Chelsea Hackett explains why 2024 PFL 4 is ‘the best time’ to face Dakota Ditcheva

Dakota Ditcheva is one of PFL’s hottest up-and-comers, but Chelsea Hackett embraces the opportunity to fight her.

[autotag]Chelsea Hackett[/autotag] might be a heavy underdog according to the oddsmakers, but she’s feeling like there’s no better time to face opponent [autotag]Dakota Ditcheva[/autotag].

The time is Thursday, at 2024 PFL 4, which takes place at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. Hackett (4-2-1) vs. Ditcheva (11-0) serves as the co-main event.

“If there was a camera on me, I was jumping up and down,” Hackett recently told MMA Junkie Radio. “I was so excited. I have said I wanted to fight Dakota for almost a year now. That’s not me being egotistic. This is me being a competitor. Competitor vs. competitor. All due respect to Dakota and all of that, but I’ve wanted to fight her because I truly believe I have the tools to beat her. Obviously, when I found out I’ve got her, especially coming off a loss, I wasn’t really sure if I’d get the opportunity. But as soon as I found out, I was over the moon.”

The history between Hackett and Ditcheva extends back a decade – though it’s pleasant and respectful. The two fighters competed at the International Federation of Muaythai Associations (IFMA) World Games approximately a decade ago. Hackett remembers watching Ditcheva, who competed a weight class below her.

“She was in the 52kg, I’m pretty sure. I was in the 57kg,” Hackett said. “I remember seeing her at the IFMA Games back then a bit. It would’ve been like 10 years ago now. … I went two years: 2014 to 2015. I’m pretty sure Dakota went both of those years, as well. But Valentina, in 2015, did the same thing. So I saw Dakota and I saw Valentina 10 years ago at the IFMA World Games, so it’s pretty crazy to see where all of our lives have ended up. It’s like we’re now coming together.”

The similarities stick out to Hackett, but so do the differences. The most glaring difference is their position in the 2024 women’s flyweight standings. Ditcheva sits in first place with six points at 1-0. Hackett is in seventh place with no points and an 0-1 record.

Despite the stakes, Hackett views the bout as individual. The circumstances are blocked out.

“The reason why I really wanted this fight, especially in the position I’m in now, is obviously because I have nothing to lose,” Hackett said. “For me, the points are one thing. Let’s take that away with the season format for a second. Me beating Dakota, whatever way it may be – stoppage, decision, whatever round it’s in – that’s a huge win for me. That is also why I wanted this fight. It’s the best time in my career to fight someone like Dakota. Coming off the back of a loss, I’m as hungry as ever. As much as the points are obviously important to stay in the whole tournament, this fight for me, I’m looking at it as a single fight because that’s how big it is.”

2024 PFL 4 loses fight days out from event

PFL will make its Mohegan Sun debut Thursday and hot prospect Melissa Balic will not be a part of the action.

It’s fight week for PFL, though the card is one fight less than expected.

Spotlighted amateur prospect [autotag]Melissa Balic[/autotag] is out of 2024 PFL 4 due to injury. Two people, including a promotion official, recently informed MMA Junkie of the situation.

Balic (0-0) was expected to fight [autotag]Kristina Katsikis[/autotag] (1-2) in a flyweight showcase bout on the preliminary card Thursday at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The fight has been scrapped.

Balic, 26, has a 3-1 amateur record with a handful of amateur kickboxing bouts prior. Balic is a New York native and member of Tiger Schulmann’s Martial Arts, a gym that encourages fighters to begin with kickboxing bouts. Balic was heavily influenced by Lyman Good, Shane Burgos and Julio Arce, among others.

Nicknamed “Statick,” Balic currently holds the Flex Fight Series amateur women’s flyweight title. Of her three amateur wins, two came by unanimous decision and the third by submission.

Continuation of PFL’s heavyweight season gets two changes in Connecticut

The PFL’s return next month, and debut at Bellator’s former East Coast home base, has seen a pair of changes at heavyweight.

The PFL’s return next month, and debut at Bellator’s former East Coast home base, has seen a pair of changes at heavyweight.

[autotag]Daniel James[/autotag] (15-7-1) is out of his fight against [autotag]Tyrell Fortune[/autotag] (13-2) on the main card. Fortune now will take on [autotag]Marcelo Golm[/autotag] (10-5). And [autotag]Marcelo Nunes[/autotag] (11-2) is out of his bout against [autotag]Oleg Popov[/autotag] (17-1). Popov now will take on replacement [autotag]Davion Franklin[/autotag] (6-2).

A Bellator official informed MMA Junkie of the new matchups Monday. The start of the PFL’s second half of the regular season takes place June 13 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. (ESPN/ESPN+), and features heavyweights and women’s flyweights who will attempt to qualify for the four-person postseason.

Fortune was supposed to fight Golm this past November at UFC 301 in Chicago, but Fortune became sick on fight day after the event started and the bout was scrapped. Fortune also was supposed to fight James to open the regular season, but had to withdraw. Consequently, he has no points in the standings, which are led by Valentin Moldavsky with 6 points. Golm lost his opening bout of the regular season.

Popov has 5 points after a second-round stoppage in his first fight of the season. Franklin will be fighting for the first time in the regular season.

With the changes, the PFL Week 4 lineup now includes:

MAIN CARD (ESPN, 9 p.m. ET)

  • Valentin Moldavsky vs. Linton Vassell

Valentin Moldavsky vs. Linton Vassell headlines 2024 PFL 4 at Mohegan Sun

The second half of the PFL’s 2024 season starts in mid-June with heavyweights and women’s flyweights on the card in Connecticut.

The second half of the PFL’s 2024 season starts in mid-June with heavyweights and women’s flyweights on the card in Connecticut.

For the first time, the promotion will touch town at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. That venue was the East Coast home for Bellator for years before the PFL purchased it this past fall. PFL 2024, Week 4 is set for June 13.

Former Bellator standouts [autotag]Valentin Moldavsky[/autotag] (13-3) and [autotag]Linton Vassell[/autotag] (24-9) will meet in the heavyweight main event, the promotion announced Monday. Moldavsky is at the top of the standings after a first-round knockout of Ante Delija earlier this month. Vassell was stopped by Denis Goltsov in the third round.

Because only four fighters make the playoffs and the top four at heavyweight all have 4 pints or more, Vassell will need a finish of Moldavsky if he wants a shot at making the postseason.

In the co-main event, [autotag]Dakota Ditcheva[/autotag] (11-0) takes on [autotag]Chelsea Hackett[/autotag] (4-2-1). Ditcheva is one of three fighters with 6 points atop the women’s 125-pound standings after her first-round knockout of Lisa Mauldin in San Antonio. Hackett was submitted by Jena Bishop, so like Vassell finds herself in position to need a stoppage to have a realistic shot at the postseason.

Although there will be four other matchups in each of those divisions, those two matchups are the only ones the promotion announced Monday. The other fights are expected to be announced in the coming days.

After PFL 4 in Connecticut, the promotion heads to Salt Lake City for light heavyweights and lightweights June 21, then Sioux Falls, S.D., for welterweights and featherweights June 28.

“The PFL’s season format is the toughest test in MMA with the addition of elite athletes from Bellator, returning to Mohegan Sun, and PFL Europe looking to clinch a position in the 2024 PFL Playoffs,” PFL CEO Peter Murray said in a news release. “The PFL is excited to bring our brand of MMA to Connecticut, as well as our fans from 160 countries around the globe.”

PFL heads to Mohegan Sun, Salt Lake City, Sioux Falls for second half of 2024 regular season

The PFL will continue its 2024 season in June with events in three new locations.

The PFL will continue its 2024 season in June with events in three new locations.

The promotion wraps up the first half of the regular season Friday in Chicago. But after a two-month break, the fighters in six divisions will be back looking to lock in postseason positions.

2024 PFL 4 will take place June 13, a Thursday, at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. That location was a regular stop for Bellator before that promotion was bought by the PFL, but the PFL will be hosting an event there for the first time.

Heavyweights and women’s flyweights will be in action at that event. At heavyweight, Valentin Moldavsky leads the standings with 6 points as the only first-round finisher two weeks ago in San Antonio. And there’s a three-way 6-point tie atop the women’s 125-pound division with Dakota Ditcheva, Taila Santos and Jena Bishop.

The regular season then continues on consecutive Fridays with light heavyweights and lightweights at Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City on June 21 and welterweights and featherweights at Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D., on June 28.

At light heavyweight, all five regular season fights a week ago were first-round finishes, resulting in an unprecedented five-way tie atop the division heading into the second set of fights. Defending champ Impa Kasanganay, Antonio Carlos Jr., Rob Wilkinson, Josh Silveira and Dovletdzhan Yagshimuradov all have 6 points. At lightweight, Clay Collard, Brent Primus and Michael Dufort are tied with 5 points.

As has been customary since its launch in 2018, regular season fighters will complete for a $1 million grand prize to each division’s champion, which will be determined by two regular season bouts and playoffs.

No specific matchups have been announced for the second-half events. All three cards will be available on ESPN, ESPN+ and ESPN Deportes.

PFL heads to Mohegan Sun for first time with June fight card

PFL will hit a familiar Bellator stomping ground this June as it debuts at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

PFL will grace New England for the first time since it’s season format was installed with an event at a familiar Bellator stomping ground.

2024 PFL 4 will take place June 13 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., a person with knowledge of the event recently informed MMA Junkie.

The event is expected to feature heavyweight and women’s flyweight regular season matchups, as well as a handful of showcase bouts.

No matchups are known yet for the event. The two featured weight classes will compete Thursday in their opening regular season bouts at 2024 PFL 1.
