Nebraska Football Countdown to Kickoff: No. 1 Jimari Butler

The countdown until kickoff is down to just one day.

Only 24 hours remain until Nebraska’s 2024 season kicks off when the Cornhuskers take on the University of Texas El Paso Miners at Memorial Stadium. 

With just one day to go, Huskers defensive lineman Jimari Butler is in the player spotlight.

Butler played in 11 of 12 games for the Huskers a season ago, including six starts. He recorded 34 tackles in those 11 games, including 17 solo tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, and 5.5 sacks. He also had one forced fumble and two pass deflections.

Butler will be one of two defensive ends for the Huskers this season, starting opposite Ty Robinson. Together, the two defensive ends should give the Gophers a stout duo of edge rushers, which will have some high expectations surrounding them heading into Saturday’s season opener.

Nebraska Football Countdown to Kickoff: No. 2 DB Isaac Gifford

The countdown until August 31 is down to two days.

The countdown until kickoff for the Nebraska Cornhuskers is down to just two days and with under 48 hours until kickoff, Huskers senior defensive back Isaac Gifford is in the spotlight.

The Lincoln native is in his fifth season with the program and has 44 career games played including 22 starts. Over the last two seasons, Gifford has been one of the Huskers top defenders with back-to-back seasons of 70+ tackles and five or more tackles for loss.

His 2023 season was the best of his career with 12 starts while totaling 86 total tackles including 44 solo tackles. He also had 6.5 tackles for loss and half a sack. He also recorded nine pass deflections and one interception. In nine of 12 games, he recorded seven or more tackles including a pair of games that included a pair of games in which he recorded double-digit tackles including 11 tackles against Iowa.

This fall, Gifford will return as the Huskers starter at the ROVER position and will be expected to be one of the Blackshirts leaders on defense.

Nebraska Football Countdown to Kickoff: No. 3 Marques Buford Jr.

The countdown until August 31 is down to three days.

The countdown until the beginning of the 2024 season for the Nebraska Cornhuskers is down to less than 72 hours.

With three days remaining until the Huskers take the field at Memorial Stdium, Huskers junior defensive back Marques Buford Jr is in the player spotlight.

Buford Jr. is entering his fourth season with the program and enters the season with 27 games played including 13 starts. Last season, Buford was kept to just four games played, missing eight games due to injury.

In 2022, the 5-foot-11, 190-pound defensive back played in 11 of 12 games, recording 59 tackles including 36 solo tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss. He also had two interceptions and five pass deflections.

Now healthy, Buford will be a starter for the Huskers again this fall, starting opposite of Tommi Hill.

Nebraska Football Countdown to Kickoff: No. 4 Jahmal Banks

The countdown until August 31 is down to four days.

Four days. Just four days remain until the beginning of the 2024 Nebraska Cornhuskers season. Matt Rhule and his Huskers are in the midst of their gameweek preparations for the UTEP Miners and here on Cornhuskers Wire, we continue to countdown the days until toe meets leather. 

With four days remaining until kickoff, Nebraska wide receiver Jahmal Banks is in the player spotlight. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound wide receiver is in his first year with the program after making the move to Lincoln after spending the first part of his collegiate career with Wake Forest.

Banks is coming off back-to-back seasons with Wake Forest of 600+ receiving yards. In 2023, Banks recorded 59 receptions for 653 yards and four touchdowns. He also had 42 receptions for 636 yards and nine touchdowns in 2022.

Banks this fall will be one of the Huskers starting wide receivers alongside fellow tranfer Isaiah Neyor and Janiran Bonner. The Washington, D.C. native will be expected to be one, if not the Huskers top wide receiver this fall.

Nebraska Football Countdown to Kickoff: No. 5 LB John Bullock

The countdown until August 31 is down to five days.

The 2024 college football season for the Nebraska Cornhuskers is into the home stretch. Just five days remain until toe meets leather at Memorial Stadium on Saturday morning and the Nebraska Cornhuskers kickoff their 2024 season against the University of Texas El Paso Miners.

With five days to go, Huskers senior linebacker John Bullock is in today’s player spotlight.

Bullock enters the 2024 season with 34 career games played including 10 starts. All 10 of those starts came last season as he appeared in all 12 games for the Huskers, recording 50 tackles including 27 total tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. He also had two pass deflections and one forced fumble on the season.

This fall, Bullock will be the Huskers starting WILL linebacker, starting alongside Mikai Gbayor and Princewill Umanmielen.

Nebraska Football Countdown to Kickoff: No. 6 DB Tommi Hill

The countdown until August 31 is down to six days.

It’s officially less than a week until football returns to Memorial Stadium as the Nebraska Cornhuskers continue to prepare for their 2024 season opener against the University of Texas – El Paso Miners on August 31.

The countdown to kickoff continues on her at Cornhuskers Wire and in today’s spotlight is Huskers senior defensive back Tommi Hill.

The Orlando, Florida native is entering his third season with the Huskers after appearing in 23 games over the psat two seasons which included making 13 starts. In his 23 games for the Huskers, Hill has recorded 43 total tackles including 27 solo tackles. He also has 17 career pass deflections, 13 of which came last esason and four interceptions.

Despite the terrific performance a year ago, he was only named an All-Big Ten honorable-mention by both the coaches and media.

Hill will be one of the Huskers starting cornerbacks this year alongside Marques Buford Jr and is expected to be one of the top cornerbacks in the country this season. Recently, an early 2025 mock draft on ESPN had Hill as a late first-round pick.

Nebraska Football Countdown to Kickoff: No. 7 Malcolm Hartzog Jr.

The countdown until August 31 is down to seven days.

The start of the 2024 season for the Nebraska Cornhuskers is officially just a week away. With seven days remaining Huskers junior defensive back Malcom Hartzog Jr is today’s featured Husker.

The Silver Creek, Mississippi native is entering his third season with the program and has been a regular for the Huskers through his first two seasons, playing in all 24 games including making 18 starts.

The versatile defensive back can play both cornerback and safety, starting seven games at corner and three at safety a year ago. In those 12 games and 10 starts in 2023, Hartzog Jr set a career high for tackles with 40 and also had 1.5 tackles for loss and six pass breakups. In his 24 career games played, he has 62 career tackles including 38 solo tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss.

This fall, Hartzog is expected to be the Huskers starting safety, starting alongside strong safety DeShon Singleton.

Hartzog and the Huskerswill kickoff their season next Saturday, August 31 at 11:00 a.m. central time against the University of Texas – El Paso Miners.

Nebraska Football Countdown to Kickoff: No. 8 DeShon Singleton

The countdown until August 31 is down to eight days.

The long wait until college football begins is almost over.  Only eight days remain until the Nebraska Cornhuskers begin their 2024 season against the UTEP Miners next Saturday.

In the player spotlight with eight days remaining until Memorial Stadium is full once again is Huskers senior defensive back DeShon Singleton.

The Greensburg, Louisiana native is entering his third year with the program.

In his first year with the program in 2022, Singleton played in all 12 games, mostly on special teams, but did see time in parts of six games on defense. Last fall, Singleton started for the Huskers at safety for the first month of the season but suffered an injury against Michigan that would end his year.

This fall, he’ll have the opportunity to start again for the Huskers at strong safety and, this time, keep that starting job.

Prior to arriving in Lincoln, Singleton was a standout at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas, one of the top JUCO programs in the country.

Freshman Jacory Barney Jr. named to Jet Award Preseason Watch List

Wide receiver Jacory Barney Jr. was named to the Jet Award Preseason Watch List.

A true freshman earned himself a spot on a preseason watch list. Nebraska football announced that wide receiver Jacory Barney Jr. was named to the Jet Award Preseason Watch List.

Named after Husker alum Johnny Rodgers, the Jet Award is given to the top return specialist in college football. Jacory Barney Jr. joins Nebraska after being a two-way player at Miami Palmetto High School. He primarily played on offense at quarterback, running back, and wide receiver.

The Florida City, Florida native caught 15 passes for 135 yards and one touchdown, passed for 189 yards and three touchdowns, and rushed for 100 yards rushing and a touchdown in his final season.

In his junior season, Barney Jr. hauled in 37 receptions for 559 yards and four touchdowns, threw for 217 yards and four touchdowns, and ran for 184 yards and one touchdown. He helped Palmetto to the state regional finals as a sophomore and the regional semifinals as a junior.

The winner of the Jet Award will be announced at the Jet Award Gala on April 10, 2025.

Nebraska Football Countdown to Kickoff: No. 9 Ty Robinson

The countdown until August 31 is down to nine days.

The countdown to kickoff for the Nebraska Cornhuskers is officially into the single digits as the countdown is down to just nine days until August 31 and the Huskers season opener against the UTEP Miners.

In the spotlight with nine days remaining is Huskers senior defensive lineman Ty Robinson. The Gilbert, Arizona native is entering his sixth season with the program.

He enters this fall with 47 career games played including 34 starts. In those 47 career games, Robinson has recorded 93 career tackles including 14 tackles for loss, five sacks, and eight pass deflections.

This fall, Robinson will be the Huskers starting defensive tackle alongside nose tackle Nash Hutmacher.The sixth-year senior will be expected to be a key leader for the Huskers Blackshirts this fall as Matt Rhule’s program looks to make a bowl game for the first time since 2016.
