before. I actually like Braga, and he’s got a great story, and he’s a great guy. Either of those two guys. Let’s just concentrate on Kai Kamaka. … I will rise to it, and I will beat him.”

Eight of the last 12 fights James Gallagher has been booked for have been canceled.

Another [autotag]James Gallagher[/autotag] fight has been canceled.

Gallagher (12-3) is out of his Aug. 23 bout vs. [autotag]Brahyan Zurcher[/autotag] (9-0) at 2024 PFL Playoffs 3. The featherweight fight was expected to be a showcase prelim at The Anthem in Washington.

MMA Junkie confirmed Gallagher’s exit from the card with a PFL official Wednesday after a post by Zurcher indicated the fight was off. Gallagher indicated in the comments of the post that a visa issue was to blame.

According to promotion officials, Zurcher will remain on the card against Brazil’s [autotag]Marcirley Alves[/autotag] (12-4).

Cobrinha BJJ’s Zurcher, 28, is one of the promotion’s most promising up-and-comers by some accounts. The 28-year-old Mexican finisher added a violent highlight to his reel in June when he smoked Julian Ruiz with a brutal knockout hook.

Chute Boxe’s Alves, 25, aims to bounce back from a loss to Sarvarjon Khamidov under the Bellator banner in June. The win came after a successful Bellator debut vs. Jerrell Hodge, whom he defeated by knockout.

PFL announces dates, locations for 2024 playoff events

Nashville, South Florida and Washington, D.C., are teed up to host PFL playoff events in August.

The second half of the 2024 PFL regular season will get underway next month, and the fighters now know where they’ll be heading if they make the postseason.

The PFL on Monday announced the dates and locations for its three playoff events in August, when the six sets of $1 million finalists will be determined.

The first playoff event, which will feature the top four women’s flyweights and heavyweights, will take place Aug. 2 at Nashville Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn. It will be the promotion’s first trip to the city.

Two weeks later, the postseason continues with light heavyweights and lightweights in action at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla., on Aug. 16. The PFL is familiar with that venue. It held its 2021 playoff events there for three consecutive weeks.

And welterweights and featherweights will wrap up the playoffs Aug. 23 at The Anthem in Washington, D.C., another venue the PFL is familiar with. The 2023 $1 million finals took place there this past November.

The playoff fields have yet to be determined. The first half of the regular season wrapped up a few weeks ago, and the second half fights take place in June to determine the top four point-getters in each division.

“PFL playoff action is second to none, with the best athletes in the sport vying for a chance to continue their million-dollar championship journeys,” PFL CEO Peter Murray said in a news release. “The PFL is excited to bring the 2024 PFL Global Season Playoffs to Nashville, Miami and D.C., as well as our fans from 160 countries around the globe. The PFL Global Season Playoffs win-and-advance format is the epitome of meritocracy.”

The second half of the PFL’s regular season starts June 13 in Uncasville, Conn., followed by June 21 in Salt Lake City and June 28 in Sioux Falls, S.D.
